Possessive clitics attach easily after a consonant, but vowel-final hosts require visible spelling choices and smooth transitions in pronunciation. Compare کتابم ketâb-am, خانهام khâne-am, پایم pâ-yam, صندلیام sandali-am, and کتابهایم ketâb-hâ-yam. The possessor is “my” in every form; what changes is the boundary between the host and the clitic.
Three spellings matter. After silent final ه and after final ی, standard writing normally uses a ZWNJ before the vowel-initial singular clitics. After ا or و, a written ی supplies the glide. After plural ـها, the same ی appears before the clitic. These patterns must not be confused with ezâfe هی before an independent possessor.
Boundary map
| Host ending | “my” | “our” | Pronunciation strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
The exact vowels of the plural-person clitics vary with the phonological host. After a consonant, ـمان begins with e in ketâb-emân. After silent ه or final ی, the consonantal clitic follows the already pronounced vowel: khâne-mân, sandali-mân. After ا، و، ها, a y transition is pronounced and written.
After silent final ه
Words such as خانه, نامه, and بچه end in written ه but in the vowel e. Singular clitics beginning with a vowel are separated by a ZWNJ: خانهام، خانهات، خانهاش. Plural-person forms attach after the same boundary: خانهمان، خانهتان، خانهشان.
خانهام تا ایستگاه ده دقیقه فاصله دارد.
khâne-am tâ istgâh dah daqiqe fâsele dârad.
My home is ten minutes from the station. (neutral standard)
نامهاش دیروز به دستم رسید.
nâme-ash diruz be dast-am resid.
His or her letter reached me yesterday. (neutral standard)
بچهتان در حیاط منتظر شماست.
bachche-tân dar hayât montazer-e shomâ-st.
Your child is waiting for you in the yard. (polite, careful spoken standard)
Do not insert ی before a possessive clitic after silent ه. خانهی من has هی because an independent pronoun follows through ezâfe. The compact clitic form is خانهام, not خانهیام.
After ا and و: written ی as a glide
After a word ending in ا or vowel و, Persian inserts a pronounced y before the clitic and writes ی: پایم pâ-yam, صدایت sedâ-yat, بازویش bâzu-yash. This avoids a difficult vowel sequence and makes the boundary visible.
صدایت از پشت تلفن واضح نیست.
sedâ-yat az posht-e telefon vâzeh nist.
Your voice isn't clear over the phone. (neutral standard)
پایش هنوز درد میکند.
pâ-yash hanuz dard mi-konad.
His or her foot still hurts. (neutral standard)
بازویمان بعد از تمرین درد گرفته بود.
bâzu-yemân ba'd az tamrin dard gerefte bud.
Our arms had become sore after training. (careful standard; context gives a distributive body-part reading)
In ordinary typography, ی is a real written letter here, not a romanization convention. Omitting it produces a nonstandard or misleading form. The same glide appears with an independent ezâfe dependent: صدای من sedâ-ye man.
After final ی
When the spelling already ends in ی, do not add another visible ی. A ZWNJ protects the boundary before the clitic: صندلیام, همکاریاش, دانشجوییمان. In careful pronunciation, speakers maintain enough transition to keep the vowels intelligible; everyday Tehran speech may smooth or compress the sequence.
صندلیام را نزدیک پنجره گذاشتم.
sandali-am râ nazdik-e panjare gozâshtam.
I put my chair near the window. (neutral standard)
همکاریشان تا پایان سال ادامه دارد.
hamkâri-shân tâ pâyân-e sâl edâme dârad.
Their cooperation will continue until the end of the year. (formal-neutral)
The written ZWNJ is not a pause. It prevents inappropriate joining and records a morphological boundary. Do not replace it with a full space: صندلی ام incorrectly makes the clitic look independent.
After plural ها
Plural ـها ends in â, so possessive clitics use ی: کتابهایم, دوستهایت, عکسهایش, پروندههایمان. The order is noun + plural + possessive; the possessor belongs to the whole plural set.
عکسهایت را برای مادرت فرستادی؟
aks-hâ-yat râ barâ-ye mâdar-at ferestâdi?
Did you send your photos to your mother? (careful spoken standard)
پروندههایشان هنوز کامل نشده است.
parvande-hâ-yeshân hanuz kâmel nashode ast.
Their files still have not been completed. (formal written standard; inanimate plural with singular agreement)
Note the two boundaries in پروندههایشان: silent-he stem + plural ها, then glide ی + possessive شان. Learners often see only the final clitic and miss the structure. Plural and Comparative with ZWNJ explains the first boundary.
A short standard–colloquial contrast
خانهتان نزدیک است؟
khâne-tân nazdik ast?
Is your home nearby? (careful spoken standard; polite/plural your)
خونهتون نزدیکه؟
khune-tun nazdike?
Is your place nearby? (informal, regional: Tehran)
Colloquial Tehran Persian often uses ـمون، ـتون، ـشون for plural-person clitics and reduces خانه to خونه. These are normal informal forms, not misspellings of the standard forms. Keep خانهتان and khâne-tân in standard writing; use خونهتون only when the colloquial register is explicitly intended.
Common Mistakes
1. Using هی before an enclitic
❌ خانهیام نزدیک است.
Incorrect — هی introduces an ezâfe dependent; possessive ـم attaches as خانهام.
✅ خانهام نزدیک است.
khâne-am nazdik ast.
My home is nearby.
2. Dropping هی before an independent pronoun
❌ نامه من روی میز است.
Incorrect spelling and pronunciation for ‘my letter’ with independent من; silent ه takes written هی.
✅ نامهی من روی میز است.
nâme-ye man ru-ye miz ast.
My letter is on the table. (independent possessor)
3. Omitting the written glide after ا
❌ صدام را ضبط کردم.
Incorrect — a ZWNJ cannot replace the glide after final ا; write the real letter ی in صدایم.
✅ صدایم را ضبط کردم.
sedâ-yam râ zabt kardam.
I recorded my voice. (standard)
4. Putting the possessor before plural ها
❌ کتابمها روی میز هستند.
Incorrect — plural marking precedes the possessive clitic.
✅ کتابهایم روی میز هستند.
ketâb-hâ-yam ru-ye miz hastand.
My books are on the table.
Key Takeaways
- After silent ه, use a ZWNJ: خانهام، خانهتان. Do not insert هی before an enclitic.
- After final ا or vowel و, write the glide ی: پایم، بازویش.
- After final ی, keep one ی and mark the boundary with ZWNJ: صندلیام.
- After plural ـها, write glide ی before the possessor: کتابهایم.
- Colloquial ـمون، ـتون، ـشون and خونه are everyday Tehran forms; standard prose keeps ـمان، ـتان، ـشان and خانه.
