An opinion column must do more than announce what its author believes. It has to recognize an objection, keep several referents distinct, and lead the reader from shared evidence to a defensible conclusion. The original B2-level column below argues about car-free city centers and illustrates the devices that make that progression explicit in Esperanto.
The text is deliberately international: it does not assume that one city's policy applies everywhere. Its recommendations are framed as a position, while claims presented as evidence are attributed more cautiously.
The complete column
Multaj urboj planas limigi privatajn aŭtojn en siaj centroj. La propono havas evidentajn avantaĝojn: pli puran aeron, malpli da bruo kaj pli sekurajn stratojn. Tamen ĝi sukcesos nur se la urboj samtempe plibonigos publikan transporton kaj sekurajn vojojn por biciklantoj. Kvankam iuj butikistoj timas, ke klientoj foriros, spertoj el diversaj lokoj montras, ke piedirantoj ofte restas pli longe kaj vizitas pli da vendejoj. Tio ne signifas, ke ĉiu aŭto devas tuj malaperi; liveroj, krizservoj kaj homoj kun moviĝmalfacilaĵoj bezonas zorge planitajn esceptojn. Laŭ mi, la vera elekto do ne estas inter ŝanĝo kaj nenia ŝanĝo, sed inter ŝanĝo juste planita kaj ŝanĝo prokrastata ĝis la kostoj fariĝos pli grandaj.
The column moves through six functions: topic, benefits, condition, objection plus evidence, qualification, and conclusion. That architecture matters as much as any individual connector.
Sentence 1: introduce a topic without claiming universality
Multaj urboj planas limigi privatajn aŭtojn en siaj centroj.
Many cities are planning to limit private cars in their centers.
Multaj, not ĉiuj, gives the claim an appropriate evidential scale. Planas limigi is a control structure: the cities both do the planning and would carry out the limiting, so the infinitive needs no separate subject. Privatajn aŭtojn receives plural -j and object -n on both adjective and noun.
The possessive siaj refers back to the subject multaj urboj: each city is considering its own center. Iliaj centroj could refer to centers belonging to some previously mentioned third party, while la urbocentroj would avoid the reference relation altogether.
Pluraj universitatoj planas redukti energikonsumon en siaj konstruaĵoj.
Several universities plan to reduce energy consumption in their buildings.
This imitation preserves the subject-controlled infinitive and reflexive possessive.
Sentence 2: turn a proposal into the continuing topic
La propono havas evidentajn avantaĝojn: pli puran aeron, malpli da bruo kaj pli sekurajn stratojn.
The proposal has clear advantages: cleaner air, less noise, and safer streets.
La propono packages the whole first sentence into a definite noun phrase. This is the start of a reference chain: an action is introduced, named as a proposal, and then continued as ĝi in the next sentence. Repeating la propono once is clearer than using a pronoun before the topic has a stable label.
After the colon, three phrases explain avantaĝojn. Pli puran aeron and pli sekurajn stratojn behave as objects understood with havas, so they carry -n. Malpli da bruo uses a quantity expression with da; the noun after da takes no accusative ending.
La reformo promesas tri rezultojn: pli rapidan servon, malpli da paperaĵoj kaj pli klarajn regulojn.
The reform promises three results: faster service, less paperwork, and clearer rules.
Sentence 3: concede benefits, then state a condition
Tamen ĝi sukcesos nur se la urboj samtempe plibonigos publikan transporton kaj sekurajn vojojn por biciklantoj.
However, it will succeed only if the cities simultaneously improve public transport and safe routes for cyclists.
Tamen does not erase the benefits; it redirects the argument toward a necessary condition. Ĝi now has one accessible singular antecedent, la propono. The focus particle nur scopes over the se clause: success is restricted to cases in which the supporting infrastructure improves.
Both clauses use -os because the writer presents the implementation and its condition as future possibilities. Esperanto does not automatically replace the future in a se clause with a present tense as English often does. The two coordinated objects, publikan transporton and sekurajn vojojn, both require -n.
La nova sistemo estos utila nur se ĉiuj uzantoj ricevos klarajn instrukciojn.
The new system will be useful only if all users receive clear instructions.
Sentence 4: acknowledge an objection without surrendering the claim
Kvankam iuj butikistoj timas, ke klientoj foriros, spertoj el diversaj lokoj montras, ke piedirantoj ofte restas pli longe kaj vizitas pli da vendejoj.
Although some shopkeepers fear that customers will leave, experience from various places shows that pedestrians often stay longer and visit more shops.
The kvankam clause grants that a fear exists; it does not certify that the feared result will occur. Iuj butikistoj again limits the claim responsibly. The main clause then changes the evidential basis from fear to spertoj el diversaj lokoj.
Two ke clauses have different sponsors. Shopkeepers are responsible for klientoj foriros; accumulated experience supports piedirantoj ... restas ... kaj vizitas. Keeping those sources grammatically visible prevents the columnist's own voice from swallowing every proposition.
Pli longe is adverbial because it measures how long pedestrians remain. Pli da vendejoj is a quantity phrase and serves as the object of vizitas without adding -n after da.
Kvankam kelkaj gepatroj dubas, ke la ŝanĝo helpos, rezultoj de la provo montras, ke lernantoj partoprenas pli aktive.
Although some parents doubt that the change will help, results from the trial show that students participate more actively.
Sentence 5: use tio for a whole preceding claim
Tio ne signifas, ke ĉiu aŭto devas tuj malaperi; liveroj, krizservoj kaj homoj kun moviĝmalfacilaĵoj bezonas zorge planitajn esceptojn.
That does not mean that every car must disappear immediately; deliveries, emergency services, and people with mobility difficulties need carefully planned exceptions.
Tio refers to the preceding argument as a proposition. Ĝi would more naturally continue a particular singular entity such as la propono. This distinction makes reference chains precise: la propono → ĝi tracks the policy; the evidence just given → tio turns an entire statement into the subject of ne signifas.
The semicolon balances a rejected overgeneralization against the reason for rejecting it. Zorge modifies the participle planitajn, while planitajn esceptojn agrees in plural and accusative. Movo-iĝ-mal-facil-aĵ-o is a transparent derivation meaning a difficulty in moving; homoj kun moviĝmalfacilaĵoj is respectful, descriptive language rather than a label that reduces people to a condition.
Tio ne signifas, ke la regulo nepre validu en ĉiu situacio; krizaj okazoj postulas flekseblecon.
That does not mean that the rule must necessarily apply in every situation; emergencies require flexibility.
Sentence 6: mark stance and sharpen the choice
Laŭ mi, la vera elekto do ne estas inter ŝanĝo kaj nenia ŝanĝo, sed inter ŝanĝo juste planita kaj ŝanĝo prokrastata ĝis la kostoj fariĝos pli grandaj.
In my view, the real choice, therefore, is not between change and no change, but between fairly planned change and change postponed until the costs become greater.
Laŭ mi explicitly marks the conclusion as the columnist's assessment. Do signals that it is inferred from the preceding discussion. The frame ne ... sed ... rejects one formulation and substitutes another. Repetition of inter makes the parallel structure unmistakable.
The postposed participles juste planita and prokrastata distinguish two versions of ŝanĝo. The first presents a completed quality of planning; the second presents postponement as an ongoing policy. Ĝis la kostoj fariĝos uses future -os because the cost increase is projected after the present act of postponement.
Laŭ mi, la demando do ne estas, ĉu ni agos, sed ĉu ni agos sufiĉe frue.
In my view, the question is therefore not whether we will act, but whether we will act early enough.
Register and cultural scope
The passage is journalistic rather than academic: it summarizes “experience from various places” without citing a dataset, then openly states laŭ mi. An academic paper would need named sources and more cautious quantification. A casual conversation might replace the formal reference chain with shorter turns and contextual gestures.
Nothing in the grammar requires the reader to share one model of urban life. Homoj kun moviĝmalfacilaĵoj, liveroj, and krizservoj deliberately widen the frame beyond able-bodied pedestrians. That qualification is part of the argument's meaning, not an ornamental aside.
The dedicated pages on concession clauses and stance and evidential responsibility develop the two main discourse tools used here.
Key Takeaways
- Build an argument as a sequence of functions: topic, evidence, concession, qualification, and conclusion.
- Use ĝi to continue a singular noun referent and tio to package a preceding proposition.
- Keep fear, evidence, and authorial judgment attached to their respective sources.
Common Mistakes
Combining English “although ... but” mechanically
❌ Kvankam la ideo estas bona, sed ĝi bezonas pli bonan planon.
Incorrect in careful prose—kvankam already marks concession, so sed is an unnecessary competing linker.
✅ Kvankam la ideo estas bona, ĝi bezonas pli bonan planon.
Although the idea is good, it needs a better plan.
Kvankam ..., tamen ... is possible when the resumed contrast needs emphasis; unplanned kvankam ... sed is the common English-transfer problem.
Using ĝi for an entire proposition
❌ Piedirantoj restas pli longe. Ĝi ne signifas, ke ĉiuj butikoj prosperos.
Incorrect—ĝi lacks a singular noun antecedent for the whole preceding claim.
✅ Piedirantoj restas pli longe. Tio ne signifas, ke ĉiuj butikoj prosperos.
Pedestrians stay longer. That does not mean every shop will prosper.
Losing agreement in an object list
❌ La plano kreos pli sekuraj stratoj kaj pli pura aero.
Incorrect—the listed results are direct objects and require agreement plus -n.
✅ La plano kreos pli sekurajn stratojn kaj pli puran aeron.
The plan will create safer streets and cleaner air.
Presenting opinion as unattributed fact
Evidente la sola ĝusta solvo estas malpermesi ĉiujn aŭtojn.
Grammatical, but poor opinion-column practice: the unsupported absolute hides the writer's responsibility and ignores exceptions.
✅ Laŭ mi, limigo estas prava nur se oni planas justajn esceptojn.
In my view, a restriction is justified only if fair exceptions are planned.
