Unless and Otherwise: مگر اینکه and وگرنه

Persian مگر اینکه means “unless / except if”: it introduces the condition that can overturn an otherwise valid conclusion. وگرنه means “otherwise / or else”: it introduces the result that follows if a preceding requirement is not met. Compare نمی‌آیم مگر اینکه دعوتم کنند “I won’t come unless they invite me” with دعوت‌نامه را بفرست، وگرنه نمی‌آیم “send the invitation, otherwise I won’t come.”

Two directions of reasoning

ConnectorLogical shapeWhat its clause expressesNeutral position
مگر اینکهdefault conclusion + exceptionthe one condition that cancels the defaultafter the main clause
وگرنهrequirement + alternative resultwhat happens if the requirement failsbefore the result clause

emshab birun nemi-ravam magar in-ke kâr-e zaruri pish biyâyad.

I’m not going out tonight unless something urgent comes up. (neutral standard; exception to a negative default)

hamin hâlâ fâyl râ zakhire kon, vagarna taghyirât-at az beyn mi-ravad.

Save the file right now, otherwise your changes will be lost. (neutral warning)

In the first, not going is expected; an emergency is the exception. In the second, saving is presented as the requirement; loss is the alternative consequence.

مگر اینکه: an exception to a default

The main clause usually contains a negative, restrictive, or universal claim: نمی‌روم “I won’t go,” ممکن نیست “it is impossible,” همه می‌توانند “everyone may.” The مگر اینکه clause carves out a case in which that claim no longer holds.

hich-kas vâred-e âzmâyeshgâh nemi-shavad magar in-ke kârt-e dastresi dâshte bâshad.

No one enters the laboratory unless they have an access card. (formal rule; exception condition)

mi-tavâni khodro râ be-bari, magar in-ke khâhar-at be ân niyâz dâshte bâshad.

You can take the car, unless your sister needs it. (neutral; exception to permission)

The default need not itself be negative. In the second sentence permission is the default, and the sister’s need blocks it. What matters is exception structure, not a visible negative prefix.

Open future exceptions commonly use the subjunctive: پیش بیاید، داشته باشد، باران بگیرد. This resembles provisions with به شرطی که, but the discourse direction differs. به شرطی که X makes X a negotiated requirement; مگر اینکه X first establishes a default and then exempts X.

💡
Negate the exception mentally: P مگر اینکه Q normally means “P if Q does not hold.” This test reveals the negative entailment even when the main clause is affirmative.
💡
Choose the connector by discourse direction: مگر اینکه looks ahead to the sole escape from a default; وگرنه looks back to a requirement and announces the consequence of failing it.

Mood and established exceptions

Subjunctive is normal for an open, prospective exception. Indicative forms occur when the clause describes an established habit or a fact presented as real rather than merely possible.

rezerv laghv nemi-shavad magar in-ke mehmân tâ zohr khabar be-dahad.

The reservation will not be canceled unless the guest notifies us by noon. (formal-neutral; prospective subjunctive)

ân zamân kasi vâred-e bâyegâni nemi-shod magar in-ke modir ejâze mi-dâd.

At that time no one entered the archive unless the director gave permission. (neutral narrative; established habitual arrangement)

There is no rule that مگر اینکه blindly demands one mood. The speaker’s view of the condition—open possibility versus recurring fact—matters. Still, learners will use the subjunctive in most forward-looking instructions and plans.

وگرنه: the alternative consequence

وگرنه points backward to an explicit or easily inferred requirement. Its literal logic is “and if not that.” The following clause says what will, would, or did happen in the alternative scenario.

resid râ negah dârid, vagarna pul-etân râ pas be-dahim.

Keep the receipt; otherwise we cannot refund your money. (polite/formal instruction)

kami ajale kon, vagarna otobus râ az dast mi-dahim.

Hurry a little, or else we’ll miss the bus. (neutral conversation)

khoshbakhtâne tâksi gereftim, vagarna be parvâz nemi-residim.

Fortunately we took a taxi; otherwise we would not have made the flight. (neutral narrative; counterfactual alternative)

The tense of the result depends on time and reality. می‌دهیم predicts a real future risk. نمی‌رسیدیم describes a past counterfactual: the taxi was taken, so the missed-flight scenario did not occur.

Clause order and punctuation

مگر اینکه most naturally follows the default claim. Fronting is possible—مگر اینکه باران بگیرد، برنامه عوض نمی‌شود—but it makes the exception the discourse frame and is more marked.

وگرنه normally stands between the requirement and its consequence. In planned writing, use a Persian comma or semicolon before it. A semicolon is helpful when both sides are long independent clauses.

form bâyad tâ pâyân-e emruz emzâ shavad; vagarna darkhâst dar in dowre barrasi na-khâhad shod.

The form must be signed by the end of today; otherwise the application will not be reviewed in this round. (formal administrative)

Do not write a comma after مگر inside مگر اینکه. It is one clause-linking expression, even though its two words remain separated.

Not the question particle مگر

Question-initial مگر marks expectation or challenge: مگر نگفتم؟ “Didn’t I tell you?” By contrast, conditional مگر اینکه requires an exception clause. The presence of اینکه and a preceding default are reliable clues.

— miyây kuh? — âre, magar in-ke fardâ sobh bârun begire.

— Are you coming hiking? — Yes, unless it rains tomorrow morning. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

Incorrect — choose neutral اگر or an exception frame with مگر اینکه; do not stack them.

agar havâ khub bâshad, asr be pârk mi-ravim.

If the weather is good, we’ll go to the park this afternoon.

2. Using indicative می‌ in an open exception

qarârdâd avaz nemi-shavad magar in-ke har do taraf movâfeqat mi-konand.

Possible as a habitual description of what the parties regularly do, but not the intended single open future exception; use subjunctive موافقت کنند for that reading.

qarârdâd avaz nemi-shavad magar in-ke har do taraf movâfeqat konand.

The contract will not change unless both parties agree.

3. Using وگرنه to introduce the requirement

Incorrect — وگرنه introduces the consequence of not meeting a preceding requirement.

belit râ ânlâyn be-khar, vagarna bâyad dar saff be-mâni.

Buy the ticket online; otherwise you’ll have to wait in line.

4. Confusing the exception connector with rhetorical

Incorrect blend — an exception clause requires مگر اینکه; a question مگر has different syntax.

nemi-ravam magar in-ke to ham biyâyi.

I won’t go unless you come too.

Key Takeaways

  • مگر اینکه introduces the condition that overturns a default conclusion.
  • وگرنه introduces what follows if a preceding requirement is not met.
  • Open future exceptions commonly take the subjunctive; established habitual exceptions may use the indicative.
  • وگرنه supports real future consequences and counterfactual past alternatives.
  • Punctuation separates full clauses, but مگر اینکه remains an uninterrupted connector.
