عند ʿand — have

English have is a verb. Mainstream Cairene usually expresses the same everyday possession relation with عند + pronoun suffix: عندي عربية “I have a car,” structurally “a car is in my sphere.” This is a prepositional predicate, so it has suffixes rather than a perfect, imperfect, imperative, or participle paradigm.

That structural fact is not a technical footnote. It determines present-tense word order, negation, tense, and the contrast with معايا “with me right now” and مفيش “there is none.” Treating عند as though it were a regular translation of English have produces forms that Egyptian does not have.

The Practical Suffix Paradigm

The suffix identifies the possessor or reference person. The following noun names what exists in that person's sphere.

PossessorFormCairene readingNatural English
أناعِنْدِيʿandiI have
إنت (m.)عِنْدَكْʿandakyou have
إنتيعِنْدِكْʿandikyou have
هوعِنْدُهْʿanduhe has
هيعِنْدَهَاʿandahashe has
إحناعِنْدِنَاʿandinawe have
إنتواعِنْدُكُمْʿandukumyou all have
همعِنْدُهُمْʿanduhumthey have

The Arabic spelling عندك is the same for masculine and feminine singular “you,” but the vowel differs: ʿandak versus ʿandik. The suffix is not a direct object. It is the person around whom the possession relation is organized.

عندنا أوضتين فاضيين، فممكن الضيوف يباتوا هنا.

ʿandina ʾōḍtēn fāḍyīn, fa-momken iḍ-ḍuyūf yibātu hina

We have two spare rooms, so the guests can stay here.

عندك نسخة من العقد ولا أصورهولك؟

ʿandak noskha min il-ʿaʾd walla ʾaṣawwarhūlak

Do you have a copy of the contract, or should I photocopy one for you? (to a man)

Why This Page Has No Verb Conjugation

Because عند is not a finite verb in this construction, it has:

Instead, tense comes from كان “be” and projected future commonly from بقى “become/be in a future state.” The suffix on عند stays the same.

💡
The complete learnable unit is كان عندي / عندي / حيبقى عندي, not three invented tenses of عند.

Present, Past, and Future Possession

Present possession normally has no copula. Put كان before the entire predicate for past possession. For future possession, حيبقى عندي explicitly means “I will have”; in many contexts a future time expression with a present-shaped predicate is also enough.

عندي مكالمة مهمة الساعة أربعة، فحاخرج قبلها.

ʿandi mokālama mohimma s-sāʿa ʾarbaʿa, fa-ḥakhrog ʾablaha

I have an important call at four, so I'll leave before it.

كان عندها محل صغير قبل ما تنقل القاهرة.

kān ʿandaha maḥall ṣoghayyar ʾabl ma tinʾol il-ʾāhira

She had a small shop before she moved to Cairo.

بعد الترقية حيبقى عنده مسؤوليات أكتر.

baʿd it-tarʾiya ḥayibʾa ʿandu masʾūliyyāt ʾaktar

After the promotion, he'll have more responsibilities.

With an overt personal subject, كان often remains singular masculine because the following possessive relation is impersonal: أنا كان عندي، هي كان عندها are ordinary. Speakers can also use subject-linked forms in some discourse settings, but learners should master the stable impersonal frame first rather than imposing English agreement.

What Can Be “Had” with عند

The construction covers more than legal ownership. It locates possessions, available resources, scheduled commitments, relationships, symptoms, ideas, and questions in someone's sphere.

FrameNatural meaning
عندي عربيةI own/have access to a car
عندي وقتI have time available
عندي معادI have an appointment
عندي صداعI have a headache
عندي اقتراحI have a suggestion

الدكتورة عندها اقتراح ممكن يوفر علينا وقت.

id-duktōra ʿandaha iʾtirāḥ momken yiwaffar ʿalēna waʾt

The doctor has a suggestion that could save us time.

عندي برد من يومين، بس ماعنديش حرارة.

ʿandi bard min yōmēn, bass ma-ʿandīsh ḥarāra

I've had a cold for two days, but I don't have a fever.

These extensions are normal Egyptian frames, not metaphors learners must reconstruct each time.

Broad Possession versus Current Custody

عندي describes broad possession, access, or availability. معايا says that something accompanies me or is currently on hand. A speaker may truthfully use one positively and the other negatively.

عندي عربية، بس مش معايا النهارده عشان أخويا خدها.

ʿandi ʿarabiyya, bass mish maʿāya n-naharda ʿashān ʾakhūya khadaha

I have a car, but I don't have it with me today because my brother took it.

English uses have in both halves. Egyptian chooses the relation: ownership/access with عند, immediate accompaniment with مع.

Three Different Negatives

Neutral possessor-centered lack uses joined ما...ش around the suffixed form: ماعنديش، ماعندكش، ماعندوش، ماعندهاش. This is an established construction even though عند is not a regular verb.

مفيش instead denies existence or availability in a scene. مش عندي contrasts the location or custody of an already identifiable item: “it isn't with me / at my place.”

ماعنديش فكة للمية؛ معايا ورقة كبيرة بس.

ma-ʿandīsh fakka lil-miyya; maʿāya waraʾa kibīra bass

I don't have change for a hundred; I only have a large note with me.

مفيش واي فاي في القاعة، بس عندنا نت في المكتب.

mafīsh wāy fāy fi l-ʾāʿa, bass ʿandina nett fi l-maktab

There is no Wi-Fi in the hall, but we have internet in the office.

الملف مش عندي؛ سبته عند المحاسب امبارح.

il-malaff mish ʿandi; sibto ʿand il-muḥāsib imbāriḥ

I don't have the file with me; I left it with the accountant yesterday.

The contrast with existential مفيش is developed on مفيش and nonexistence.

A Short Dialogue

ـ عندك وقت تبص على العرض؟ ـ دلوقتي ماعنديش، بس حيبقى عندي نص ساعة بعد الغدا.

— ʿandak waʾt tibuṣṣ ʿala l-ʿarḍ? — dilwaʾti ma-ʿandīsh, bass ḥayibʾa ʿandi noṣṣ sāʿa baʿd il-ghada

‘Do you have time to look at the proposal?’ ‘Not now, but I'll have half an hour after lunch.’

Register and Formal Alternatives

عند is mainstream Egyptian across ordinary social groups and urban settings (informal/neutral). Formal MSA may use لدى or a finite possession verb such as يملك (formal/legal), depending on meaning. بحوزة is especially legal or administrative “in the possession/custody of” (formal/legal). These are valid code-switching choices, not conversational synonyms to scatter into the Cairo paradigm.

Common Mistakes

1. Inventing a finite present verb

❌ أنا بعند عربية.

Incorrect: possessive عند is not a b-imperfect verb.

✅ أنا عندي عربية قديمة بس حالتها كويسة.

ʾana ʿandi ʿarabiyya ʾadīma bass ḥālitha kowayyisa

I have an old car, but it's in good condition.

2. Using English-style have agreement instead of a suffix

❌ هي عندي وقت بعد الشغل.

Incorrect: the suffix must identify her, not the speaker.

✅ هي عندها وقت بعد الشغل لو حابب تكلمها.

hiyya ʿandaha waʾt baʿd ish-shoghl law ḥābib tikallimha

She has time after work if you'd like to call her. (to a man)

3. Negating possession with مش

❌ مش عندي فلوس كفاية للتاكسي.

Incorrect as neutral broad nonpossession; مش عندي instead contrasts where known money is.

✅ ماعنديش فلوس كفاية للتاكسي، فحاخد المترو.

ma-ʿandīsh fulūs kifāya lit-tāksi, fa-ḥākhod il-metro

I don't have enough money for a taxi, so I'll take the metro.

4. Using عندي for immediate physical custody regardless of contrast

❌ الباسبور عندي في الشنطة اللي معايا.

Awkward for the intended ‘I have it on me’; معايا directly marks current accompaniment.

✅ الباسبور معايا في الشنطة، ماتقلقش.

il-bāsbūr maʿāya fi sh-shanṭa, ma-tiʾlaʾsh

I have the passport with me in the bag; don't worry. (to a man)

5. Importing formal لدي into casual speech

❌ لدي معاد عند الدكتور بعد ساعة.

Register mismatch: لدي belongs to formal Arabic, not neutral Cairene conversation.

✅ عندي معاد عند الدكتور بعد ساعة، فلازم أمشي.

ʿandi miʿād ʿand id-duktōr baʿd sāʿa, fa-lāzim ʾamshi

I have a doctor's appointment in an hour, so I have to leave.

Key Takeaways

  • عند + suffix is a prepositional possession predicate, not a conjugated verb.
  • Use كان عندي for past possession and حيبقى عندي when future possession must be explicit.
  • Choose عند for broad possession or availability and مع for something currently on hand.
  • Use ماعنديش for possessor-centered lack, مفيش for nonexistence, and مش عندي for contrasted location or custody.
