English teaching often gives a sequence-of-tense rule: after said, present becomes past and will becomes would. Applying that conversion automatically to Persian creates the error treated here. A past reporting verb such as گفت، توضیح داد، اعلام کرد does not force the verb after که one step backward. Persian normally retains the tense that locates the reported situation from the intended viewpoint.
Thus نگار گفت که هنوز در تهران زندگی میکند means “Negar said that she still lives in Tehran.” Past گفت and present زندگی میکند are perfectly compatible. If the residence belonged only to a past interval, زندگی میکرد becomes appropriate. The tense difference conveys a real temporal difference; it is not grammatical agreement with گفت.
Diagnose Before You Correct
Separate four decisions:
- Event time: Does the reported state hold now, only then, before then, or later?
- Deictic center: Do امروز، فردا، اینجا still point to the correct day and place?
- Participants: Do pronouns, possessive clitics, and verb endings still identify the intended speaker and subject?
- Evidence/viewpoint: Is the report a finished event, a currently relevant perfect, or an inference/report based on evidence?
| Intended relation | Natural Persian choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| state still valid | گفت که خسته است | present validity is retained |
| state viewed at report time | گفت که خسته بود | past locates the state then without asserting whether it still holds |
| event prior to report/currently relevant | گفت که نامه را فرستاده است | perfect preserves anterior/result viewpoint |
| later plan | گفت که فردا میآید | futurate present remains available |
The full system is introduced on Reported Speech and Tense Retention. This clinic targets the points at which English transfer survives even after learners know the forms.
Common Mistakes
1. Backshifting a Future Plan Mechanically
Suppose Sara's trip is still tomorrow when you report it. English may say Sara said she would come tomorrow, but Persian keeps the futurate present. میآمد instead invites a past habitual, backgrounded, or counterfactual interpretation.
❌ سارا گفت که فردا برای مصاحبه میآمد.
Incorrect for the intended still-future one-time plan — English would does not license automatic میآمد.
✅ سارا گفت که فردا برای مصاحبه میآید.
Sârâ goft ke fardâ barâ-ye mosâhebe mi-âyad.
Sara said that she is coming tomorrow for the interview.
2. Turning a Still-True State into a Past-Only State
Past بود is grammatical Persian, but it does not merely imitate English was. It normally locates the state in a past interval and leaves present validity open. Use present است when the report adopts the proposition as still valid.
⚠️ پزشک گفت که نتیجهی آزمایش طبیعی بود.
pezeshk goft ke natije-ye âzmâyesh tabi'i bud.
The doctor said that the test result was normal. (grammatical; frames normality in the past or withholds present endorsement)
✅ پزشک امروز گفت که نتیجهی آزمایش طبیعی است.
pezeshk emruz goft ke natije-ye âzmâyesh tabi'i ast.
The doctor said today that the test result is normal. (the result is presented as currently valid)
This is the required semantic judgment: both forms can be well formed, but they do not make the same temporal commitment.
3. Retaining Tomorrow after the Deictic Center Has Moved
Tense retention does not mean blindly retaining every time word. If a statement is retold a week later, the original فردا can misidentify tomorrow relative to the new reporting moment. Replace it with روز بعد when that is the intended day.
⚠️ ناهید سهشنبه گفت که فردا قرارداد را امضا میکند، و من این را یک هفته بعد گزارش میکنم.
Nâhid se-shanbe goft ke fardâ gharârdâd râ emzâ mi-konad, va man in râ yek hafte ba'd gozâresh mi-konam.
Grammatical, but incorrectly anchored in the stated retelling context: فردا now points to the wrong day.
✅ ناهید سهشنبه گفت که روز بعد قرارداد را امضا میکند.
Nâhid se-shanbe goft ke ruz-e ba'd gharârdâd râ emzâ mi-konad.
Nahid said on Tuesday that she would sign the contract the next day.
If you report the words on the same day and the original tomorrow is still tomorrow, فردا remains natural. Deictic adjustment follows context, not a mandatory indirect-speech chart.
4. Retaining the Original First Person
Person reference is independent of tense. When Reza's من میآیم becomes your report, third-person verb agreement normally tracks Reza. Persian often omits the reported subject entirely when it is clear.
❌ رضا گفت که من ساعت چهار میآید.
Incorrect — first-person من conflicts with third-person میآید and would refer to the current reporter.
✅ رضا گفت که ساعت چهار به دفتر میآید.
Rezâ goft ke sâ'at-e chahâr be daftar mi-âyad.
Reza said that he is coming to the office at four.
5. Flattening an Anterior Perfect into a Simple Past
The simple past after گفت is possible, but it narrates a finished event. If the original claim concerns a completed action relevant at the reporting point, retain the perfect.
⚠️ لیلا گفت که مدارک را صبح فرستاد.
Leylâ goft ke madârek râ sobh ferestâd.
Leila said that she sent the documents in the morning. (grammatical; narrates a dated past event)
✅ لیلا گفت که مدارک را فرستاده است و منتظر پاسخ است.
Leylâ goft ke madârek râ ferestâde ast va montazer-e pâsokh ast.
Leila said that she has sent the documents and is waiting for a response. (anterior action with current relevance)
The Persian perfect can also signal reported or inferred evidence, especially in third-person contexts. That layer is explained on The Present Perfect as an Evidential.
6. Breaking the Imperfective Prefix at the Report Boundary
The reporting clause boundary does not alter ordinary verb spelling. Productive می remains attached to the verb by ZWNJ; a full space is not standard orthography.
❌ مدیر گفت که سامانه فردا کار می کند.
Incorrect standard spelling — می and کند require a ZWNJ, not a full space.
✅ مدیر گفت که سامانه از فردا دوباره کار میکند.
modir goft ke sâmâne az fardâ dobâre kâr mi-konad.
The manager said that the system will work again starting tomorrow.
Register and Reporting Style
Careful standard and formal Persian usually keep که when it makes a long clause boundary clearer. (Informal, regional: Tehran) speech often omits it and reduces endings: گفت فردا میاد. This colloquial compression does not create an English-style backshift rule.
مونا گفت فردا دیر میاد چون کلاس داره.
Munâ goft fardâ dir miyâd chun kelâs dâre.
Mona said she'll be late tomorrow because she has class. (informal, regional: Tehran; present forms retained)
Formal source attribution may combine اعلام کرد with a present, future, past, or perfect complement. The choice reflects when the proposition holds and how the writer presents its evidence—not formal concord.
Key Takeaways
- Persian has no obligatory English-style backshift after a past reporting verb.
- Present, past, and perfect inside the report make real temporal and viewpoint contrasts.
- Adjust امروز، فردا، اینجا only when the reporting center changes.
- Change person and possession to preserve reference, independently of tense.
- Retain ordinary ZWNJ spelling and keep colloquial reduction separate from temporal grammar.
