Scientific Esperanto aims at explicit relations: what a term denotes, which process causes which result, and where a generalization stops applying. The original B2-level explanation below uses photosynthesis to demonstrate definition clauses, technical compounds, process-oriented voice, and limited claims. The science is introductory; the linguistic analysis is advanced.
The complete explanation
The passage progresses from a definition to location, mechanism, correction of a simplified slogan, and finally a limiting condition. That order mirrors scientific reasoning: establish the object, describe the process, then state the boundary of the model.
Sentence 1: define through a relational process
Fotosintezo estas la procezo, per kiu plantoj, algoj kaj kelkaj bakterioj transformas lumenergion en kemian energion.
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria transform light energy into chemical energy.
The pattern X estas la procezo, per kiu ... does more than equate two labels. The relative phrase per kiu states the mechanism or means that makes the definition informative. Kiu refers to singular procezo; per already marks its role, so no -n appears.
The coordinated subject plantoj, algoj kaj kelkaj bakterioj is plural, but Esperanto verbs do not agree for number: transformas has the same form with one subject or several. Lumenergion is the direct object and en kemian energion names the result of transformation. The directional/resultative -n on kemian energion marks a change into a new state.
Kondensado estas la procezo, per kiu gaso transformiĝas en likvaĵon.
Condensation is the process by which a gas turns into a liquid.
This fresh imitation preserves the definitional frame but uses intransitive transformiĝas, so there is no direct object.
Transparent compounds and their heads
Foto-sintez-o is an established international technical root rather than a freely assembled everyday compound. By contrast, lum-energi-o, karbon-dioksid-o, krom-produkt-o, energi-riĉ-a, lum-intens-o, and akvo-dispon-ebl-o expose their internal relations more clearly. The last element normally supplies the grammatical head: lumenergio is a kind of energy, kromprodukto a kind of product, and akvodisponeblo a kind of availability.
English can stack several nouns before a head and leave their relation implicit. Esperanto compounds are compact too, but clarity outranks compression. Use a phrase when readers might misparse the relation: la koncentriĝo de karbondioksido is clearer than an overpacked coinage. Hyphens can be used pedagogically or to avert ambiguity, but the conventional forms in the passage are written solid.
La sunlumo liveras energion al la ekosistemo.
Sunlight supplies energy to the ecosystem.
La akvodisponeblo limigas la kreskon de plantoj dum sekeco.
Water availability limits plant growth during a drought.
Sentence 2: establish location before mechanism
En la ĉeloj de plantoj, klorofilo sorbas parton de la videbla lumo.
In plant cells, chlorophyll absorbs part of the visible light.
The initial en phrase sets the domain before new information arrives. Scientific prose often uses such a frame because it prevents a statement from sounding universal. Parton de la videbla lumo contains a direct object parton followed by a de phrase that specifies the whole from which the part is taken.
Klorofilo is singular and uncounted here because it names the substance generically. Esperanto normally uses no article for a substance in generic reference. English likewise omits the in “chlorophyll,” but English speakers sometimes add la because the surrounding phrase contains the visible light. The two noun phrases have different reference structures.
En la supra tavolo de la lago, algoj ricevas sufiĉe da lumo.
In the upper layer of the lake, algae receive enough light.
Sentence 3: process-oriented voice
Per tiu energio, akvo kaj karbondioksido estas uzataj por produkti sukerojn, dum oksigeno liberiĝas kiel kromprodukto.
Using that energy, water and carbon dioxide are used to produce sugars, while oxygen is released as a by-product.
The passive estas uzataj backgrounds any human-like agent and foregrounds the materials. The participle agrees with the coordinated plural subject akvo kaj karbondioksido. Por produkti expresses purpose or function. The dum clause introduces a simultaneous process, and liberiĝas presents oxygen as becoming free without naming an external releaser.
Scientific writing does not require a passive in every sentence. The active first sentence is clearer because the biological agents matter. The passive becomes useful here because the process and inputs matter more than an agent. Excessive passive chains can obscure causal structure even in formal prose.
Dum la solvaĵo malvarmiĝas, kristaloj formiĝas ĉe la fundo de la ujo.
As the solution cools, crystals form at the bottom of the container.
This imitation uses two -iĝ- verbs to describe changes of state without inventing agents.
Sentence 4: attribute a simplification, then correct it
Oni ofte diras, ke plantoj ‘produktas oksigenon’, sed tiu priskribo estas nekompleta.
It is often said that plants ‘produce oxygen,’ but that description is incomplete.
Oni gives the statement an unspecified human source: people commonly say this. It is more idiomatic than copying English impersonal it as ĝi. The quotation marks signal a familiar simplified formulation rather than a verbatim source. Tiu priskribo then turns the quoted proposition into a singular noun referent that can be evaluated.
La procezo samtempe konstruas energiriĉajn molekulojn.
At the same time, the process constructs energy-rich molecules.
After the colon, this clause explains exactly why the description is incomplete. Samtempe prevents a false either–or reading: oxygen release and molecule construction are linked aspects of the process. Energi-riĉ-a illustrates a productive relation “rich in energy”; in normal running text energiriĉa is compact and unambiguous.
Oni ofte nomas la cerbon komputilo, sed tiu komparo klarigas nur kelkajn funkciojn.
The brain is often called a computer, but that comparison explains only some functions.
This imitation attributes a common analogy and limits its explanatory force.
Sentence 5: state a condition and its limiting factors
Se la lumintenso kreskas, la rapideco de fotosintezo ne kreskas senlime.
If light intensity increases, the rate of photosynthesis does not increase without limit.
The repeated root kresk- makes the tested relationship explicit, while ne ... senlime blocks the mistaken inference that more light always produces proportionally more photosynthesis. Scientific style often prefers such a bounded claim to a rhetorically stronger but false absolute.
Ĉar temperaturo, akvodisponeblo kaj la koncentriĝo de karbondioksido ankaŭ povas limigi ĝin.
Because temperature, water availability, and carbon-dioxide concentration can also limit it.
The ĉar clause supplies the causal explanation. Ankaŭ adds these factors to light intensity rather than presenting a new unrelated list. Ĝin refers to singular la rapideco, not to fotosintezo; the nearby feminine/masculine distinction available in some languages does not exist, so reference must be secured through meaning and placement.
Se la temperaturo plialtiĝas, la reakcio rapidiĝas nur ĝis aliaj faktoroj komencas limigi ĝin.
If the temperature rises, the reaction speeds up only until other factors begin to limit it.
Register and disciplinary responsibility
This is technical and scientific explanatory prose, but it is not a research report. It defines terms and qualifies a general relation without pretending to present new data. A research article would specify experimental conditions, measurements, and sources. The transparent morphology makes new terms learnable, yet convention still matters: experts normally use established terms rather than recombining roots differently in every paper.
The text also avoids personifying plants as deliberate engineers. Active plantoj ... transformas is grammatical and scientifically useful, while por produkti describes the process's functional result, not a conscious intention. Context, not the infinitive alone, distinguishes biological function from human purpose.
See technical and scientific writing for document-level style and compound head order for interpreting unfamiliar terms.
Key Takeaways
- A useful definition states both the category and the relation that makes the term distinctive.
- Read transparent compounds from their final head, but prefer a phrase when compression would create ambiguity.
- Choose active, passive, -iĝ-, or oni according to which participant and source of responsibility the explanation needs to foreground.
Common Mistakes
Copying English impersonal “it” as ĝi
❌ Ĝi estas ofte dirita, ke plantoj bezonas lumon.
Incorrect—ĝi has no referent and the passive calques English.
✅ Oni ofte diras, ke plantoj bezonas lumon.
It is often said that plants need light.
Reversing the head of a compound
Energilumo estas sorbata de klorofilo.
A possible compound, but its final head makes it a kind of light, not ‘light energy.’
✅ Lumenergio estas sorbata de klorofilo.
Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll.
Forgetting agreement in a scientific passive
❌ Akvo kaj karbondioksido estas uzata en la procezo.
Incorrect—the participle must agree with the plural subject.
✅ Akvo kaj karbondioksido estas uzataj en la procezo.
Water and carbon dioxide are used in the process.
Using de kiu for an instrumental definition
❌ Fotosintezo estas la procezo, de kiu plantoj transformas lumenergion.
Incorrect—de marks source or possession, not the means intended here.
✅ Fotosintezo estas la procezo, per kiu plantoj transformas lumenergion.
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants transform light energy.
Overstating a conditional relation
Ju pli da lumo, des pli da fotosintezo sen ia limo.
Grammatical, but scientifically misleading: the relation stops being proportional when another factor limits the process.
✅ Pli intensa lumo povas rapidigi fotosintezon ĝis alia faktoro fariĝas limiga.
More intense light can speed photosynthesis until another factor becomes limiting.
