Coordination allows one Persian modifier or possessor to be interpreted with more than one noun, and it allows repeated material to remain unspoken. In پدر و مادر من pedar va mâdar-e man, the possessor من naturally applies to both parents even though audible ezâfe occurs only after مادر. This economy is ordinary Persian, but less conventional combinations can create real scope ambiguity.
“Ezâfe ellipsis” is a useful practical label, not a claim that speakers delete an isolated -e. The linker is an enclitic that needs a host and a dependent; it cannot be left hanging before و. What is shared or understood is a noun, modifier, or larger phrase. Good editing makes that understood structure recoverable.
The wider syntax of omitted and distributed material is developed on Coordination and Shared Constituents.
Coordinated adjectives share one initial link
When two adjectives jointly modify one noun, ezâfe appears after the head, and و coordinates the adjectives: کتاب مفید و خواندنی ketâb-e mofid va khândani. Do not insert another linker before the second adjective merely because English repeats both ... and.
| Structure | Persian | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| one head, two coordinated adjectives | کتاب مفید و خواندنی | both adjectives describe کتاب |
| one head, adjective chain | کتاب مفید استاد | استاد continues the ezâfe chain after مفید |
| two heads, shared possessor | پدر و مادر من | من normally applies to both parents |
| two heads, potentially shared adjective | کتاب و مقالهی جدید | جدید may be read narrowly or distributively |
این مقالهی دقیق و خواندنی را برای کلاس انتخاب کردم.
in maghâle-ye daghigh va khândani râ barâ-ye kelâs entekhâb kardam.
I chose this precise and readable article for the class.
طرح ساده ولی مؤثر هیئت را قانع کرد.
tarh-e sâde vali mo'asser hey'at râ ghâne' kard.
The simple but effective plan convinced the committee.
The adjective coordinate forms one dependent domain. By contrast, if a further possessor follows both adjectives, the final adjective carries the next ezâfe link: برنامههای آموزشی و پژوهشی دانشگاه barnâme-hâ-ye âmuzeshi va pazhuheshi-ye dâneshgâh.
برنامههای آموزشی و پژوهشی دانشگاه بازبینی شد.
barnâme-hâ-ye âmuzeshi va pazhuheshi-ye dâneshgâh bâzbini shod.
The university's educational and research programs were reviewed. (formal)
A final possessor can distribute over coordinated heads
With strongly associated pairs, a possessor after the second noun naturally takes scope over both: پدر و مادر من, خواهر و برادر سارا, رنگ و اندازهی لباس. Only the noun next to the possessor audibly hosts ezâfe.
پدر و مادر من فردا به تهران میآیند.
pedar va mâdar-e man fardâ be tehrân mi-âyand.
My father and mother are coming to Tehran tomorrow.
رنگ و اندازهی پرده با اتاق هماهنگ است.
rang va andâze-ye parde bâ otâgh hamâhang ast.
The curtain's color and size match the room.
This distribution is licensed by coordination and plausible meaning, not by a special plural ezâfe. Repeating the possessor is possible when contrast matters: پدر من و مادر تو “my father and your mother.”
پدر من و مادر تو پیش از ظهر رسیدند.
pedar-e man va mâdar-e to pish az zohr residand.
My father and your mother arrived before noon.
Shared modifiers can be ambiguous
In کتاب و مقالهی جدید, adjacency favors “the book and the new article,” but an appropriate context can distribute جدید over both: “the new book and article.” Persian does not provide brackets in speech or ordinary unpointed writing. Prosody may suggest a grouping, but formal prose should not make a consequential distinction depend on subtle intonation.
کتاب و مقالهی جدید روی میز بود.
ketâb va maghâle-ye jadid ru-ye miz bud.
The book and the new article were on the table; context may let جدید apply to both.
Repeat the modifier for guaranteed distributive scope:
کتاب جدید و مقالهی جدید را خواندم.
ketâb-e jadid va maghâle-ye jadid râ khândam.
I read the new book and the new article.
Or separate the clauses for narrow scope:
کتاب را برداشتم و مقالهی جدید را خواندم.
ketâb râ bardâshtam va maghâle-ye jadid râ khândam.
I picked up the book and read the new article.
Shared institutional modifiers
Formal Persian often places one institutional possessor after two coordinated human or abstract heads: دانشجویان و استادان دانشگاه, اهداف و سیاستهای سازمان. A reader normally distributes the final possessor over both when the pair forms a coherent set.
دانشجویان و استادان دانشگاه در جلسه شرکت کردند.
dâneshjuyân va ostâdân-e dâneshgâh dar jalase sherkat kardand.
The university's students and professors attended the meeting.
اهداف و سیاستهای سازمان باید روشن باشد.
ahdâf va siyâsat-hâ-ye sâzmân bâyad rowshan bâshad.
The organization's goals and policies must be clear. (formal)
When the first noun could plausibly belong elsewhere, repeat the institutional phrase: دانشجویان دانشگاه و استادان دانشگاه. The longer wording is deliberately explicit.
Ellipsis of a repeated head
Persian can omit a recoverable noun and let an adjective stand for the missing phrase. In نسخهی فارسی آماده است، اما انگلیسی هنوز نه, انگلیسی means “the English version.” There is no silent ezâfe after it; the adjective functions independently once the repeated head is omitted.
نسخهی فارسی آماده است، اما انگلیسی هنوز نه.
noskhe-ye fârsi âmâde ast, ammâ englisi hanuz na.
The Persian version is ready, but the English one is not yet.
The gap is licensed because the two versions are contrastive and the missing noun is unmistakable. If several potential heads intervene, repeat نسخه. Ellipsis that forces a reader to backtrack has failed its communicative purpose.
Coordination is not a license to strand ezâfe
Persian does not say a form equivalent to “book-e and article-e new” by pronouncing ezâfe after کتاب immediately before و. Either the final coordinate hosts a shared modifier, or each full noun phrase contains its own modifier.
گزارش کوتاه و یادداشت مفصل را بایگانی کردم.
gozâresh-e kutâh va yâddâsht-e mofassal râ bâygâni kardam.
I archived the short report and the detailed note.
Here each adjective has its own head. The single را follows the complete coordinated object, just as a shared possessor follows the complete coordination domain.
A formal editing exchange
این عبارت، کارکنان و مدیران جدید، مبهم است.
in ebârat, kârkonân va modirân-e jadid, mobham ast.
This phrase, ‘new employees and managers,’ is ambiguous. (formal)
پس بنویسید کارکنان جدید و مدیران جدید.
pas benevisid kârkonân-e jadid va modirân-e jadid.
Then write ‘new employees and new managers.’ (formal)
The revision is longer by one adjective and clearer by an entire interpretation.
Prosody and punctuation as limited evidence
Speakers can group coordinated material through timing and prominence. A slight boundary after the first noun may encourage narrow scope, while a tightly integrated pair such as پدر و مادر favors a shared possessor. These cues guide an attentive listener, but they do not create a grammatical bracket that every listener must recover identically. Recording quality, speech rate, and regional rhythm can erase the distinction.
Punctuation is even less powerful. A comma can separate two full noun phrases or mark an inserted comment, but it cannot be placed between an ezâfe host and its dependent merely to advertise scope. Parentheses can clarify an editor's explanation; they should not be used to disguise an overloaded original sentence.
Register also affects acceptable risk. Conversation can repair a wrong interpretation immediately, and familiar pairs make ellipsis effortless. A regulation, consent form, or examination question has no such repair channel. In those genres, repeat the head or modifier, even when a literary stylist would prefer economy. The result may be less elegant but more accountable.
Finally, do not confuse phonetic reduction of و with structural omission. In connected speech, و may be pronounced very lightly, often close to o, while the coordinated relation remains fully present. Ezâfe placement is determined by the structure on either side, not by how strongly the conjunction is articulated.
Common Mistakes
1. Stranding ezâfe before و
❌ کتاب و مقالهی مفید
ketâb-e va maghâle-ye mofid
Incorrect pronunciation — ezâfe cannot be stranded before the coordinator.
✅ کتاب و مقالهی مفید را نگه داشتم.
ketâb va maghâle-ye mofid râ negah dâshtam.
I kept the book and the useful article; context may distribute مفید more widely.
2. Assuming a final modifier must distribute
✅ کارکنان و مدیران جدید اخراج شدند.
kârkonân va modirân-e jadid ekhrâj shodand.
The employees and new managers were dismissed; context may instead distribute جدید over both groups.
✅ کارکنان جدید و مدیران جدید اخراج شدند.
kârkonân-e jadid va modirân-e jadid ekhrâj shodand.
The new employees and the new managers were dismissed.
Both sentences are grammatical. Use the repeated version when the intended distributed reading must be explicit rather than inferred from context.
3. Repeating only the linker instead of the phrase
❌ رنگ و اندازه پرده مهم است.
Incorrect intended shared-possession reading — اندازه requires visible هی before پرده.
✅ رنگ و اندازهی این پرده مهم است.
rang va andâze-ye in parde mohem ast.
The color and size of this curtain are important.
4. Carrying ezâfe into an elliptical adjective
❌ نسخهی فارسی دیروز آماده شد، اما انگلیسی هنوز نه.
noskhe-ye fârsi diruz âmâde shod, ammâ englisi-ye hanuz na
Incorrect reading — after نسخه is omitted, انگلیسی stands independently and does not host a trailing ezâfe.
✅ نسخهی چاپی آماده است، اما دیجیتالی هنوز نه.
noskhe-ye châpi âmâde ast, ammâ dijitâli hanuz na.
The print version is ready, but the digital one is not yet.
5. Letting English order obscure shared scope
❌ دانشگاه استادان و دانشجویان
Incorrect for ‘the university's professors and students’ — the shared possessor follows the coordinated heads.
✅ استادان و دانشجویان دانشگاه بیانیه را خواندند.
ostâdân va dâneshjuyân-e dâneshgâh bayâniye râ khândand.
The university's professors and students read the statement.
Key Takeaways
- Coordination can let one final modifier or possessor apply to several heads, but distribution depends on syntax, convention, and context.
- Ezâfe is never stranded before و; what is omitted is recoverable lexical material, not a free-standing linker.
- A final adjective can have narrow or distributed scope. Repeat it when the distinction matters.
- Formal editing values explicit structure over elegant but consequential ambiguity.
