Modernizing a classical Persian text can mean several different operations: replacing obsolete letter forms, regularizing spacing, supplying punctuation, proposing a vocalization, explaining old grammar, or rewriting the passage in present-day prose. Only the last operation is a full paraphrase. If an editor silently moves from one layer to another, a readable “modernized text” may express a meaning the source never had.
This clinic uses constructed classical-style demonstrations unless an example explicitly states otherwise. Constructed examples avoid pretending that an invented line belongs to a historical author. The same editorial discipline applies to public-domain poetry and prose: record the witness first, then label every normalization and interpretation.
Keep Four Editorial Products Separate
| Product | May change | Must preserve or disclose |
|---|---|---|
| diplomatic transcription | as little as possible | visible letters, spacing, lineation, deletions, additions |
| normalized edition | character variants, predictable spacing, editorial punctuation | lexical identity and recoverable source wording |
| vocalized or annotated reading | supplied vowels, segmentation, grammatical labels | that the reading is editorial analysis |
| modern paraphrase | morphology, order, vocabulary, explicit subjects | propositional meaning and every interpretive addition |
مصحح صورت نسخه، متن نرمالشده و بازنویسی امروزی را در سه بخش جدا چاپ کرد.
mosahheh surat-e noskhe, matn-e normâl-shode va bâznevisi-ye emruzi râ dar se bakhsh-e jodâ châp kard.
The editor printed the witness form, normalized text, and modern rewriting in three separate sections. (modern academic Persian)
هر واژهای که در بازنویسی افزودهایم داخل قلاب آمده است.
har vâzhe-i ke dar bâznevisi afzude-im dâkhel-e qollâb âmade ast.
Every word we supplied in the rewriting appears in brackets. (modern editorial statement)
The reader can now distinguish evidence from explanation. “Easier Persian” is not permission to hide which nouns, pronouns, or causal links were supplied.
Historical Morphology Carries Meaning
Early and classical Persian uses forms that resemble modern ones but distribute tense, aspect, and mood differently. همی can mark imperfective or durative meaning; prefixless presents and older aorists require syntax-sensitive analysis. Deleting an “old-looking” particle may remove aspect rather than modernize style.
سپاه همی رفت و غبار از راه برمیخاست.
sepâh hami raft-o ghobâr az râh bar-mi-khâst.
The army kept advancing, and dust rose from the road. (constructed classical-style teaching example; همی is durative)
سپاه پیوسته پیش میرفت و از راه غبار برمیخاست.
sepâh peyvaste pish mi-raft va az râh ghobâr bar-mi-khâst.
The army continued to advance, and dust rose from the road. (modern explanatory paraphrase)
The paraphrase preserves durativity with پیوسته and میرفت. Simply changing همی رفت to simple رفت would present one bounded departure.
اگر داور سخن هر دو سوی بشنود، راست از ناراست بداند.
agar dâvar sokhan-e har do suy be-shenavad, râst az nârâst be-dânad.
If the judge hears both sides, the judge will distinguish truth from falsehood. (constructed classical-style teaching example)
An editor must decide whether a form represents historical morphology before replacing it with the most frequent modern parse. See Classical Aorist and Prefixless Presents.
Word Order Is Evidence, Not Debris
Classical prose and especially verse can front objects, delay verbs, separate dependents, and omit recoverable subjects. Modern prose order can clarify the parse, but it must preserve grammatical roles. Adding modern را to the wrong noun or attaching an ezâfe differently creates another proposition.
بدو گفت دبیر که این نامه به مهر شاه استوار است.
be-du goft dabir ke in nâme be mohr-e shâh ostovâr ast.
The secretary said to him that this letter was validated by the king’s seal. (constructed classical-style teaching example)
دبیر به او گفت که مهر شاه این نامه را معتبر میکند.
dabir be u goft ke mohr-e shâh in nâme râ mo'tabar mi-konad.
The secretary told him that the king’s seal validates this letter. (modern interpretive paraphrase)
The second version supplies an active causal relation and specific-object marking. It is useful commentary, not a normalized copy of the first sentence.
Lexical Meaning Can Shift
Familiar forms are especially dangerous because readers import their dominant modern senses. Classical دولت can denote fortune, felicity, dynastic power, or rule; it need not mean a modern state administration. رأی can mean judgment, counsel, or intention rather than an electoral vote. The surrounding genre and collocations decide.
دولت یار بود و کار دشوار آسان گشت.
dowlat yâr bud-o kâr-e doshvâr âsân gasht.
Fortune was favorable, and the difficult task became easy. (constructed classical-style teaching example; دولت means good fortune)
بخت با او یار بود و کار دشوار آسان شد.
bakht bâ u yâr bud va kâr-e doshvâr âsân shod.
Luck was on his or her side, and the difficult task became easy. (modern semantic paraphrase)
Replacing دولت with دولت امروزی “the modern government” would preserve a dictionary headword while destroying the sentence’s sense.
Meter Limits What Can Be Changed inside Verse
A modern prose paraphrase may replace a historical form freely if it records the meaning accurately. A normalized verse text cannot do so silently: synonym substitution, added object markers, and expanded auxiliaries can change syllable weight, rhyme, and rhetorical parallelism. Meter is evidence for reading, not authorization to rewrite the witness.
در متن منظوم، مصحح واژهی کهن را نگه داشت و معنی امروزی را در حاشیه نوشت.
dar matn-e manzum, mosahheh vâzhe-ye kohan râ negah dâsht va ma'ni-ye emruzi râ dar hâshiye nevesht.
In the verse text, the editor retained the old word and put its modern meaning in the margin. (modern academic Persian)
جایگزینی این فعل وزن مصراع را به هم میزند، پس فقط در بازنویسی نثری میآید.
jâygozini-ye in fe'l vazn-e mesrâ' râ be ham mi-zanad, pas faqat dar bâznevisi-ye nasri mi-âyad.
Replacing this verb disrupts the meter, so the replacement appears only in the prose paraphrase. (modern philological statement)
Manuscript Variants Must Not Be Blended
One witness may have an older verb, another a clarifying pronoun, and a third a reordered phrase. Selecting readings independently from all three can create a smooth sentence found in none. A critical edition may adopt an eclectic text, but each choice needs an apparatus and rationale.
نسخهی الف همی رفت دارد، نسخهی ب میرفت و نسخهی ج رفت؛ مصحح خوانش نسخهی الف را برگزید.
noskhe-ye alef hami raft dârad, noskhe-ye be mi-raft va noskhe-ye jim raft; mosahheh khânesh-e noskhe-ye alef râ bar-gozid.
Witness A has همی رفت, B میرفت, and C رفت; the editor adopted the reading of witness A. (constructed apparatus; witnesses are hypothetical)
Common Mistakes
1. Deleting Historical همی without Preserving Aspect
⚠️ کاروان همی رفت را به کاروان رفت بازنویسی کردم و گفتم معنی یکسان است.
kârvân hami raft râ be kârvân raft bâznevisi kardam va goftam ma'ni yeksân ast.
Grammatical Persian, but the analysis is wrong: simple رفت can erase the continuing or habitual force contributed by historical همی.
✅ در بازنویسی نوشتم کاروان پیوسته پیش میرفت و حذف همی را توضیح دادم.
dar bâznevisi neveshtam kârvân peyvaste pish mi-raft va hazf-e hami râ towzih dâdam.
In the paraphrase I wrote that the caravan kept advancing and explained the removal of همی.
2. Giving a Familiar Word Only Its Modern Institutional Sense
⚠️ دولت یار بود یعنی ادارهی دولت از او پشتیبانی کرد.
dowlat yâr bud ya'ni edâre-ye dowlat az u poshtibâni kard.
Grammatical Persian, but an incorrect lexical modernization: in the constructed classical context, دولت denotes fortune, not a government office.
✅ در این بافت، دولت یار بود را بخت با او یار بود معنی میکنیم.
dar in bâft, dowlat yâr bud râ bakht bâ u yâr bud ma'ni mi-konim.
In this context, we interpret دولت یار بود as ‘fortune was on his or her side.’
3. Treating Editorial Punctuation as Authorial Evidence
⚠️ چون چاپ جدید ویرگول دارد، نویسندهی کهن هم حتما همان مرز را نوشته است.
chun châp-e jadid virgul dârad, nevisande-ye kohan ham hatman hamân marz râ neveshte ast.
Grammatical Persian, but the inference is wrong: modern punctuation may record an editor’s parse rather than marks in the manuscript.
✅ ویرگول را مصحح افزوده و در یادداشت دلیل این مرزبندی را توضیح داده است.
virgul râ mosahheh afzude va dar yâddâsht dalil-e in marz-bandi râ towzih dâde ast.
The editor supplied the comma and explained the reason for this segmentation in a note.
4. Silently Combining Manuscript Variants
⚠️ از هر سه نسخه روانترین واژه را برداشتم و متن حاصل را عین نسخه نامیدم.
az har se noskhe ravân-tarin vâzhe râ bardâshtam va matn-e hâsel râ eyn-e noskhe nâmidam.
Grammatical Persian, but an incorrect editorial method: the resulting eclectic text is not identical to any one witness.
✅ صورت برگزیده را در متن آوردم و اختلاف هر نسخه را در حاشیه ثبت کردم.
surat-e bar-gozide râ dar matn âvardam va ekhtelâf-e har noskhe râ dar hâshiye sabt kardam.
I placed the adopted reading in the text and recorded each witness’s variant in the apparatus.
5. Normalizing Unicode Inconsistently
❌ متن كهن را با ي و ك عربی به عنوان فارسی نرمال چاپ کردم.
Incorrect Persian normalization — Arabic ك and ي remain wrong code points in a normalized Iranian Persian layer.
✅ متن کهن را در لایهی نرمال با ک و ی فارسی چاپ کردم و صورت نسخه را جدا نگه داشتم.
matn-e kohan râ dar lâye-ye normâl bâ kâf va ye-ye fârsi châp kardam va surat-e noskhe râ jodâ negah dâshtam.
I printed the old text in the normalized layer with Persian kaf and yeh and preserved the witness form separately.
6. Replacing a Verse Form inside the Quotation
⚠️ فعل کهن را در خود بیت با مترادف امروزی عوض کردم تا خواندنش آسان شود.
fe'l-e kohan râ dar khod-e beyt bâ moterâdef-e emruzi avaz kardam tâ khândan-ash âsân shavad.
I replaced the old verb inside the verse with a modern synonym to make it easier to read. (possible adaptation, but no longer a source quotation)
✅ بیت را بیتغییر نقل کردم و بازنویسی نثری را زیر آن با برچسب روشن آوردم.
beyt râ bi-taghyir naql kardam va bâznevisi-ye nasri râ zir-e ân bâ barchasb-e rowshan âvardam.
I quoted the verse unchanged and placed a clearly labeled prose paraphrase beneath it.
Key Takeaways
- Separate transcription, normalization, annotation, and paraphrase.
