Cause and Result: عشان كده، أصل، and يبقى

Cairene conversation packages cause and result in several different directions. عشان كده points back to an established cause and introduces its result: “that’s why” or “so.” أصل supplies background that explains or justifies what was just said: “because,” “you see,” or sometimes no separate English word. Discourse يبقى draws an inference or next practical step: “then,” “in that case,” or “so.”

These are not three interchangeable translations of English so or because. They tell the listener where the reasoning starts and what kind of move comes next. This page concentrates on that discourse organization; cause clauses and result clauses cover fuller clause syntax.

The direction of reasoning

MarkerWhat is already active?What follows?
عشان كدهa cause or relevant situationits actual result
أصلa claim, refusal, question, or surprising actionbackground explaining it
يبقىevidence or a conditionan inference, decision, or next step

The arrows matter. الطريق واقف، عشان كده اتأخرنا moves from traffic to an actual delay. اتأخرنا، أصل الطريق كان واقف begins with the delay and then explains it. الطريق واقف؟ يبقى ناخد المترو uses the traffic report to choose a new action.

Rule 1: عشان كده introduces a result

The cause normally comes first, either in the same turn or in the preceding conversation. عشان كده points back to it with كده “like that/that situation.”

الطريق كان واقف، عشان كده اتأخرنا عن الميعاد

iṭ-ṭarīʾ kān wāʾif, ʿashān kida tʾakhkharna ʿan il-mīʿād

Traffic was at a standstill, so we were late for the appointment.

المخزن مفيهوش المقاس ده، وعشان كده طلبناه من الفرع التاني

il-makhzan ma-fīhūsh il-maʾās da, wi-ʿashān kida ṭalabnāh min il-farʿ it-tāni

The storeroom doesn’t have that size, so we ordered it from the other branch.

The result can be completed, habitual, future, negative, or an instruction. عشان كده does not determine the verb form; the intended time and aspect do.

💡
With عشان كده, ask “What situation does كده point back to?” If no cause is available in the discourse, the listener will wait for missing context.

Rule 2: أصل gives the explanation after the claim

أصل commonly follows a refusal, correction, apology, or action that needs justification. It introduces information the speaker treats as useful background.

مش هقدر أخرج النهارده، أصل عندي شغل لازم يخلص

mish haʾdar ʾakhrog in-nahārda, ʾaṣl ʿandi shoghl lāzim yikhlaṣ

I can’t go out today; I have work that has to be finished.

ماتستناش لينا، أصل هي قالت إنها هتتأخر

ma-tistannāsh Līna, ʾaṣl hiyya ʾālit ʾinnaha hatitʾakhkhar

Don’t wait for Lina; she said she would be late.

Natural English often omits a translation for أصل, because tone and clause order already imply explanation. Deleting it from Egyptian can make the second clause sound like an unrelated new fact. It can also soften the speaker’s stance by presenting the reason before the listener has to demand one.

أصل here is a discourse marker. Do not translate it literally as the noun “origin/root,” even though that lexical noun also exists.

Rule 3: يبقى draws an inference or chooses a next step

Discourse يبقى is a fixed third-person form in this use. It does not agree with the person who will perform the following action.

المكتب قافل بكرة؟ يبقى نبعت الورق النهارده

il-maktab ʾāfil bukra? yibʾa nibʿat il-waraʾ in-nahārda

The office is closed tomorrow? Then we should send the papers today.

سلمى ماردتش، يبقى على الأغلب لسه في الاجتماع

Salma ma-radditish, yibʾa ʿala l-ʾaghlab lissa fi l-igtimāʿ

Salma didn’t answer, so she’s probably still in the meeting.

The first inference produces a decision. The second produces a tentative conclusion, softened by على الأغلب. The evidence supports the conclusion but does not guarantee it.

This marker must be distinguished from lexical يبقى “remain/become/be in a future or conditional frame,” which can have its own subject:

خليه يبقى معانا لحد ما أخوه ييجي

khallīh yibʾa maʿāna la-ḥadd ma ʾakhūh yīgi

Let him stay with us until his brother comes.

Here يبقى is inside the clause and describes what “he” should do; it is not an inferential connector.

💡
Fixed discourse يبقى means “given that, the conclusion is….” It stays يبقى even before إحنا or هم. Lexical يبقى belongs to a predicate and has an ordinary grammatical subject.

The same situation with three different relations

The following examples share one real-world problem but organize it differently.

الأتوبيس اتعطل، عشان كده وصلنا بعد البداية

il-ʾotobīs itʿaṭṭal, ʿashān kida wiṣilna baʿd il-bidāya

The bus broke down, so we arrived after the start. (actual cause and result)

وصلنا بعد البداية، أصل الأتوبيس اتعطل في الطريق

wiṣilna baʿd il-bidāya, ʾaṣl il-ʾotobīs itʿaṭṭal fiṭ-ṭarīʾ

We arrived after the start; the bus had broken down on the way. (later explanation)

الأتوبيس اتعطل؟ يبقى نطلب عربية توصلنا

il-ʾotobīs itʿaṭṭal? yibʾa niṭlob ʿarabiyya tiwaṣṣalna

The bus broke down? Then let’s order a car to take us.

The marker determines whether the next clause is a result, a reason, or a decision. A single English subtitle with so cannot teach this directional contrast.

A three-turn exchange

إنت لسه في البيت؟ الاجتماع بعد نص ساعة

ʾinta lissa fi l-bēt? il-igtimāʿ baʿd nuṣṣ sāʿa

Are you still at home? The meeting is in half an hour.

أصل العربية مش راضية تدور

ʾaṣl il-ʿarabiyya mish rāḍya tidūr

The thing is, the car won’t start.

يبقى سيبها وخد تاكسي؛ الزحمة خفيفة، وعشان كده على الأغلب هتلحق

yibʾa sībha wi-khud tāksi; iz-zaḥma khafīfa, wi-ʿashān kida ʿala l-ʾaghlab hatilḥaʾ

Then leave it and take a taxi; traffic is light, so you’ll probably make it.

The explanation with أصل answers the implied criticism. يبقى converts that information into advice, and عشان كده predicts a result from the light traffic.

Paragraph-level reasoning

الفريق خلص الجزء الصعب بدري، عشان كده قدرنا نجرب النسخة مرتين. لقينا مشكلة صغيرة، أصل ملف واحد كان قديم. يبقى نحدث الملف ونجرب مرة أخيرة قبل ما نبعت الشغل

il-farīʾ khallaṣ il-guzʾ iṣ-ṣaʿb badri, ʿashān kida ʾadarna nigarrab in-nuskha marratēn. Laʾēna mushkila ṣughayyara, ʾaṣl malaff wāḥid kān ʾadīm. Yibʾa niḥaddis il-malaff wi-nigarrab marra ʾakhīra ʾabl ma nibʿat ish-shughl

The team finished the difficult part early, so we managed to test the version twice. We found one small problem because one file was old. In that case, let’s update the file and test once more before sending the work.

This paragraph moves from actual result, to backward-looking explanation, to forward-looking decision. Repeating only عشان كده would erase those changes in reasoning direction.

Register and variation

عشان كده، أصل, and inferential يبقى are mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). لذلك، إذن، بسبب ذلك belong mainly to formal writing and prepared MSA-oriented speech (formal). بالتالي is common in professional and media speech (professional/formal-leaning) and also occurs in educated conversation.

Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties differ in marker frequency and prosody (regional/social). أصل can sound defensive or warmly explanatory depending on intonation; that interpersonal value cannot be read from spelling alone.

Common Mistakes

Putting عشان كده before the cause

❌ عشان كده المطر شديد، الماتش اتلغى

Incorrect for the intended direction—عشان كده should introduce the result, not the cause.

✅ المطر زاد قوي، عشان كده الماتش اتلغى

il-maṭar zād ʾawi, ʿashān kida l-mātsh itlagha

The rain got much heavier, so the match was canceled.

Translating أصل as the noun “origin”

❌ مش جاي، أصل أنا تعبان يعني أصل الشيء

Incorrect analysis—discourse أصل introduces the explanation; it is not the noun ‘origin’ here.

✅ مش جاي معاكم، أصل أنا تعبان من امبارح

mish gāy maʿākum, ʾaṣl ʾana taʿbān min imbāriḥ

I’m not coming with you; I’ve been tired since yesterday.

Making discourse يبقى agree with the following subject

❌ الطريق مقفول، نبقى إحنا ناخد الكوبري

Different from the intended fixed connector: نبقى creates an agreeing predicate or auxiliary (‘then we...’), while neutral inferential يبقى remains fixed before إحنا.

✅ الطريق مقفول، يبقى إحنا ناخد الكوبري القديم

iṭ-ṭarīʾ maʾfūl, yibʾa ʾiḥna nākhod il-kobri l-ʾadīm

The road is closed, so we should take the old bridge.

Using يبقى as an automatic future copula

❌ بكرة يبقى الجو حر

Wrong as a neutral weather prediction—this suggests inference or a marked ‘becomes/remains’ reading.

✅ بكرة الجو هيبقى حر بعد الضهر

bukra l-gaww hayibʾa ḥarr baʿd iḍ-ḍohr

Tomorrow the weather will be hot in the afternoon.

Repeating one connector for every reasoning step

❌ اتأخرنا، عشان كده الطريق كان واقف، عشان كده ناخد المترو

Incorrect organization—the middle clause is an explanation and the last clause is a decision, not two results.

✅ اتأخرنا، أصل الطريق كان واقف؛ يبقى بكرة ناخد المترو

itʾakhkharna, ʾaṣl iṭ-ṭarīʾ kān wāʾif; yibʾa bukra nākhod il-mitro

We were late because traffic was at a standstill; so tomorrow let’s take the metro.

Key Takeaways

  • cause + عشان كده + result points forward to what actually followed.
  • claim + أصل + explanation gives background after something needing justification.
  • evidence + يبقى + inference/decision turns information into a conclusion or next step.
  • Discourse يبقى is fixed; lexical يبقى remains an ordinary predicate inside its clause.
