Apologizing and Repairing

Apology and conversational repair both respond to trouble, but not the same trouble. An apology addresses a social offense or harmful consequence; repair fixes speaking, hearing, reference, or understanding. Pardonu, mi bedaŭras, mi pardonpetas, and mi volis diri therefore overlap in conversation without being interchangeable translations of English sorry.

The foundational grammar determines forms such as the volitive pardonu, pro + noun, and ke + indicative clause. It does not prescribe one universal ritual for sincerity. Contemporary usage and interactional context determine how much responsibility, explanation, and remedy a situation calls for.

The everyday lexical frames are catalogued in Apologies and Repairs. This page goes further into responsibility, sequencing, audience, and the difference between linguistic and social repair.

Identify the trouble before choosing the formula

Use pardonu to ask pardon, excuse an intrusion, or mark a minor breach. The understood object may be the speaker, the interruption, or the act named afterward.

Excuse me, are you waiting for this bus or number twelve?

Sorry about the noise last night; we did not notice how late it had become.

Use mi bedaŭras to express regret or sympathy. It does not necessarily claim that the speaker caused the event.

Mi bedaŭras aŭdi, ke via vojaĝo estis nuligita lastmomente.

I am sorry to hear that your trip was cancelled at the last moment.

Minimal contrast:

Pardonu, ke mi perdis vian libron.

Forgive me for losing your book. (I caused the problem and address you.)

Mi bedaŭras, ke via libro perdiĝis dum la translokiĝo.

I am sorry that your book was lost during the move. (I express regret; responsibility is not specified.)

The contrast is one of speech-act force, not of formality. Either expression can occur in conversation or writing.

Scale an apology to the offense

A minor bump, late reply, or interruption usually needs a prompt pardonu and correction. A serious breach needs more than a stronger adverb. Effective apologies commonly contain some of these moves:

  1. name the act;
  2. accept appropriate responsibility;
  3. recognize the consequence;
  4. offer repair;
  5. explain prevention without turning explanation into an excuse.

Mi sincere pardonpetas pro tio, ke mi publikigis la foton sen via konsento. Mi jam forigis ĝin, kaj estonte mi petos permeson antaŭ ĉiu publika uzo.

I sincerely apologize for publishing the photo without your consent. I have already removed it, and in future I will ask permission before any public use.

The concrete repair makes sincere credible. Repeating tre, vere, profunde while leaving the photo online would intensify wording but not redress the harm.

I am responsible for the incorrect calculation. It delayed the refund by three days, and today I will send the corrected amount.

An explanation belongs after acknowledgment: Mi eraris, ĉar mi uzis malnovan tabelon. Beginning with the circumstance can sound like an attempt to shift responsibility.

💡
For a serious offense, strengthen the remedy before strengthening the adjective. A named corrective action carries more pragmatic weight than another occurrence of tre.

Avoid the conditional non-apology

When the harmful act or effect is established, ke presents it as a fact: Mi bedaŭras, ke mi interrompis vin. Se makes it conditional: Mi bedaŭras, se mi interrompis vin is appropriate only when the speaker genuinely does not know whether an interruption occurred.

I am sorry that my remark hurt you. It was thoughtless, and I will not repeat it.

Contrast that with a genuinely open condition:

Se la muziko ĝenas vin, mi tuj mallaŭtigos ĝin.

If the music is bothering you, I will turn it down immediately.

The second speaker has not been told that harm occurred. Once the neighbor has complained, replacing se with an acknowledgment is more responsible.

Do not use a passive merely to erase the actor: Eraroj estis faritaj reports that errors occurred but avoids who made them. In institutional communication (formal), name the organization and remedy when responsibility is known.

Repair your own wording locally

Self-initiated repair is easiest to follow when it occurs immediately after the problem. Use pardonu, mi volis diri … for a slip, pli ĝuste … for precision, and alivorte … for a new formulation of the same idea.

The interview will begin at ten—sorry, I meant eleven.

La rezulto estis malbona; pli ĝuste, ĝi estis tro necerta por subteni nian konkludon.

The result was bad; more precisely, it was too uncertain to support our conclusion.

Ni ne nuligas la projekton. Alivorte, ni paŭzigas ĝin ĝis ni trovos plian financadon.

We are not cancelling the project. In other words, we are pausing it until we find additional funding.

These markers perform different repairs. Mi volis diri replaces unintended wording; pli ĝuste narrows it; alivorte reformulates it. A correction connector is not decoration—the replacement must preserve or explicitly revise the relevant meaning.

Invite repair when you are the listener

Other-initiated repair should identify the source of trouble and the remedy needed. A bare Kio? can work (informal), but it may sound abrupt and leaves the problem vague. Ask for repetition, definition, reference, or confirmation.

Pardonu, ĉu vi diris ‘dek tri’ aŭ ‘tridek’? La sono momente interrompiĝis.

Sorry, did you say ‘thirteen’ or ‘thirty’? The sound cut out for a moment.

Kiam vi diras ‘la antaŭa versio’, ĉu vi celas la dosieron senditan lunde?

When you say ‘the previous version,’ do you mean the file sent on Monday?

I am not sure whether I understood correctly. Does the deadline also apply to the volunteers?

These questions protect both participants: the listener does not pretend to understand, and the speaker learns exactly what must be repaired.

Repair action, not only language

Some misunderstandings have already produced a wrong action. Then reformulation alone is insufficient. State the corrected instruction, acknowledge the consequence, and adjust the plan.

I expressed myself unclearly: I needed the final table, not the draft. It is not your fault; I will update the schedule to give you an additional day.

This response allocates responsibility rather than using Ni miskomprenis unu la alian automatically. The mutual formula is appropriate only when the misunderstanding was genuinely shared.

Responding without forced forgiveness

For a small inconvenience, Ne gravas, Nenio grava, or En ordo can close the sequence. For serious harm, the recipient need not minimize it. Dankon pro la pardonpeto acknowledges the act without promising immediate forgiveness.

I am sorry that I spoke about that in front of the whole group. — Thank you for apologizing. I need some time before we discuss it further.

An apology is an attempt at repair, not a grammatical command to absolve the speaker. This distinction matters across cultures, where ritual reassurance may be more or less expected.

Register and variation

Pardonu is neutral and extremely flexible. Pardonon! is compact (informal) for a small intrusion. Mi petas pardonon and mi pardonpetas are more explicit (neutral to formal). The older construction pardonu al mi is foundational and grammatical, though compact pardonu and pardonu min are frequent modern choices.

No official rule ranks one complete apology ritual above all others. Corpus evidence can show attested forms and genre, but sincerity depends on action, relationship, and consequence—not frequency alone.

Choose the audience and timing of the repair

Apologize where the harm occurred when public correction is needed, but do not make the harmed person manage a public performance for your benefit. If false information was posted to a group, correct it in that group; if the offense disclosed private information, discuss details privately and publish only the necessary correction.

Yesterday I attributed the proposal to Amir, but Salma wrote it. I apologize to both of them for the error and have corrected the minutes.

This public repair restores the record and names everyone concerned. A private apology alone would leave the false attribution circulating.

Timing matters as well. A prompt acknowledgment can precede a complete investigation: Ni ricevis vian plendon kaj bedaŭras la okazintaĵon. Ni respondos detale ĝis vendredo. Do not claim facts not yet established, but do not use uncertainty as a reason for silence.

Ni ankoraŭ kontrolas, kial la datumoj malaperis. Tamen ni jam scias, ke nia rezerva proceduro ne funkciis, kaj ni respondecas pri ĝia riparo.

We are still checking why the data disappeared. However, we already know that our backup procedure failed, and we are responsible for repairing it.

Tamen separates the unresolved cause from the established responsibility. That logical precision is part of an accountable apology.

Repair prevention and trust

After recurring trouble, “it will not happen again” is weaker than a testable process change. State who will check what and when. This is especially important in formal or institutional apologies, where the speaker represents more than a private feeling.

💡
Match the repair audience to the harm: correct a public record publicly, handle private details privately, and make the preventive action concrete enough to verify.

Common Mistakes

1. Marking the reason with English-like por.

❌ Pardonu por mia malfrua respondo.

Incorrect frame: the reason for the apology is normally marked with pro.

✅ Pardonu pro mia malfrua respondo.

Sorry for my late reply.

2. Putting the apologized-for fact in the volitive.

❌ Pardonu, ke mi interrompu vin hieraŭ.

Incorrect: yesterday's interruption is asserted as a real event, not desired.

✅ Pardonu, ke mi interrompis vin hieraŭ.

Forgive me for interrupting you yesterday.

3. Making a known harm conditional.

❌ Mi bedaŭras, se mi publikigis vian privatan adreson.

Evasive when the publication is already established: se makes it uncertain.

✅ Mi bedaŭras, ke mi publikigis vian privatan adreson, kaj mi jam forigis ĝin.

I am sorry that I published your private address, and I have already removed it.

4. Using do where the explanation is a cause.

Incorrect relation if confusing the names caused the wrong attachment.

I sent the old file because I confused the two names.

Key Takeaways

  • Use pardonu for pardon or intrusion, mi bedaŭras for regret or sympathy, and an explicit pardon request for serious offenses.
  • A full apology can name the act, responsibility, effect, remedy, and prevention without hiding behind explanation.
  • Repair a slip locally with mi volis diri, precision with pli ĝuste, and formulation with alivorte.
  • Ask specifically for the repair you need, and do not treat an apology as a demand for immediate forgiveness.
