到 (dào) is the resultative that turns a try into a success. On its own, 找 (zhǎo) means only "look for"; it says nothing about whether you found anything. Add 到 and 找到 means "find" — you looked and got there. English buries this attempt-versus-attainment split inside single verbs: find already implies success, look for doesn't, and there's no visible morpheme linking them. Chinese makes it explicit. Whenever an English verb secretly means "successfully got/perceived/reached it" — find, get hold of, receive, catch sight of, hit upon — the Chinese is usually V + 到.
到 = the goal was reached
The verb names the effort; 到 says it paid off. This covers acquiring, receiving, perceiving, and mental "reaching":
| Verb + 到 | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 找到 | zhǎo dào | find (looked → found) |
| 买到 | mǎi dào | manage to buy / get hold of |
| 收到 | shōu dào | receive (it arrived) |
| 看到 | kàn dào | catch sight of |
| 想到 | xiǎng dào | think of / hit upon |
我终于买到那场演唱会的票了!
wǒ zhōngyú mǎi dào nà chǎng yǎnchànghuì de piào le!
I finally managed to get tickets to that concert! (informal) — 买到 = the buying succeeded.
我昨天收到了你的邮件。
wǒ zuótiān shōu dào le nǐ de yóujiàn
I received your email yesterday. (neutral) — 收到 = it reached me.
我怎么没想到这个办法呢!
wǒ zěnme méi xiǎng dào zhège bànfǎ ne!
How did I not think of this solution! (informal) — 想到 = the idea got 'reached' in the mind.
Attempt vs attainment: 找 vs 找到
The single clearest demonstration of 到 is the pair 找 / 找到. This is worth drilling until it's automatic, because dropping 到 is the most common learner error here — it leaves you saying "I looked for it" when you mean "I found it."
我找工作找了三个月,上周终于找到了。
wǒ zhǎo gōngzuò zhǎo le sān ge yuè, shàng zhōu zhōngyú zhǎo dào le
I job-hunted for three months and finally found one last week. (informal) — 找 (looked) then 找到 (found).
我找了一上午也没找到。
wǒ zhǎo le yí shàngwǔ yě méi zhǎo dào
I searched all morning and still didn't find it. (informal) — 没找到 = the search failed.
到 versus 见: overlap and difference
For plain seeing, 看到 and 看见 are near-synonyms — both "caught sight of." The difference is reach: 见 stays with the senses, while 到 also covers acquiring, receiving, and reaching a point. 看到 even doubles as "reach (a page/line) while reading."
我刚才在超市看到李老师了。
wǒ gāngcái zài chāoshì kàn dào lǐ lǎoshī le
I saw Teacher Li at the supermarket just now. (informal) — 看到 ≈ 看见 for catching sight.
请翻到第五页,你看到那张图了吗?
qǐng fān dào dì-wǔ yè, nǐ kàn dào nà zhāng tú le ma?
Turn to page five — do you see that picture? (neutral) — 翻到 (reach a page), 看到 (spot it).
Note that 到 also marks reaching a place or time as a directional/coverb complement (开到海边 "drive all the way to the sea," 从早到晚 "from morning till night") — a wider job covered on the 到 as arrival page. Here we stay with the "attainment" result.
Negation and the potential form
The completed failure is 没, never 不: 没买到 (didn't manage to buy), 没收到 (didn't receive). The potential slots 得/不 inside — 买得到 / 买不到, 找得到 / 找不到 — for whether attainment is possible at all.
对不起,我没收到你的消息。
duìbuqǐ, wǒ méi shōu dào nǐ de xiāoxi
Sorry, I didn't get your message. (neutral) — 没收到 = it never arrived.
这么小的城市,买不到进口奶酪。
zhème xiǎo de chéngshì, mǎi bu dào jìnkǒu nǎilào
In such a small town you can't get imported cheese. (informal) — 买不到 = getting hold of it is impossible.
别担心,这本书网上找得到。
bié dānxīn, zhè běn shū wǎng shàng zhǎo de dào
Don't worry — you can find this book online. (informal) — 找得到 = finding it is possible.
Common Mistakes
1. Dropping 到 for "find / get." The bare verb reports only the attempt.
❌ 我找我的手机了。
Says 'I looked for my phone', not 'I found it' — missing 到.
✅ 我找到我的手机了。
wǒ zhǎo dào wǒ de shǒujī le
I found my phone. (informal) — 找到 = the search succeeded.
2. Negating the completed event with 不. An attainment that failed is 没, not 不.
❌ 我不买到票。
Incorrect — for 'didn't manage to buy', use 没买到.
✅ 我没买到票。
wǒ méi mǎi dào piào
I didn't manage to buy a ticket. (neutral) — 没买到 for the failed attainment.
3. Confusing 没找到 with 找不到. 没找到 = "didn't find (this time)"; 找不到 = "can't find it (it's unfindable)."
✅ 我找了半天没找到,可能永远也找不到了。
wǒ zhǎo le bàntiān méi zhǎo dào, kěnéng yǒngyuǎn yě zhǎo bu dào le
I searched a long time and didn't find it — maybe I'll never find it. (informal) — 没找到 (didn't) vs 找不到 (can't).
4. Splitting the object between the verb and 到. 到 stays fused to the verb; the object follows.
❌ 我买票到了。
Incorrect — 票 can't sit between 买 and 到.
✅ 我买到票了。
wǒ mǎi dào piào le
I managed to buy a ticket. (informal) — 买到 first, then 票.
Key Takeaways
- 到 (dào) turns an attempt into a success: 找到 (find), 买到 (get hold of), 收到 (receive), 看到 (spot), 想到 (think of).
- The clearest pair is 找 (look for) vs 找到 (find) — say the payoff explicitly or you've only reported the effort.
- 看到 ≈ 看见, but 到 reaches further — into acquiring, receiving, and reaching a page/place/time.
- Negation: 没买到 (didn't), never 不; potential: 买不到 / 买得到 (impossible / possible).
- Keep 没找到 (didn't find) apart from 找不到 (can't find). See the resultative overview for the shared frame.

- 到 (dào): To / Arriving AtHSK 1 — 到 (dào) marks a destination or endpoint 'to / until / up to' — as a coverb before a motion verb (到北京去 'go to Beijing') and as a resultative complement after one (走到门口 'walk to the doorway', 找到 'find').
