Ability and Obligation

English can covers ability, permission, and possibility, while must can express obligation or a confident conclusion. Mainstream Cairene does not compress all of those meanings into two words. يقدر assigns an ability to a person, ممكن presents something as possible or asks permission, ينفع evaluates whether it works or is acceptable, and لازم imposes necessity.

These are reusable clause frames. Choosing the frame first is more reliable than translating can, may, must, or have to one word at a time. They also extend the impersonal patterns introduced in possibility and necessity sentences.

The basic decision

FrameQuestion it answersTypical negative
يقدر + bare imperfectDoes this person have the ability/opportunity?مايقدرش / مش قادر
ممكن + clauseIs this possible, or may I/we do it?مش ممكن
ينفع + clause/nounWill this work; is it acceptable?ماينفعش
لازم + bare imperfectWhat is necessary or required?مش لازم “not necessary”

The negative column reveals a crucial asymmetry: مش لازم removes an obligation, whereas ماينفعش often imposes a prohibition. English learners frequently confuse “you don't have to” with “you mustn't”; Egyptian keeps them apart.

يقدر: an ability attached to a person

Learn the verb as قدر / بيقدر. It agrees with the person whose ability is evaluated, then licenses a bare imperfect that agrees with the same person: أقدر أروح، تقدر تروح، نقدر نروح.

أقدر أخلص الطلب قبل الساعة اتنين.

ʾaʾdar ʾakhallaṣ iṭ-ṭalab ʾabl is-sāʿa itnen.

I can finish the order before two o'clock.

تقدري تشيلي الشنطة دي لوحدك؟

tiʾdari tishīli sh-shanṭa di liwaḥdik?

Can you carry this bag by yourself? (to a woman)

هم بيقدروا يشتغلوا من البيت يومين في الأسبوع.

humma biyiʾdaru yishtaghalu min il-bet yomen fi l-ʾusbūʿ.

They are able to work from home two days a week.

The matrix verb carries b- when the ability is presented as actual or regular; the following action remains bare. Perfect قدرت presents achieved ability in a bounded situation—often English “managed to.”

قدرت ألحق آخر مترو رغم الزحمة.

ʾidirt ʾalḥaʾ ʾākhir mitro raghm iz-zaḥma.

I managed to catch the last metro despite the traffic.

For present inability, both مايقدرش and مش قادر occur, with a useful viewpoint difference. مايقدرش negates ability as a verbal fact or general capacity; مش قادر often presents a current state of being unable, exhausted, or blocked.

جدي مايقدرش يطلع السلم من غير مساعدة.

giddi mayiʾdarsh yiṭlaʿ is-sullam min gher musāʿada.

My grandfather can't climb the stairs without help.

أنا مش قادر أركز دلوقتي؛ نكمل بكرة.

ʾana mish ʾādir ʾarakkiz dilwaʾti; nikammil bokra.

I can't concentrate right now; let's continue tomorrow. (male speaker)

💡
Use قدر / بيقدر for an ability attributed to someone. The following action is bare: بيقدر يسوق, never بيقدر بيسوق for one ability frame.

ممكن: possibility and permission

ممكن is invariable in the impersonal frame. A following bare imperfect identifies the possible action and its performer. A pronoun is added only when clarity or contrast calls for it.

ممكن نتقابل بعد الشغل بدل الصبح.

momkin nitʾābil baʿd ish-shoghl badal iṣ-ṣobḥ.

We can meet after work instead of in the morning.

ممكن أفتح الشباك؟ الجو مكتوم.

momkin ʾaftaḥ ish-shubbāk? il-gaww maktūm.

May I open the window? It's stuffy.

ممكن المطر يتأخر لحد الفجر.

momkin il-maṭar yitʾakhkhar liḥadd il-fagr.

The rain may not start until dawn.

The first offers a workable arrangement, the second requests permission, and the third assesses likelihood. Context and intonation distinguish them. ممكن does not agree with أنا، إحنا, or المطر.

ينفع: workable, suitable, or allowed

ينفع literally evaluates whether something gives benefit or works, and it extends naturally to suitability and social permission. It is common in practical negotiations: times, objects, payment methods, and acceptable behavior.

ينفع معاك يوم الخميس بدل الأربع؟

yinfaʿ maʿāk yom il-khamīs badal il-ʾarbaʿ?

Would Thursday work for you instead of Wednesday? (to a man)

الكارت ده ينفع للدفع أونلاين.

il-kārt da yinfaʿ lid-dafʿ ʾonlāyn.

This card works for online payment.

Negative ماينفعش can mean “it won't work,” “that isn't appropriate,” or “you must not,” depending on the scene. Because it evaluates acceptability, it is often socially less blunt than a bare command but still carries a real boundary.

ماينفعش نسيب الطفل لوحده في العربية.

mayinfaʿsh nisīb iṭ-ṭifl liwaḥdu fi l-ʿarabiyya.

We mustn't leave the child alone in the car. (literally: it isn't acceptable/workable)

لازم: necessity, not person agreement

لازم is invariable before a clause. The bare imperfect identifies who must act: لازم أمشي، لازم تمشي، لازم نمشي. This is why no independent subject is required when the verb ending makes the person clear.

لازم أجيب الدوا قبل ما الصيدلية تقفل.

lāzim ʾagīb id-dawa ʾabl ma ṣ-ṣaydaliyya tiʾfal.

I have to get the medicine before the pharmacy closes.

لازم تبعتوا الصور الأصلية من غير تعديل.

lāzim tibʿatu ṣ-ṣuwar il-ʾaṣliyya min gher taʿdīl.

You all must send the original photos without editing them.

Past obligation uses كان لازم. It can report an obligation whether or not it was fulfilled; the wider context settles that question.

كان لازم أمشي بدري، بس الاجتماع طول.

kān lāzim ʾamshi badri, bass il-igtimāʿ ṭawwil.

I was supposed to leave early, but the meeting ran long.

مش لازم تيجي بنفسك؛ ممكن تبعت حد مكانك.

mish lāzim tīgi binafsak; momkin tibʿat ḥadd makānak.

You don't have to come in person; you can send someone in your place. (to a man)

💡
Memorize the polarity contrast as a pair: مش لازم = “not necessary”; ماينفعش = “not workable/allowed.” They are not interchangeable.

Three everyday decisions

At work, ability is personal: تقدر تخلص؟ At reception, permission is situational: ممكن أدخل؟ In a safety rule, necessity is imposed: لازم تلبس خوذة. The English modal alone does not reveal which relation is intended.

تقدر تستلم الشيفت الساعة ستة؟

tiʾdar tistalim ish-shift is-sāʿa sitta?

Can you take over the shift at six? (asking about ability/availability)

ممكن أدخل بالعربية لحد البوابة؟

momkin ʾadkhul bil-ʿarabiyya liḥadd il-bawwāba?

May I drive in as far as the gate?

لازم تلبس خوذة جوه الموقع.

lāzim tilbis khūza guwwa l-mawʾiʿ.

You must wear a helmet on the site.

A dialogue about access

أ: ممكن أدخل الاجتماع من الموبايل؟

A: momkin ʾadkhul il-igtimāʿ min il-mobāyl?

A: Can I join the meeting from my phone?

ب: ينفع، بس لازم تفتح الكاميرا وقت العرض.

B: yinfaʿ, bass lāzim tiftaḥ il-kāmīra waʾt il-ʿarḍ.

B: That works, but you have to turn on the camera during the presentation.

أ: حاضر، بس الشبكة ممكن تقطع عندي.

A: ḥāḍir, bass ish-shabaka momkin tiʾṭaʿ ʿandi.

A: Okay, but my connection might drop.

The same conversation uses permission, suitability, obligation, and possibility without one all-purpose equivalent of can or must.

Register and social force

These frames are mainstream urban Egyptian (informal/neutral). Formal يستطيع “is able” and يجب أن “must” are common in official notices, news, and careful MSA-oriented speech (formal/MSA). لازم directed at a stranger can sound authoritative; a question with ممكن or an explanation can soften the imposition. Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, and other regional or community varieties have their own modal inventories (regional/social), so equivalent meanings need not use the same preferred frame.

Common Mistakes

Putting b- on both verbs

❌ هي بتقدر بتسوق بالليل.

Incorrect for one ability frame: the action after بتقدر is bare.

✅ هي بتقدر تسوق بالليل من غير مشكلة.

hiyya bitiʾdar tisūʾ bil-lel min gher moshkila.

She can drive at night without any problem.

Making ممكن agree like an adjective

❌ إحنا ممكنين نيجي بعد الضهر.

Incorrect: impersonal ممكن does not agree with the people in the possible action.

✅ ممكن نيجي بعد الضهر لو يناسبك.

momkin nīgi baʿd iḍ-ḍohr law yināsibak.

We can come in the afternoon if that suits you. (to a man)

Using مش لازم for prohibition

❌ مش لازم تصور هنا.

Wrong for a ban: this means that taking pictures is unnecessary.

✅ ماينفعش تصور هنا من غير إذن.

mayinfaʿsh tiṣawwar hina min gher ʾizn.

You mustn't take pictures here without permission.

Adding an English-style infinitive marker

❌ لازم إلى نكلم المدير.

Incorrect: everyday لازم takes a bare person-marked imperfect, not a translated ‘to.’

✅ لازم نكلم المدير قبل القرار النهائي.

lāzim nikallim il-modīr ʾabl il-ʾarār in-nihāʾi.

We must speak to the manager before the final decision.

Importing formal يستطيع into an ordinary chat

❌ هل تستطيع تيجي معانا الكافيه؟

A register-mixed frame: formal هل تستطيع clashes with the ordinary Egyptian complement and setting.

✅ تقدر تيجي معانا الكافيه بعد الشغل؟

tiʾdar tīgi maʿāna l-kāfeh baʿd ish-shoghl?

Can you come to the café with us after work?

Key Takeaways

  • Use يقدر for a person's ability, ممكن for possibility or permission, and ينفع for workability or acceptability.
  • Use invariable لازم plus a bare imperfect for obligation.
  • مش لازم removes necessity; ماينفعش can prohibit.
  • Perfect قدرت often means “managed to,” while مش قادر commonly presents current inability.
  • Formal modal vocabulary is a register choice, not the default for everyday Cairo.
