Persian can replace an unstressed pronominal complement of certain prepositions with one of the six enclitics: بهش “to him/her/it,” ازشان “from them,” برایم “for me.” The clitic and its host form one phonological and written unit, but the available combinations are partly lexical. You cannot attach every clitic to every preposition by a single mechanical rule.
This B2 page focuses on host selection, standard spelling, formal expansion, and ambiguity. The core six forms and their basic meanings are reviewed on Clitics on Prepositions.
The same six forms, licensed by a host
| Person | After از: standard / Tehran | After برای: standard / Tehran | Expanded form |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st singular | ازم / ازم | برایم / برام | از من / برای من |
| 2nd singular | ازت / ازت | برایت / برات | از تو / برای تو |
| 3rd singular | ازش / ازش | برایش / براش | از او / برای او |
| 1st plural | ازمان / ازمون | برایمان / برامون | از ما / برای ما |
| 2nd plural/polite | ازتان / ازتون | برایتان / براتون | از شما / برای شما |
| 3rd plural | ازشان / ازشون | برایشان / براشون | از آنها / برای آنها |
The first form in each table cell is the standard compact form; the second is everyday (informal: Tehran). With از, the singular spellings coincide, while colloquial plural clitics use ـمون، ـتون، ـشون. The compact برای series is standard in speech and writing, while Tehran conversation usually shortens its host to براـ (and also uses واسه). Formal prose often expands third-person reference to از او، از آنها, or respectful از ایشان.
پاسخ این پرسش برایم روشن نیست.
pâsokh-e in porsesh barâ-yam rowshan nist.
The answer to this question is not clear to me. (neutral standard)
ازشان خواستم تا پایان هفته صبر کنند.
az-eshân khâstam tâ pâyân-e hafte sabr konand.
I asked them to wait until the end of the week. (written standard, compact)
نسخهی نهایی را برایتان ارسال کردهام.
noskhe-ye nahâyi râ barâ-yetân ersâl karde-am.
I have sent you the final version. (formal/polite)
به and با have special colloquial shapes
With به, everyday speech commonly uses بهم، بهت، بهش، بهمون، بهتون، بهشون. In بهش beh-esh, the normally silent written ه of به is pronounced before the clitic and its linking vowel. Formal writing generally favors full phrases such as به من، به او، به ما, or respectful به ایشان, especially when dignity or reference clarity matters.
فردا بهش توضیح میدهم چرا برنامه عوض شد.
fardâ beh-esh towzih mi-daham cherâ barnâme avaz shod.
Tomorrow I will explain to him/her why the plan changed. (careful conversational Persian)
موضوع را به ایشان توضیح دادیم و نظرشان را پرسیدیم.
mowzu râ be ishân towzih dâdim va nazar-eshân râ porsidim.
We explained the matter to them and asked their opinion. (formal/respectful)
ایشان is an independent respectful pronoun, not an enclitic. It normally triggers plural agreement even when it respectfully refers to one person. Thus به ایشان گفتیم is an expansion, while *به ایشانش incorrectly attempts to express the same complement twice.
The ordinary (informal: Tehran) forms with با are باهام، باهات، باهاش، باهامون، باهاتون، باهاشون. Standard prose uses با من، با تو، با او, and so forth.
دیروز باهاش حرف زدم؛ حالش بهتره.
diruz bâhâsh harf zadam; hâl-ash behtare.
I talked with him/her yesterday; he/she is feeling better. (informal: Tehran)
در این مورد با او گفتوگو کردم.
dar in mowred bâ u goft-o-gu kardam.
I discussed this matter with him/her. (formal-neutral)
Complex and relational hosts
Many complex prepositions end in a noun-like element that can host the clitic: کنارش “beside him/her/it,” پشتشان “behind them,” دربارهاش “about him/her/it.” The clitic replaces the independent complement that would otherwise follow through ezâfe.
دربارهاش اطلاعات کافی نداریم.
darbâre-ash ettelâ'ât-e kâfi na-dârim.
We do not have enough information about it/him/her. (neutral standard)
صندلی خالی بود و کیفم را کنارش گذاشتم.
sandali khâli bud va kif-am râ kenâr-ash gozâshtam.
The chair was empty, and I put my bag beside it. (neutral standard)
After silent ه, دربارهاش uses a ZWNJ before the clitic. It does not use the visible ezâfe spelling هی, because the following element is an enclitic rather than an independent noun phrase. Compare دربارهی طرح with دربارهاش.
در گزارش دربارهی طرح نوشتهاند، اما دربارهاش تصمیم نگرفتهاند.
dar gozâresh darbâre-ye tarh neveshte-and, ammâ darbâre-ash tasmim nagerefte-and.
They have written about the plan in the report, but they have not decided on it. (formal-neutral)
Review the spelling contrast on possessive enclitics after vowels and ه.
Not every preposition accepts direct attachment
The system has lexical gaps. Standard modern Persian does not freely make *درم for “in me” or *تایش for “until it.” Use an independent complement: در آن، تا آن زمان. For concrete “in it,” (informal: Tehran) Persian normally uses توش, built on colloquial تو rather than formal در.
کلید توی اون کیفه؛ لطف میکنی توش دنبالش بگردی؟
kelid tu-ye un kife; lotf mi-koni tu-sh donbâl-ash be-gardi?
The key is in that bag; would you look for it inside? (informal: Tehran)
Controlled formal phrasing would use کلید در آن کیف است and rephrase the request as لطف میکنید داخل آن دنبال کلید بگردید؟
There is no contradiction between a clitic attaching broadly and particular hosts rejecting it. Clitics require both a phonological host and a lexically licensed construction.
Formal expansion and contrastive focus
Because clitics are unstressed, full pronouns are better for contrast, coordination, and highly formal reference. برای من، نه برای او cannot be reduced without losing the contrast. از ایشان may respectfully refer to a senior individual or a group and remains a separate phrase.
این مسئولیت برای من است، نه برای شما.
in mas'uliyyat barâ-ye man ast, na barâ-ye shomâ.
This responsibility is for me, not for you. (contrastive standard)
از ایشان درخواست کردیم جلسه را اداره کنند.
az ishân darkhâst kardim jalse râ edâre konand.
We asked them/the respected person to chair the meeting. (formal/respectful)
In informal speech, ازش خواستیم would be natural if the referent were accessible and no contrast intended. Register, discourse prominence, and potential ambiguity all influence the choice.
Ambiguity comes from the host
The same suffixes mark possession and prepositional objects. کنارش in کنارش نشستم means “beside him/her,” but in a sufficiently noun-like context it can mean “his/her side.” پشتش can mean “behind him/her” or “his/her back.” Sentence structure normally resolves the ambiguity.
پشتش ایستادم تا عکس را بگیرم.
posht-ash istâdam tâ aks râ be-giram.
I stood behind him/her to take the photo. (spatial reading)
پشتش از حمل کیف سنگین درد گرفته بود.
posht-ash az haml-e kif-e sangin dard gerefte bud.
His/Her back had begun to hurt from carrying a heavy bag. (possessive reading)
This ambiguity is structural, not gender-related: ـش never distinguishes “his,” “her,” or “its.” Expand the phrase if two third-person antecedents compete.
Common Mistakes
1. Separating the enclitic from its host
❌ این صندلی برای م است.
Incorrect — an enclitic cannot be written as an independent word.
✅ این صندلی برایم مناسب است.
in sandali barâ-yam monâseb ast.
This chair is suitable for me.
2. Doubling an independent pronoun and clitic
❌ به اوش نتیجه را گفتیم.
Incorrect — او and ـش attempt to fill the same prepositional-complement position.
✅ به او نتیجه را گفتیم.
be u natije râ goftim.
We told him/her the result.
3. Adding را after a prepositional clitic
❌ بهش را اعتماد دارم.
Incorrect — بهش is already a complete prepositional complement, not a direct object.
✅ بهش اعتماد دارم.
beh-esh e'temâd dâram.
I trust him/her. (careful conversational Persian)
4. Extending attachment to an unlicensed host
❌ مدارک درش است.
Incorrect for standard ‘the documents are in it’ — در does not productively take this enclitic object.
✅ مدارک در آن پوشه است.
madârek dar ân pushe ast.
The documents are in that folder. (standard)
Key Takeaways
- Preposition–clitic combinations are lexically licensed; learn complete forms rather than attaching endings blindly.
- برایم/برایشان are standard, while بهش is strongest in speech and باهات/باهاش are (informal: Tehran).
- از ایشان، به او, and other full forms serve formality, respect, contrast, and disambiguation.
- After silent ه, write دربارهاش with ZWNJ; with an independent complement, write دربارهی موضوع.
- Forms such as کنارش and پشتش can be spatial or possessive; context and expansion resolve ambiguity.
