到 (dào) is a small word that does three big jobs. On its own it is the verb "to arrive / reach" (火车到了 "the train has arrived"). Placed before another verb it is a coverb of destination, "to (a place)" (到北京去 "go to Beijing"). And placed after another verb it becomes a resultative complement meaning the action reached its target — which is why 找 is merely "look for" but 找到 is "find," and 看 is "look" but 看到 is "catch sight of." Getting comfortable with all three positions unlocks a huge amount of everyday Chinese.
Sense 1: arrive / reach (the full verb)
As a main verb, 到 means to arrive somewhere or reach a point. It usually pairs with 了, because arriving is a change of state.
火车快到了,我们去站台吧。
huǒchē kuài dào le, wǒmen qù zhàntái ba
The train's almost here — let's go to the platform.
我到家了,你别担心。
wǒ dào jiā le, nǐ bié dānxīn
I've got home, don't worry. — 到家 'reach home'.
都八点了,快到点了!
dōu bā diǎn le, kuài dào diǎn le
It's already eight — it's almost time! — 到点 'the time has come'.
Sense 2: to (a place / time) — the coverb
Before another verb, 到 introduces where the action heads. The frame is 到 + place + verb — the destination comes before the main verb, often closed off with 去 or 来. In a time range, 从 A 到 B means "from A to B."
这个周末我想到海边去。
zhège zhōumò wǒ xiǎng dào hǎibiān qù
This weekend I want to go to the seaside. — 到…去 frames the destination.
你到这儿来,我给你看个东西。
nǐ dào zhèr lái, wǒ gěi nǐ kàn ge dōngxi
Come over here, I'll show you something.
我从早上九点忙到晚上八点。
wǒ cóng zǎoshang jiǔ diǎn máng dào wǎnshang bā diǎn
I was busy from nine in the morning till eight at night. — 从…到… range.
The coverb 到 is the sibling of the fuller coverb entry on 到 'to'; the 从…到… range pairs it with 从 'from'.
Sense 3: reaching the target — the resultative complement
This is where 到 does its most characteristic work. Attach it to a verb and it signals that the action succeeded or reached an endpoint. The verb names the effort; 到 confirms the result.
太好了,我终于买到票了!
tài hǎo le, wǒ zhōngyú mǎidào piào le
Great, I finally managed to buy a ticket! — 买 'buy (try)' → 买到 'succeed in buying'.
你的钥匙找到了吗?
nǐ de yàoshi zhǎodào le ma
Did you find your keys? — 找 'look for' → 找到 'find'.
我刚才好像听到有人敲门。
wǒ gāngcái hǎoxiàng tīngdào yǒurén qiāomén
I think I just heard someone knock. — 听 'listen' → 听到 'hear'.
一直走到红绿灯,然后右拐。
yìzhí zǒudào hónglǜdēng, ránhòu yòu guǎi
Keep walking up to the traffic light, then turn right. — 到 marks the endpoint of the walking.

Grammar notes
V+到 is a resultative complement of attainment — the fuller treatment lives on the resultative 到 page, part of the resultative complements overview. Two things follow from that:
- Negation uses 没, not 不. "I didn't manage to buy it" is 没买到, and the ability version "I can't get hold of it" is the potential form 买不到 (positive 买得到). You never say ✗不买到.
- 了 typically follows the whole V+到 chunk: 买到了, 找到了 — the 了 marks that the result was achieved (see 了 as perfective).
The reason English speakers keep dropping 到 is that English hides "successfully" inside the plain verb: "find" already means "look and succeed." Chinese splits that into two morphemes — 找 (look) + 到 (succeed) — so the pair 找 vs 找到 is the cleanest place to feel the difference.
Common Mistakes
1. Dropping 到 where English hides "successfully." 找 alone is only "look for."
❌ 你的手机找了吗?
Says only 'Did you look for your phone?' — not 'Did you find it?'
✅ 你的手机找到了吗?
nǐ de shǒujī zhǎodào le ma
Did you find your phone?
2. Putting the destination after the main verb. With coverb 到, the place goes before the verb.
❌ 我吃饭到食堂。
Wrong order — the 到-place must come before the verb.
✅ 我到食堂吃饭。
wǒ dào shítáng chīfàn
I go to the canteen to eat.
3. Negating V+到 with 不. A failed result is 没; an inability is the potential form 买不到.
❌ 演唱会的票我不买到。
Wrong — use 没买到 (didn't get one) or 买不到 (can't get one).
✅ 演唱会的票我没买到。
yǎnchànghuì de piào wǒ méi mǎidào
I didn't manage to get concert tickets.
4. Leaving 到 out of the 从…到… range. Both halves are needed.
❌ 商店从九点十点开门。
Missing 到 — a range needs 从 … 到 …
✅ 商店从九点到十点开门。
shāngdiàn cóng jiǔ diǎn dào shí diǎn kāimén
The shop is open from nine to ten.
Key Takeaways
- Three positions, three jobs: 到 as a full verb = "arrive" (到家了); before a verb = coverb "to" (到北京去); after a verb = complement "reach/succeed" (找到, 看到).
- V+到 means the action hit its target — 找 is "look for," 找到 is "find"; 看 is "look," 看到 is "see."
- Negate V+到 with 没 (没找到), and use the potential V不到 / V得到 for ability.
- In 从…到… both ends are obligatory; the coverb 到 always sits before the verb it points to.

- 找 (zhǎo) — look for / find / give changeHSK 2 — 找 (zhǎo) means 'look for / seek' (找工作, 找人) — bare 找 is only the searching, not the finding; 'find (successfully)' needs the complement 找到. It also means 'give change' (找钱) and 'go see / contact' a person.
- 来 (lái) — to comeHSK 1 — 来 (lái) is 'come (toward the speaker)' — a full verb (他来了), a directional marker (进来, 拿来, 回来), a serial 'come / let me' (我来帮你), the diner's 'I'll have' (来一个), and 'bring about' (带来). It always points motion toward the here-and-now; 去 points away.
- 去 (qù) — to goHSK 1 — 去 (qù) is 'go, away from where the speaker is': the destination attaches directly (去北京, no 'to'), it frames purpose in serial verbs (去买东西), and it works as a directional complement (回去, 拿去) — the mirror image of 来 (lái).
