English uses have for ownership, immediate custody, symptoms, appointments, and even obligation. Mainstream Cairene divides that territory among stable frames. عند + suffix places something in a person's sphere, مع + suffix says it is currently with that person, and agreeing محتاج presents a person as needing something or needing to act.
These are everyday (informal/neutral) frames, not incomplete versions of formal Arabic. Their internal pieces remain remarkably stable even when the best English translation changes. For the broader ownership contrast, see possession with عند، مع، and لـ.
The reusable frames
| Frame | Variable slot | Usual job |
|---|---|---|
| عند + suffixed person, then noun | عندي / عندك / عنده... | broad possession, access, time, symptom |
| مع + suffixed person, then noun | معايا / معاك / معاه... | something currently on hand or accompanying someone |
| محتاج + noun | محتاج / محتاجة / محتاجين | need an object, resource, or person |
| محتاج + bare imperfect | the second verb agrees with the needer | need to perform an action |
The person is encoded differently in the two families. عندي contains a pronoun suffix; محتاجة is an agreeing participial predicate. That structural difference controls both agreement and negation.
عند: what is in someone's sphere
Use عند + suffix + noun for possessions, resources, scheduled events, available time, and experienced conditions. The common series is عندي، عندك، عنده، عندها، عندنا، عندكم، عندهم. The noun after it does not have to be a concrete object.
عندي مكالمة مهمة بعد الغدا.
ʿandi mukālama mohimma baʿd il-ghada.
I have an important call after lunch. (literally: an important call is in my sphere)
عندها حساسية من التراب، فاقفل الشباك.
ʿandaha ḥasāsiyya min it-turāb, faʾfil ish-shubbāk.
She has a dust allergy, so close the window.
عندكم وقت نشرب قهوة قبل الفيلم؟
ʿandukum waʾt nishrab ʾahwa ʾabl il-fīlm?
Do you all have time for coffee before the film?
The neutral negative is joined ماعنديش، ماعندكش، ماعندوش. Independent مش عندي is possible when a known item or location is being contrasted—“it isn't with me”—but it is not the default way to say that you lack something.
ماعنديش نت في البيت من امبارح.
maʿandīsh nett fi l-bet min imbāriḥ.
I haven't had internet at home since yesterday.
مع: what is physically or immediately available
Use معايا، معاك، معاه، معاها، معانا، معاكم، معاهم for an item currently carried, held, or entrusted to someone. A person can own something with عنده while not having it on hand with معاه.
معايا بطارية زيادة لو موبايلك فصل.
maʿāya baṭṭariyya ziyāda law mobāylak fiṣil.
I have a spare battery with me in case your phone dies. (to a man)
عندي باسبور، بس مش معايا النهارده.
ʿandi bāsbūr, bass mish maʿāya n-naharda.
I have a passport, but I don't have it with me today.
Here مش negates the nonverbal custody predicate: مش معايا. The productive Cairo baseline does not build the neutral form by wrapping معايا in ما...ش.
محتاج: the needer agrees, the needed item does not
محتاج is an agreeing predicate: masculine singular محتاج, feminine singular محتاجة, and common human plural محتاجين. With a noun, it means “need X.” With a bare imperfect, it means “need to do X.” The bare verb still marks its own subject.
أنا محتاج إيصال عشان أرجع المنتج.
ʾana miḥtāg ʾīṣāl ʿashān ʾaraggaʿ il-muntag.
I need a receipt so I can return the product. (male speaker)
هي محتاجة ترتاح شوية قبل ما تسوق.
hiyya miḥtāga tirtāḥ shwayya ʾabl ma tisūʾ.
She needs to rest a little before driving.
إحنا محتاجين نراجع الأرقام مرة كمان.
ʾiḥna miḥtagīn nirāgiʿ il-ʾarʾām marra kamān.
We need to check the figures one more time.
The pattern is محتاجين نراجع, not محتاجين بنراجع: the first predicate carries the stance of necessity, while the following bare imperfect names the required action. See subject control and bare complements for the larger syntax.
Negate the state with independent مش: مش محتاج “do not need.” This differs sharply from ممنوع or ماينفعش, which can prohibit the action.
مش محتاجين نحجز؛ المكان فاضي يوم التلات.
mish miḥtagīn niḥgiz; il-makān fāḍi yom it-tulāt.
We don't need to book; the place is free on Tuesday.
Past and projected need
Present عندي and محتاج need no copula. Past frames add كان; a future possession can use حيبقى عندي, while a future need often uses ححتاج or a time expression with present محتاج. The frame stays intact.
كان عندي معاد، بس الدكتور لغاه.
kān ʿandi maʿād, bass id-duktūr laghāh.
I had an appointment, but the doctor canceled it.
كنت محتاجة حد يوصلني بعد العملية.
kunt miḥtāga ḥadd yiwaṣṣalni baʿd il-ʿamaliyya.
I needed someone to drive me home after the operation. (female speaker)
الأسبوع الجاي حيبقى عندنا ضيوف من اسكندرية.
il-ʾusbūʿ il-gayy ḥayibʾa ʿandina ḍuyūf min Iskandariyya.
Next week we'll have guests from Alexandria.
Three situations, one stable system
At a shop, معايا كارت reports what you can pay with. At work, عندي اجتماع places an event on your schedule. At home, محتاج أصلح الحنفية presents a necessary action. Translating all three with a single imagined verb hides the Egyptian logic.
معايا كاش، بس محتاج فكة للمية.
maʿāya kāsh, bass miḥtāg fakka lil-miyya.
I have cash on me, but I need change for a hundred.
عندي تدريب الصبح، فمحتاج أنام بدري.
ʿandi tadrīb iṣ-ṣobḥ, fa-miḥtāg ʾanām badri.
I have training in the morning, so I need to sleep early.
الحمام محتاج يتنضف قبل ما الضيوف يوصلوا.
il-ḥammām miḥtāg yitnaḍḍaf ʾabl ma ḍ-ḍuyūf yiwṣalu.
The bathroom needs cleaning before the guests arrive.
The last example extends محتاج to an inanimate subject. This everyday use evaluates what must be done to the bathroom; it does not turn محتاج into an invariable particle.
A practical exchange
أ: معاك مفتاح المخزن؟ إحنا محتاجين كرتونة كبيرة.
A: maʿāk miftāḥ il-makhzan? ʾiḥna miḥtagīn kartūna kibīra.
A: Do you have the storeroom key on you? We need a large box.
ب: المفتاح مش معايا، بس عندي رقم الحارس.
B: il-miftāḥ mish maʿāya, bass ʿandi raʾam il-ḥāris.
B: I don't have the key with me, but I have the guard's number.
The exchange performs a request for access rather than merely displaying vocabulary. معاك asks about current custody; عندي reports access to useful information.
Register and variation
عندي، معايا، محتاج are mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal لديّ “I have” and أحتاج إلى “I need” belong to edited writing, speeches, and formal service language (formal/MSA). They are legitimate, but inserting them into an intimate chat changes the voice. Alexandrian and Delta speech is broadly close; Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class-, age-, and community-linked varieties may have different suffix vowels or competing possession expressions (regional/social).
Common Mistakes
Translating have with a formal ownership verb
❌ أنا أملك برد من امبارح.
Incorrect and register-mismatched: formal ownership أملك does not express an everyday symptom.
✅ عندي برد ومش نازل الشغل النهارده.
ʿandi bard wi-mish nāzil ish-shoghl in-naharda.
I have a cold, and I'm not going to work today.
Separating the pronoun from مع
❌ مع أنا الملف دلوقتي.
Incorrect: the pronoun must attach to مع in its suffixed host form.
✅ الملف معايا، وحسلمهولك بعد الاجتماع.
il-malaff maʿāya, wi-ḥasallimhūlak baʿd il-igtimāʿ.
I have the file with me, and I'll hand it to you after the meeting.
Making محتاج invariable
❌ هي محتاج تروح الصيدلية.
Incorrect in the Cairo baseline: the predicate must agree with the feminine subject.
✅ هي محتاجة تروح الصيدلية قبل ما تقفل.
hiyya miḥtāga tirūḥ iṣ-ṣaydaliyya ʾabl ma tiʾfal.
She needs to go to the pharmacy before it closes.
Adding b- to the required action
❌ أنا محتاج بروح البنك.
Incorrect for one needed action: the complement after محتاج is bare.
✅ أنا محتاج أروح البنك قبل الضهر.
ʾana miḥtāg ʾarūḥ il-bank ʾabl iḍ-ḍohr.
I need to go to the bank before noon.
Confusing no need with prohibition
❌ مش محتاج تدخل هنا.
Wrong for ‘you must not enter’; it only says that entering is unnecessary.
✅ ممنوع تدخل هنا من غير تصريح.
mamnūʿ tidkhul hina min gher taṣrīḥ.
You must not enter here without authorization.
