Hanggang marks an endpoint: in time “until,” in space “as far as,” in quantity “up to,” or in discourse “up to this point.” It often combines with sa, but the form of the complement and the style of the phrase determine whether sa appears.
English until, by, through, and as far as divide the domain differently. A deadline by Friday is not always the same as an activity continuing until Friday, so the predicate and aspect must be interpreted with the relator.
Like other relational phrases, hanggang combines with the general patterns described under sa as general relator, but it adds an explicit boundary meaning.

The open state continues to the stated endpoint. Exact inclusion of the final instant depends on real-world convention; schedules normally treat closing time as the boundary at which access ends.
Mananatili kami rito hanggang Biyernes.
We will stay here until Friday.
With a telic predicate, contemporary Filipino can use hanggang for a deadline: Ipasa mo ang ulat hanggang Biyernes is commonly understood as “Submit the report by Friday.” For maximum precision, especially in legal or logistical instructions, use sa o bago or an explicit final boundary:
Kailangang makarating sa tanggapan ang ulat bago matapos ang Biyernes.
The report must reach the office by the end of Friday.
This wording states the deadline explicitly and avoids uncertainty about whether some or all of Friday is included.
Whether a named day is included depends on the activity and institutional convention. Mananatili hanggang Biyernes often includes some or all of Friday, while a closing notice may treat Friday's stated hour as the exact cutoff. When legal or logistical precision matters, state the hour or use sa o bago “on or before.”
Spatial endpoints
Sumakay kami ng dyip hanggang sa palengke.
We rode a jeep as far as the market.
Naglakad siya hanggang kanto bago sumakay ng traysikel.
She walked as far as the corner before taking a tricycle.
Both hanggang sa palengke and shorter hanggang kanto are natural. Bare forms are especially common with familiar destinations and fixed expressions (conversational); hanggang sa is explicit and neutral.
Hanggang dito na lang ang pila; puno na ang bulwagan.
The line ends here; the hall is already full.
Na lang presents this point as the imposed limit.
Event endpoints
Maghintay tayo hanggang matapos ang pulong.
Let's wait until the meeting ends.
The basic/infinitive form matapos is licensed by the prospective endpoint environment; it does not assert completed aspect or say that the meeting has already ended.
Huwag mong patayin ang ilaw hanggang sa makalabas ang lahat.
Do not turn off the light until everyone has left.
The prohibition continues until the exit event. Hanggang sa before a clause is common, but shorter hanggang makalabas is also standard. Rhythm and register influence the choice more than a strict meaning contrast.
Ranges and quantities
Tumatanggap ang klinika ng pasyente mula alas-otso hanggang alas-kuwatro.
The clinic receives patients from eight until four.
Hanggang sampung kalahok ang kasya sa maliit na silid.
Up to ten participants fit in the small room.
The quantity is a maximum, not a claim that exactly ten will attend.
Hanggang versus hangga't
Hangga't is an established contraction used for “as long as/while” and sometimes a condition-like temporal limit. It introduces a clause and is not merely optional punctuation for hanggang.
Mananatiling bukas ang klinika hangga't may pasyenteng naghihintay.
The clinic will remain open as long as a patient is waiting.
Use ordinary uncontracted hanggang for a noun or endpoint: hanggang gabi, hanggang sa tulay.

Hanggang kailan kayo mananatili sa lungsod?
Until when will you stay in the city?
—Hanggang saan ang sakop ng libreng sakay? —Hanggang sa istasyon sa hilaga.
—How far does the free ride coverage extend? —As far as the station in the north.
The question word stays inside the relational phrase hanggang saan/kailan.
