Names, Surnames, and Titles in Iran

An Iranian form normally separates نام “given name” from نام خانوادگی “family name.” Conversation adds another choice: whether to use the given name, the family name, آقا or خانم, a professional title, or no title at all. That choice expresses the relationship and setting; it is not grammatical gender agreement and it cannot be predicted solely from age.

This page gives a practical Iranian map. Individual preference, workplace culture, generation, and degree of familiarity all matter. When someone introduces themselves in a particular way or signs a message with a preferred form, that is stronger evidence than a universal etiquette formula. The structural details of linking titles are developed on Names and Titles with Ezâfe.

The construction map

FormTypical functionRegister and restriction
مریم احمدیfull name: given name + family nameneutral identification; forms and introductions
مریمgiven name alonefriends, family, peers, or invited first-name use
خانم احمدیخانم + ezâfe + family nameneutral respectful reference or address
آقای رضاییآقا + visible -ی + family nameneutral respectful reference or address
دکتر نادریprofessional title + ezâfe + family nameprofessional or institutional setting
مریم‌خانم / علی‌آقاgiven name + postposed honorificfamiliar-respectful, often traditional or warm

The labels نام and نام خانوادگی are important because English “name” can mean the whole string. If a website asks for نام, do not enter the entire full name unless the form says نام و نام خانوادگی. Iranian official and consular interfaces visibly maintain this distinction; for example, Iranian consular guidance labels Persian given-name and surname fields separately.

در قسمت نام، مریم و در قسمت نام خانوادگی، احمدی بنویسید.

dar qesmat-e nâm, Maryam va dar qesmat-e nâm-e khânevâdegi, Ahmadi be-nevisid.

In the given-name field, write Maryam, and in the family-name field, write Ahmadi. (form instruction)

نام و نام خانوادگی‌تان را پایین صفحه بنویسید و امضا کنید.

nâm-o nâm-e khânevâdegi-tân râ pâin-e safhe be-nevisid va emzâ konid.

Write your given and family name at the bottom of the page and sign. (formal instruction)

Respectful default: title plus family name

With an unfamiliar adult in a neutral Iranian setting, آقای + family name or خانم + family name is a useful respectful default. آقا ends in a vowel, so its ezâfe is written: آقای رضایی. The linker after خانم is normally heard but not shown in unpointed writing: خانم احمدی is khânom-e Ahmadi.

آقای نادری، نوبت شما رسیده است.

âghâ-ye Nâderi, nobat-e shomâ reside ast.

Mr Naderi, it is your turn. (respectful service encounter)

خانم کریمی امروز جلسه را اداره می‌کنند.

khânom-e Karimi emruz jalase râ edâre mi-konand.

Ms Karimi is chairing the meeting today. (respectful reference)

The plural verb in the second example is honorific agreement with one person. Singular agreement is also grammatical in neutral narration. Do not treat plural agreement as a fact about the person's number; it is a register choice. The respectful pronoun system is explained on Polite شما, ایشان, and Honorific Agreement.

خانم کریمی امروز جلسه را اداره می‌کند.

khânom-e Karimi emruz jalase râ edâre mi-konad.

Ms Karimi is chairing the meeting today. (neutral narration with singular agreement)

💡
A title phrase is one noun phrase. Place را after the complete sequence: خانم کریمی را دیدم, never between خانم and کریمی.

Professional titles

دکتر and مهندس can function as professional titles before a name. In careful connected Iranian Persian, they normally link to the name with ezâfe: دکترِ نادری, مهندسِ فرهمند. Public announcements, roll calls, signs, and some speakers may use a clipped version without the linker. Both occur, but careful linked delivery is the reliable teaching baseline.

دکتر فرهمند بعد از ظهر در مطب هستند.

doktor-e Farahmand ba'd az zohr dar matab hastand.

Dr Farahmand is at the clinic in the afternoon. (respectful, careful connected speech)

مهندس امینی نقشه‌ی تازه را برای گروه توضیح داد.

mohandes-e Amini naghshe-ye tâze râ barâ-ye goruh towzih dâd.

Engineer Amini explained the new plan to the group. (professional setting)

In Iran, دکتر may be socially salient as a title, but do not assign it to someone merely because English uses “Dr” broadly or because you want to sound extra polite. Use the title the person or institution uses. مهندس likewise appears as an occupational or courteous workplace title in some environments, not as a compulsory address for every engineering graduate.

روی کارت نوشته بود دکتر سارا مبینی، پس همان عنوان را به کار بردم.

ru-ye kârt neveshte bud doktor-e Sârâ Mobini, pas hamân onvân râ be kâr bordam.

The card said Dr Sara Mobini, so I used that title. (preference based on supplied evidence)

Given names and familiar honorifics

Given names alone are normal among friends, relatives, and many peers. Moving immediately to a given name in a hierarchical or first-time interaction can nevertheless sound presumptuous. Listen for an invitation such as من را مریم صدا کنید or mirror the person's self-presentation.

من مریم هستم؛ لطفا من را مریم صدا کنید.

man Maryam hastam; lotfan man râ Maryam sedâ konid.

I'm Maryam; please call me Maryam. (friendly explicit preference)

هنوز با هم صمیمی نشده‌ایم، برای همین او را خانم شریفی صدا کردم.

hanuz bâ ham samimi na-shode-im, barâ-ye hamin u râ khânom-e Sharifi sedâ kardam.

We are not close yet, so I addressed her as Ms Sharifi. (social explanation)

Postposed آقا and خانم produce forms such as علی‌آقا and مریم‌خانم (familiar-respectful/traditional). They can convey warmth together with respect. They are conventional combinations, not a productive command to reverse any surname title: neutral Mr Rezayi remains آقای رضایی, not رضایی‌آقا.

مریم‌خانم، اگر چای می‌خواهید بفرمایید.

Maryam-khânom, agar chây mi-khâhid be-farmâyid.

Maryam khanom, please help yourself if you would like tea. (warm and respectful)

علی‌آقا گفتند عصر دوباره سر می‌زنند.

Ali-âghâ goftand asr do-bâre sar mi-zanand.

Ali agha said he would drop by again this evening. (familiar-respectful)

Introductions and information structure

In self-introduction, Persian commonly uses من + name + هستم or simply name + هستم. The full name is useful when identification matters; the given name alone invites a more familiar footing. English speakers often say a literal اسم من ... است every time. It is grammatical, but repeated in live introductions it can sound like a classroom formula rather than the most economical choice.

سلام، نیلوفر احمدی هستم، از بخش آموزش.

salâm, Nilufar-e Ahmadi hastam, az bakhsh-e âmuzesh.

Hello, I'm Niloufar Ahmadi, from the training department. (professional self-introduction)

ببخشید، شما آقای رستگار هستید؟

bebakhshid, shomâ âghâ-ye Rastegâr hastid?

Excuse me, are you Mr Rastegar? (respectful identification)

بله، خودم هستم؛ شما باید خانم آذری باشید.

bale, khod-am hastam; shomâ bâyad khânom-e Âzari bâshid.

Yes, that's me; you must be Ms Azari. (short exchange)

💡
Choose the smallest form that identifies the person while fitting the relationship: given name among intimates, title plus family name as a respectful default, and full name when disambiguation or records matter.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the whole name in the نام field

⚠️ در فرم، مریم احمدی را فقط در قسمت نام می‌نویسم.

dar form, Maryam-e Ahmadi râ faqat dar qesmat-e nâm mi-nevisam.

On the form, I put Maryam Ahmadi only in the given-name field. (wrong field mapping)

✅ مریم را در قسمت نام و احمدی را در قسمت نام خانوادگی می‌نویسم.

Maryam râ dar qesmat-e nâm va Ahmadi râ dar qesmat-e nâm-e khânevâdegi mi-nevisam.

I put Maryam in the given-name field and Ahmadi in the family-name field.

2. Omitting the visible linker after آقا

❌ آقا رضایی لطفا وارد شوید.

Incorrect as the neutral title-name construction — آقا requires visible -ی before the family name.

✅ آقای رضایی، لطفا وارد شوید.

âghâ-ye Rezâyi, lotfan vâred shavid.

Mr Rezayi, please come in.

3. Inserting را inside the name phrase

❌ خانم را کریمی در راهرو دیدم.

Incorrect — را cannot split the title from the family name.

✅ خانم کریمی را کنار آسانسور دیدم.

khânom-e Karimi râ kenâr-e âsânsur didam.

I saw Ms Karimi by the elevator.

4. Translating every English Dr as دکتر without checking preference

⚠️ چون مدرک او را نمی‌دانم، برای احترام حتما دکتر صدایش می‌کنم.

chon madrak-e u râ nemi-dânam, barâ-ye ehterâm hatman doktor sedâ-yash mi-konam.

Since I do not know their degree, I will definitely call them Doctor to be respectful. (unsafe assumption)

✅ از عنوانی استفاده می‌کنم که خود شخص یا محل کارش به کار می‌برد.

az onvâni estefâde mi-konam ke khod-e shakhs yâ mahall-e kâr-ash be kâr mi-barad.

I use the title that the person or their workplace uses.

5. Reversing every title after the name

❌ رضایی‌آقا پرونده را آورد.

Incorrect for neutral ‘Mr Rezayi’ by mechanical analogy with familiar علی‌آقا.

✅ آقای رضایی پرونده‌ی بیمه را آورد.

âghâ-ye Rezâyi parvande-ye bime râ âvard.

Mr Rezayi brought the insurance file.

Names are socially negotiated grammatical phrases. Keep the official field distinction clear, keep title and name together as one ezâfe-linked unit, and let the person's own usage guide your level of formality.

Key Takeaways

  • نام is the given-name field; نام خانوادگی is the family-name field.
  • آقای/خانم + family name is a useful respectful default, while given-name use depends on relationship and preference.
  • A title-name sequence forms one ezâfe-linked noun phrase, so را follows the entire sequence.
  • Professional and familiar titles are usage choices, not grammatical gender marking.
