Balancing Long Persian Sentences

A long Persian sentence succeeds when the reader can predict its architecture before reaching the final verb. Clause chaining, repeated که, anaphoric words such as این امر and آن, and punctuation all help distribute information. Length itself is not the problem; unresolved dependencies are.

Persian's predicate-final tendency creates a special pressure. A heavy subject, several embedded ezâfe chains, and a parenthetical qualification can delay the governing verb too long. Skilled writers balance that pressure by establishing a frame early, repeating necessary linkers, and closing one grammatical unit before opening another. The syntax of deliberate rightward placement is treated separately in Postverbal Heavy Constituents.

English often signals subordination early with overt subjects and auxiliaries. Persian may omit repeated subjects and postpone predicates, so semantic parallelism and agreement have more work to do. A long sentence must still let the reader identify who does each action.

Chain clauses only while the subject remains recoverable

Persian naturally coordinates several predicates under one subject and omits the repeated pronoun. This is elegant when the actions share a participant and form one sequence.

کارشناس داده‌ها را دوباره بررسی کرد، چند خطا را یافت و نسخه‌ی اصلاح‌شده را برای گروه فرستاد.

kârshenâs dâde-hâ râ do-bâre barrasi kard, chand khatâ râ yâft va noskhe-ye eslâh-shode râ barâ-ye goruh ferestâd.

The analyst rechecked the data, found several errors, and sent the corrected version to the group. (neutral formal; one subject across three predicates)

When the subject changes, express the new subject before its first predicate. Otherwise pro-drop encourages the reader to carry the old subject forward.

کارشناس نسخه را فرستاد، دبیر آن را خواند و سردبیر تصمیم نهایی را گرفت.

kârshenâs noskhe râ ferestâd, dabir ân râ khând va sardabir tasmim-e nehâyi râ gereft.

The analyst sent the version, the editor read it, and the chief editor made the final decision. (formal; each subject change is explicit)

💡
In a chain, omit a subject only when the preceding subject remains the intended controller. At every subject change, pay the small cost of a noun phrase to prevent a large reanalysis.

Heavy material belongs in a frame or its own sentence

A long background phrase can appear before the main clause, separated by a comma. This lets the reader finish the background relation before processing the subject and object.

با توجه به تغییر ناگهانی مقررات و محدودیت زمانی اجرای طرح، هیئت مدیره تصمیم گرفت آغاز پروژه را یک ماه به تعویق بیندازد.

bâ tavajjoh be taghyir-e nâgahâni-ye moqarrarât va mahdudiyyat-e zamâni-ye ejrâ-ye tarh, hey'at-e modire tasmim gereft âghâz-e porozhe râ yek mâh be ta'viq bi-andâzad.

Given the sudden regulatory change and the time constraints on implementation, the board decided to postpone the project's start by one month. (formal; heavy cause framed first)

The opening phrase is long but internally complete. By contrast, inserting the same material between تصمیم گرفت and its complement would interrupt a strong verbal dependency. Persian permits material between parts of some predicates, but acceptability is not the same as readability.

هیئت مدیره آغاز پروژه را یک ماه به تعویق انداخت. این تصمیم پس از تغییر مقررات گرفته شد.

hey'at-e modire âghâz-e porozhe râ yek mâh be ta'viq andâkht. in tasmim pas az taghyir-e moqarrarât gerefte shod.

The board postponed the start of the project by one month. This decision was made after the regulations changed. (plain formal; sentence break foregrounds the decision)

The two-sentence version is preferable when the cause will be discussed next. Sentence division is an information-structure choice, not an admission that the writer cannot write complex prose.

Repeat که when the structure needs it

One reporting or cognitive verb can select parallel content clauses. Repeating که before each clause makes the parallelism unmistakable, especially when the first clause is long.

گزارش نشان می‌دهد که مصرف آب کاهش یافته است و اینکه این کاهش در مناطق مرکزی بیشتر بوده است.

gozâresh neshân mi-dahad ke masraf-e âb kâhesh yâfte ast va in-ke in kâhesh dar manâteq-e markazi bishtar bude ast.

The report shows that water consumption has decreased and that the decrease has been greater in central regions. (academic; repeated complement boundary)

Standard prose also permits و این کاهش ..., turning the second proposition into a coordinated clause. Repeated اینکه is useful when both propositions must clearly remain complements of نشان می‌دهد. It can sound heavy if every short complement repeats it.

Nested که clauses are grammatical but require distinct selecting heads:

مدیر گفت که کارشناسان باور دارند که اجرای فوری طرح ممکن نیست.

modir goft ke kârshenâsân bâvar dârand ke ejrâ-ye fowri-ye tarh momken nist.

The manager said that the experts believe that immediate implementation of the plan is impossible. (formal; two levels of reported commitment)

Each که opens the content of the verb immediately before it. If several levels continue, restate the source or divide the sentence so readers do not confuse who holds which view.

💡
Repeated که is not bad style when it marks real layers or parallel complements. It becomes clutter only when the same relation is already short and transparent.

Use anaphora to compress a proposition safely

Anaphoric nouns such as این امر “this fact/matter,” این تصمیم, این روند, and این تغییر summarize prior content and give the next sentence a grammatical topic. Choose a noun that names the antecedent's type.

شرکت مهلت ثبت‌نام را تمدید کرد؛ این تصمیم به داوطلبان فرصت داد مدارک خود را تکمیل کنند.

sherkat mohlat-e sabt-nâm râ tamdid kard; in tasmim be dâvtalabân forsat dâd madârek-e khod râ takmil konand.

The company extended the registration deadline; this decision gave applicants time to complete their documents. (formal; typed anaphora)

دما طی سه دهه پیوسته افزایش یافته است. این روند بدون کاهش انتشار گازها ادامه خواهد یافت.

damâ tey-e se dahe peyvaste afzâyesh yâfte ast. in ravand bedun-e kâhesh-e enteshâr-e gâz-hâ edâme khâhad yâft.

The temperature has risen steadily over three decades. This trend will continue without a reduction in gas emissions. (academic; روند retrieves a process)

Bare این can mean “this one” and may have several plausible referents. A typed anaphor improves precision; it should not hide a vague antecedent behind formal vocabulary.

Punctuation marks structure, not breath alone

Use a comma after a fronted subordinate or framing phrase. Use a semicolon between closely related independent clauses when their internal commas make simple coordination hard to scan. Use a full stop when the second clause changes topic or makes a new argumentative move.

اگر نتیجه تا فردا تأیید شود، گزارش منتشر می‌شود؛ در غیر این صورت، آزمایش تکرار خواهد شد.

agar natije tâ fardâ ta'yid shavad, gozâresh montasher mi-shavad; dar gheyr-e in surat, âzmâyesh tekrâr khâhad shod.

If the result is confirmed by tomorrow, the report will be published; otherwise, the experiment will be repeated. (formal; balanced alternatives)

The two halves share a decision frame and have matched cadence. Controlled cadence arises from comparable syntactic weight, not from making every phrase the same length.

From speech to edited prose

Conversation often chains clauses with و، بعد، که and relies on intonation. That is natural (informal), but a transcript copied into formal prose can obscure hierarchy.

— جلسه طول کشید و بعد مدیر گفت که گزارش ناقص است و باید دوباره بررسی‌اش کنیم. — پس نتیجه را فردا اعلام می‌کنیم.

— jalase tul keshid va ba'd modir goft ke gozâresh nâqes ast va bâyad do-bâre barrasi-ash konim. — pas natije râ fardâ e'lâm mi-konim.

— The meeting ran long, and then the manager said the report was incomplete and we had to review it again. — Then we'll announce the result tomorrow. (careful conversation; intonation supports the chain)

An edited account could divide this after طول کشید and specify whether the manager or the group must review the report. Spoken fluency and written transparency have different resources.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving a clause without its predicate

❌ پژوهشگر داده‌ها را فرستاد و گروه بررسی کرد و مدیر نتیجه را.

Incorrect — the final clause has a subject and object but no predicate; parallel clause chaining cannot supply the missing verb automatically.

✅ پژوهشگر داده‌ها را فرستاد، گروه آن‌ها را بررسی کرد و مدیر نتیجه را اعلام کرد.

pazhuheshgar dâde-hâ râ ferestâd, goruh ân-hâ râ barrasi kard va modir natije râ e'lâm kard.

The researcher sent the data, the group examined them, and the manager announced the result.

2. Losing the selector of a nested که-clause

❌ مدیر که کارشناسان که طرح ممکن نیست گفت.

Incorrect — the two که clauses have no transparent selecting verbs or boundaries.

✅ مدیر گفت که کارشناسان معتقدند اجرای طرح در این زمان ممکن نیست.

modir goft ke kârshenâsân mo'taqed-and ejrâ-ye tarh dar in zamân momken nist.

The manager said that the experts believe implementing the plan at this time is impossible.

3. Giving bare این an unclear antecedent

❌ فروش کاهش یافت و هزینه‌ها بالا رفت و این ادامه داشتند.

Incorrect — singular این cannot take plural داشتند, and its antecedent remains unclear.

✅ فروش کاهش یافت، اما افزایش هزینه‌ها ادامه داشت.

forush kâhesh yâft, ammâ afzâyesh-e hazine-hâ edâme dâsht.

Sales declined, but the increase in costs continued.

4. Joining independent heavy clauses with commas alone

❌ بررسی تمام شد، داده‌ها ناقص بود، آزمایش را تکرار کردیم.

Incorrectly punctuated formal prose — three independent propositions need explicit relations or stronger boundaries.

✅ بررسی تمام شد؛ بااین‌حال، چون داده‌ها ناقص بود، آزمایش را تکرار کردیم.

barrasi tamâm shod; bâ-in-hâl, chun dâde-hâ nâqes bud, âzmâyesh râ tekrâr kardim.

The review ended; nevertheless, because the data were incomplete, we repeated the experiment.

Key Takeaways

  • Chain predicates under one omitted subject only while that subject remains recoverable.
  • Move heavy background into an opening frame or a separate sentence.
  • Repeat که when it clarifies parallel complements or real embedding.
  • Use a typed anaphor such as این تصمیم or این روند when bare این is ambiguous.
  • Punctuation displays grammatical and argumentative grouping; it cannot repair a sentence whose dependencies are unclear.
