Everyday Cairene has several ways to add information, and they do not all perform the same conversational job. كمان adds another participant, property, or action. Turn-initial وكمان explicitly continues a list or argument. غير كده steps back and adds a separate consideration: “besides that,” “what’s more,” or sometimes simply “plus.”
English often leaves these relations implicit or translates all three with also. In Egyptian, the marker helps the listener track whether the speaker is extending the same point or opening a new supporting point. That organizational work remains real even when a natural English subtitle omits the marker.
Rule 1: كمان adds within the current topic
When كمان follows a noun phrase, it commonly adds that person or thing to an already active set. Later in the clause, it can add an action or property.
داليا كمان هتحضر للمقابلة بكرة
Dālya kamān hatḥaḍḍar lil-muʾābla bukra
Dalia is also going to prepare for the interview tomorrow.
الأوضة واسعة وفيها بلكونة كمان
il-ʾōḍa wāsʿa wi-fīha balkōna kamān
The room is spacious, and it has a balcony too.
The first adds داليا to other people preparing. The second adds a balcony to the room’s attractive features. Stress and context can refine the focus, so the placement principles on focus adverbs still apply.
Rule 2: وكمان announces another point
Attached و plus كمان often occurs at the start of a clause or turn. It signals “I have one more thing to add.” The conjunction is written joined: وكمان, never و كمان in this guide’s spelling.
المكان قريب من المترو، وكمان الشارع هادي بالليل
il-makān ʾarīb min il-mitro, wi-kamān ish-shāriʿ hādi bil-lēl
The place is near the metro, and the street is quiet at night too.
خلصت مراجعة الأرقام، وكمان كتبت الملاحظات للمدير
khallaṣt murāgaʿit il-ʾarʾām, wi-kamān katabt il-mulāḥaẓāt lil-mudīr
I finished checking the figures, and I also wrote the notes for the manager.
In speech, وكمان normally has a small prosodic restart before the added clause. That restart is why it works well for list-building and why repeating it before every sentence can sound rehearsed or childish.
Rule 3: غير كده adds an independent consideration
Literally composed of “other than that,” discourse غير كده is not usually a comparison of two physical objects. It tells the listener to consider an additional reason, consequence, or fact outside the immediately preceding point.
Compare two sentences that English could subtitle with Plus:
الفندق نضيف، وكمان الفطار حلو
il-funduʾ niḍīf, wi-kamān il-fiṭār ḥilw
The hotel is clean; plus, the breakfast is good. (another feature in the same review)
الفندق نضيف؛ غير كده، المؤتمر نفسه فيه
il-funduʾ niḍīf; ghēr kida, il-muʾtamar nafsu fīh
The hotel is clean; plus, the conference itself is there. (a separate practical reason)
The second sentence changes the basis of the recommendation—from quality to logistics. That discourse step is the distinguishing force of غير كده.
Rule 4: addition markers manage turns, not just propositions
A speaker can use وكمان to hold the floor while adding evidence. Another speaker can use غير كده to contribute a new supporting point.
هنجيب أكل من بره ولا كل واحد جايب غداه؟
hangīb ʾakl min barra walla kull wāḥid gāyib ghadāh?
Are we getting food delivered, or is everyone bringing lunch?
أنا جايب سندوتشات، وكمان معايا عصير للكل
ʾana gāyib sandwitshāt, wi-kamān maʿāya ʿaṣīr lil-kull
I’m bringing sandwiches, and I’ve got juice for everyone too.
تمام؛ غير كده، عندنا قهوة وشاي في المطبخ
tamām; ghēr kida, ʿandana ʾahwa wi-shāy fi l-maṭbakh
Great; besides that, we have coffee and tea in the kitchen.
The second turn extends one person’s contribution. The third speaker adds a separate resource already available at the office. Removing both markers would preserve basic facts but make the cooperative structure less explicit.
Rule 5: at paragraph level, vary the relation you signal
In a longer explanation, وكمان can add closely parallel evidence, while غير كده can introduce another dimension of the argument.
اخترنا القاعة عشان قريبة من كل الفروع، وكمان فيها أجهزة عرض جديدة. غير كده، صاحب المكان وافق يغير الميعاد من غير زيادة في السعر
ikhtarna l-ʾāʿa ʿashān ʾarība min kull il-furūʿ, wi-kamān fīha ʾag-hizit ʿarḍ gidīda. Ghēr kida, ṣāḥib il-makān wāfaʾ yighayyar il-mīʿād min ghēr ziyāda fi s-siʿr
We chose the hall because it is close to every branch, and it also has new presentation equipment. Besides that, the owner agreed to change the date without raising the price.
The equipment belongs to the hall-feature list. The owner’s flexibility is a new negotiating advantage. A repeated وكمان would remain grammatical, but it would flatten that distinction.
Co-occurrence and ordering
و can attach to either expression: وكمان is extremely common, and وغير كده is possible when the preceding syntax already invites coordination. Do not mechanically stack وكمان غير كده; the two markers compete to define the relation. Choose the one whose discourse instruction you mean.
كمان may also co-occur with a focused noun inside a clause while غير كده organizes the larger turn. For example, a speaker can first add نادية كمان “Nadia too,” then begin a new sentence with غير كده to add a logistical reason.
Register and variation
All three forms are mainstream urban Egyptian (informal/neutral). بالإضافة لكده appears in professional or explanatory speech (semi-formal). بالإضافة إلى ذلك، علاوة على ذلك are MSA-oriented connectors (formal). Code-switching to them in a presentation is a structured register choice, not an error.
Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class, age, and community varieties differ in preferred additive markers and prosody (regional/social). Some speakers use كمان more freely at turn openings; the distinction here describes a productive Cairo baseline, not an absolute boundary.
Common Mistakes
Writing the conjunction separately
❌ المكان واسع، و كمان قريب
Incorrect house spelling—the conjunction و attaches to كمان.
✅ المكان واسع، وكمان قريب من موقف الأتوبيس
il-makān wāsiʿ, wi-kamān ʾarīb min mawʾif il-ʾotobīs
The place is spacious, and it’s also near the bus stop.
Translating غير كده literally
❌ الشنطة غير كده
Incorrect for ‘the bag is different’; discourse غير كده means ‘besides that,’ not a standalone adjective ‘different.’
✅ الشنطة شكلها حلو؛ غير كده، حجمها مناسب للسفر
ish-shanṭa shaklha ḥilw; ghēr kida, ḥagmha munāsib lis-safar
The bag looks good; besides that, its size works for travel.
Repeating one classroom connector before every sentence
❌ وكمان السعر مناسب، وكمان المكان قريب، وكمان المالك متعاون
Incorrect discourse organization—the mechanical repetition hides the shift to a separate consideration.
✅ السعر مناسب والمكان قريب؛ غير كده، المالك متعاون
is-siʿr munāsib wi-l-makān ʾarīb; ghēr kida, il-mālik mitʿāwin
The price works and the place is nearby; besides that, the landlord is cooperative.
Using addition for a real contrast
❌ الشقة صغيرة، وكمان مريحة
Wrong for the intended ‘small but comfortable’—كمان merely adds two compatible properties.
✅ الشقة صغيرة، بس مريحة ومتنظمة كويس
ish-shaʾʾa ṣughayyara, bass murīḥa wi-mitnaẓẓima kuwayyis
The apartment is small, but it is comfortable and well organized.
