Compound Relators and Linkers

Filipino relational phrases can contain several layers: an outer relator, an internal modifier, a relational noun, and a marker introducing the reference point. Sa mismong harap ng estasyon “directly in front of the station” contains both attached linker -ng and separate marker ng, but they do different jobs.

English speakers often treat the whole phrase as one indivisible preposition. Seeing its internal structure makes long forms predictable and prevents errors such as sa mismo harap na estasyon.

The building blocks

LayerExamplesFunction
outer relationsa, nasa, mula sa, hanggang sa, papunta salocation, predicate, source, endpoint, direction
internal modifiermismong, bandang, dulongprecision, approximation, subregion
relational nounharap, tapat, gitna, dulo, loob, ilalim, kabilanames the relevant region
reference-point markerng, ni, nina or pronounidentifies the landmark
complete phrasesa mismong gitna ng plaza“in the very middle of the plaza”

Not every phrase contains every layer. Sa harap ng bahay has no internal modifier. Sa labas omits a recoverable landmark. The order, however, remains interpretable from the same template.

Linkers inside a compound relation

An internal modifier must link to the relational noun according to its final sound. Vowel-final mismo and banda take attached -ng, producing mismong and bandang; an n-final modifier takes attached -g; and a modifier ending in any other consonant takes separate na.

Magkita tayo sa mismong tapat ng estasyon bago mag-alas-otso.

Let's meet directly opposite the station before eight o'clock.

Inilipat nila ang mga upuan sa bandang dulo ng pasilyo.

They moved the chairs toward the far end of the corridor.

In mismong tapat and bandang dulo, attached -ng is a linker. The separate ng in tapat ng estasyon and dulo ng pasilyo introduces the reference point. The linker allomorphy page explains the spelling choice.

The modifier changes precision. Sa tapat ng estasyon gives the relation; sa mismong tapat ng estasyon emphasizes exact alignment. Sa dulo ng pasilyo names the end; sa bandang dulo means in the general end area rather than at one exact point.

💡
Read outward in layers: sa [mismong [harap [ng gusali]]]. The linker attaches the modifier to harap; ng attaches gusali as harap's landmark.

Stacking source, direction, and endpoint

A source or path expression can take an entire spatial phrase as its complement:

Tumutulo ang tubig mula sa ilalim ng lababo.

Water is dripping from beneath the sink.

Umabot ang pila hanggang sa harap ng lumang teatro kaninang umaga.

The line reached as far as the front of the old theater this morning.

Dumiretso kami papunta sa kabila ng tulay.

We continued straight toward the other side of the bridge.

Mula sa, hanggang sa, and papunta sa take larger relational phrases. Do not delete the inner sa merely because English uses one preposition (from under, to, toward). Filipino marks each relational layer overtly.

The meanings of the outer elements remain distinct. Mula sa ilalim ng tulay is a source, hanggang sa ilalim ng tulay is an endpoint, and papunta sa ilalim ng tulay is a direction. The relational core ilalim ng tulay stays constant.

sa may and approximate regions

Conversational Filipino frequently uses sa may + place/relation for an approximate area: “around/by the area of.”

May tahimik na kainan sa may likod ng lumang kapilya.

There is a quiet eatery around the back of the old chapel. (informal conversation)

This may belongs inside the locative expression sa may; it is not the existential may introducing likod. The opening existential in the sentence is the first May, which introduces tahimik na kainan. Because the two forms are homographs, structure matters.

In careful directions, sa bandang likod ng kapilya is another standard way to indicate an approximate rear area. Neither expression should be expanded into sa mayroon.

Different relational words select different complements

The pattern with a relational noun commonly uses ng, but not every relational expression does. Adjectival or lexical predicates such as malapit and malayo select sa.

Malapit sa terminal ang bagong tanggapan, pero nasa likod ng malaking hotel ito.

The new office is near the terminal, but it is behind the large hotel.

Malapit sa terminal and likod ng malaking hotel must be learned with their own complement patterns. English near and behind do not reveal the Filipino marker.

Some conventional multiword relators likewise have fixed structures: tungkol sa “about,” ayon sa “according to,” dahil sa “because of,” and sa pamamagitan ng “by means of.” They are productive phrases with internal histories, but learners should not recombine their markers freely.

💡
Memorize the complement with the relational word: harap ng, malapit sa, tungkol sa. Similar English translations do not guarantee the same Filipino marker.

Coordination and shared material

Related regions can share a reference point when the result is clear:

Naglagay sila ng ilaw sa loob at labas ng bulwagan.

They installed lights inside and outside the hall.

Here ng bulwagan is understood with both loob and labas. Repeating it—sa loob ng bulwagan at sa labas ng bulwagan—is also grammatical and may be clearer when the phrases are long or contrastive.

—Nasaan ang mesa para sa pagpapatala? —Sa gawing kanan ng entablado, katabi ng mesa ng mga tagapag-ayos.

—Where is the registration table? —Toward the right side of the stage, next to the organizers' table.

The exchange combines gawing kanan, a reference point with ng, and compact predicate katabi ng. Natural directions routinely layer these devices rather than matching English prepositions word for word.

Common Mistakes

Omitting the linker after mismo

❌ Maghintay ka sa mismo gitna ng bulwagan.

Incorrect — vowel-final mismo takes attached linker -ng before gitna.

✅ Maghintay ka sa mismong gitna ng bulwagan.

Wait in the exact middle of the hall.

Using linker na where the landmark marker is required

❌ Nasa harap na gusali ang ambulansiya.

Incorrect for ‘in front of the building’ — na would link harap as a modifier rather than introduce its landmark.

✅ Nasa harap ng gusali ang ambulansiya.

The ambulance is in front of the building.

Dropping sa from a stacked source phrase

❌ Lumabas ang usok mula ilalim ng pinto.

Incorrect in neutral standard Filipino — mula takes the sa phrase that follows.

✅ Lumabas ang usok mula sa ilalim ng pinto.

Smoke came out from under the door.

Assuming every relation takes ng

❌ Malapit ng palengke ang paradahan ng dyip.

Incorrect — malapit selects a sa complement.

✅ Malapit sa palengke ang paradahan ng dyip.

The jeepney stop is near the market.

Key Takeaways

  • Compound relators may contain an outer relation, linked modifier, relational noun, and reference-point marker.
  • Attached linker -ng in mismong harap is different from separate marker ng in harap ng gusali.
  • Source, direction, and endpoint expressions can contain a full sa + relational noun + complement phrase.
  • Sa may and bandang commonly mark approximate regions; label conversational uses honestly.
  • Complement choice is lexical: relational nouns often take ng, while malapit/malayo take sa.
