Present Indicative for Current Events

The Persian present indicative can describe an action in progress at the speech moment: الان گزارش را می‌نویسم “I'm writing the report now.” Unlike English, Persian does not require a separate equivalent of be + -ing every time an event is current. An activity verb plus context may already supply the ongoing reading.

Persian also has an explicit progressive with داشتن: دارم گزارش را می‌نویسم “I am in the middle of writing the report.” This construction foregrounds the action as visibly or relevantly underway. Choosing between the simple present and explicit progressive is therefore partly a choice about how strongly to present the event as ongoing.

Context can make the ordinary present ongoing

Words such as الان “now,” همین حالا “right now,” فعلاً “for now,” and a question about the immediate situation guide می‌ + present stem toward a current-event reading.

فردا گزارش می‌نویسمI will write a report tomorrowfuture-time adverb

الان شام درست می‌کنم؛ ده دقیقه‌ی دیگر آماده است.

alân shâm dorost mi-konam; dah daqiqe-ye digar âmâde ast.

I'm making dinner now; it'll be ready in ten minutes. (careful spoken standard; contextual ongoing reading)

صدایت را خوب نمی‌شنوم؛ از تونل رد می‌شویم.

sedâ-yat râ khub nemi-shenavam; az tunel rad mi-shavim.

I can't hear you well; we're passing through a tunnel. (careful spoken standard; immediate situation)

بیرون باران می‌بارد و خیابان‌ها خیس شده‌اند.

birun bârân mi-bârad-o khiyâbân-hâ khis shode-and.

It's raining outside, and the streets have become wet. (neutral standard; observable current event)

The activity predicates درست کردن، رد شدن، باریدن naturally unfold through time. With a clear “now” context, the ordinary present can locate the listener inside that unfolding activity.

💡
English tense morphology cannot be copied word for word. Before adding دارم, first ask whether the Persian present plus الان or the surrounding situation already makes the ongoing reading clear.

The explicit progressive with داشتن

The present progressive combines an inflected present form of داشتن with a present indicative main verb:

دارم/داری/دارد/داریم/دارید/دارند + ... + می‌ + present stem + matching ending

PersonAuxiliaryMain verbComplete form
Iدارممی‌خوانمدارم کتاب می‌خوانم
you (singular)داریمی‌خوانیداری کتاب می‌خوانی
he/sheداردمی‌خوانددارد کتاب می‌خواند
weداریممی‌خوانیمداریم کتاب می‌خوانیم
you (plural/polite)داریدمی‌خوانیددارید کتاب می‌خوانید
theyدارندمی‌خواننددارند کتاب می‌خوانند

Both finite verbs agree with the same subject. دارم ... می‌خوانم is first singular at both ends; دارند ... می‌خوانند is third plural at both ends.

دارم فرم ثبت‌نام را پر می‌کنم؛ یک دقیقه صبر کنید.

dâram form-e sabt-nâm râ por mi-konam; yek daqiqe sabr konid.

I'm filling in the registration form; please wait a minute. (careful spoken standard; explicit progressive)

بچه‌ها دارند در حیاط برف‌بازی می‌کنند.

bachche-hâ dârand dar hayât barf-bâzi mi-konand.

The children are playing in the snow in the yard. (neutral spoken Persian; explicit progressive)

هوا دارد کم‌کم تاریک می‌شود.

havâ dârad kam-kam târik mi-shavad.

It's gradually getting dark. (neutral spoken Persian; change visibly underway)

In the last sentence, both دارد and می‌شود show third-singular agreement with هوا. The auxiliary does not replace the main verb or absorb its ending.

The full paradigm and its register are developed on Present Progressive with داشتن.

When the explicit progressive is preferred

Use دارم می‌... when you need to correct a habitual interpretation, emphasize interruption, answer “what are you doing right now?”, or show a change unfolding before the observer.

مزاحم نشو؛ دارم با پزشک صحبت می‌کنم.

mozâhem nashow; dâram bâ pezeshk sohbat mi-konam.

Don't interrupt; I'm talking to the doctor. (neutral conversation; interrupted activity)

نگاه کن، اتوبوس دارد می‌رسد.

negâh kon, otobus dârad mi-rasad.

Look, the bus is arriving. (neutral conversation; event visibly approaching its endpoint)

The achievement verb رسیدن has a natural progressive only when the approach to the endpoint is perceptible. Once the bus has arrived, Persian uses رسید or رسیده است, not an ongoing form.

In edited academic or administrative prose, the simple present often suffices for a current process: کمیته موضوع را بررسی می‌کند can mean “the committee is examining the matter.” دارد بررسی می‌کند is possible when ongoingness is contrastively relevant, but repeated use sounds conversational. The contrast is one of discourse focus, not grammatical correctness.

Current-period activity is not always “right now”

این روزها “these days” and فعلاً “for now” define a temporary period surrounding the present. The action may recur across that period rather than occur at the exact instant of speaking.

این روزها روی یک طرح تازه کار می‌کنیم.

in ruz-hâ ru-ye yek tarh-e tâze kâr mi-konim.

These days we're working on a new project. (temporary current-period activity)

در حال حاضر در خانه‌ی خواهرم زندگی می‌کنم.

dar hâl-e hâzer dar khâne-ye khâhar-am zendegi mi-konam.

At present I'm living at my sister's house. (temporary current situation)

The second sentence does not claim that “living” is a visible action occurring this second. The temporary-period adverb contrasts the current arrangement with a permanent one.

Stative and posture predicates set limits

True states resist the explicit progressive. Say می‌دانم “I know,” دوست دارم “I like,” and possessive دارم “I have,” not دارم می‌دانم or دارم دوست می‌دارم for ordinary current states.

Posture verbs require special attention. می‌نشینم commonly means “I sit down,” “I habitually sit,” or “I will sit”; for the resulting state “I am seated,” Persian naturally uses the participle and copula نشسته‌ام.

الان کنار پنجره نشسته‌ام و کتاب می‌خوانم.

alân kenâr-e panjare nesheste-am-o ketâb mi-khânam.

I'm sitting by the window now and reading a book. (resulting posture plus ongoing activity)

💡
Lexical aspect matters. Activities such as writing accept an ongoing reading easily; states such as knowing reject the explicit progressive; posture often uses a participle such as نشسته‌ام to describe the maintained state.

A short exchange

الان چه کار می‌کنی؟

alân che kâr mi-koni?

What are you doing now? (careful spoken standard)

دارم وسایلم را جمع می‌کنم؛ تا پنج دقیقه‌ی دیگر می‌آیم.

dâram vasâyel-am râ jam' mi-konam; tâ panj daqiqe-ye digar mi-âyam.

I'm gathering my things; I'll come in five minutes. (careful spoken standard)

Without الان, چه کار می‌کنی؟ can also ask about occupation or a normal activity. The explicit progressive answer removes that ambiguity.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English “be” into the progressive

❌ هستم گزارش می‌نویسم.

Incorrect — Persian does not build the progressive with the copula هستم.

✅ دارم گزارش ماهانه را می‌نویسم.

dâram gozâresh-e mâhâne râ mi-nevisam.

I'm writing the monthly report.

2. Putting می‌ on progressive داشتن

❌ می‌دارم نامه می‌نویسم.

Incorrect — progressive auxiliary داشتن appears as دارم, without می‌.

✅ دارم برای مادرم نامه می‌نویسم.

dâram barâ-ye mâdar-am nâme mi-nevisam.

I'm writing a letter to my mother.

3. Mismatching the two persons

❌ من دارم به خانه می‌رود.

Incorrect — both دارم and the main verb must agree with first-person من.

✅ من دارم به خانه برمی‌گردم.

man dâram be khâne bar-mi-gardam.

I'm returning home.

4. Forcing an ordinary state into the progressive

❌ دارم جواب را می‌دانم.

Incorrect — knowing is a state and does not take the ordinary داشتن progressive.

✅ الان جواب درست را می‌دانم.

alân javâb-e dorost râ mi-dânam.

Now I know the correct answer.

5. Using an inceptive posture form for an existing posture

❌ الان روی صندلی می‌نشینم.

as ‘I am sitting on the chair now’

Incorrect for the intended maintained posture — می‌نشینم means I sit down, habitually sit, or will sit.

✅ الان روی صندلی کنار در نشسته‌ام.

alân ru-ye sandali-ye kenâr-e dar nesheste-am.

I'm seated now on the chair beside the door.

Key Takeaways

  • Context can give the ordinary present indicative an ongoing “right now” reading.
  • دارم/داری/... + می‌... explicitly foregrounds an activity as underway.
  • Both finite verbs in the explicit progressive agree with the same subject.
  • Activities accept progressive readings readily; states generally do not.
  • Use نشسته‌ام for a maintained sitting posture, distinct from inceptive or habitual می‌نشینم.
