Spoken to Written: Content Words

If function words are the loudest register signal, content words are the deepest. Nearly every common verb and quantity word in Chinese has a written-register partner, and together they form what is best thought of as the "Latinate" layer of the language — the exact counterpart to English's buy / purchase, help / assist, enough / sufficient, use / utilize. The written twin is very often a single classical character that now survives mainly inside compounds (购 in 购买, 予 in 给予, 毕 in 完毕). This page pairs the highest-frequency ones and tells you when each fits, building on the 口语 vs 书面语 axis.

The core pair table

完 (wán)毕 (bì) — 完毕finish
一样 (yíyàng)相同 (xiāngtóng)the same

Seeing the layer in action

The quickest way to feel the pattern is to watch a single colloquial sentence get lifted, word by word, into the written register. Every swap below is a row from the table above.

我现在住在上海。

wǒ xiànzài zhù zài Shànghǎi

I live in Shanghai now. (spoken/informal)

本人目前居住于上海。

běnrén mùqián jūzhù yú Shànghǎi

I currently reside in Shanghai. (written/formal) — 我→本人, 现在→目前, 住→居住, 在→于.

很多人想买这本书。

hěn duō rén xiǎng mǎi zhè běn shū

Lots of people want to buy this book. (spoken/informal)

众多读者欲购此书。

zhòngduō dúzhě yù gòu cǐ shū

Numerous readers wish to purchase this book. (written/formal) — 很多→众多, 想→欲, 买→购.

我觉得他说得对。

wǒ juéde tā shuō de duì

I think he's right. (spoken/informal)

我认为其观点正确。

wǒ rènwéi qí guāndiǎn zhèngquè

I hold that his view is correct. (written/formal) — 觉得→认为, 他的→其, 对→正确.

When each twin fits

The pairs are register-bound, but a few carry an extra shade of meaning you must respect. This is where a naive one-for-one swap goes wrong.

  • 看 → 观看 vs 阅读. 观看 is spectating (a match, a film, a performance); 阅读 is reading (text). You 看 a friend's photo — never 观看 it.
  • 想 → 思考 vs 欲. 思考 means think through / ponder (the deliberating sense of 想). 欲 means wish to (the desiring sense). They split what spoken 想 fuses.
  • 给 → 提供 vs 予. 提供 is provide (services, information); 予 (yǔ) survives almost only inside compounds (给予, 授予, 予以).
  • 觉得 → 认为. 认为 is a considered judgment; 觉得 a personal impression. The register lifts and the certainty firms up at the same time — the full three-way contrast with 以为 is on 觉得 vs 认为 vs 以为.

周末我们去看比赛吧。

zhōumò wǒmen qù kàn bǐsài ba

Let's go watch the match this weekend. (spoken/informal)

欢迎前来观看本届比赛。

huānyíng qiánlái guānkàn běn jiè bǐsài

You are welcome to come and watch this year's tournament. (written/formal) — 看→观看 fits because it's spectating.

💡
Most written twins live a double life: they are the formal word in prose and a productive compound-builder everywhere. You'd never say 我欲吃饭, but 欲 is completely normal inside 欲望 (desire) and 食欲 (appetite). When a lone classical character sounds wrong in speech, check whether you actually wanted its everyday compound.

Quantity and time: the easy wins

Two sub-groups are especially safe to drill because they almost never carry a meaning trap — only register. 很多 → 众多 / 大量 and 现在 → 目前 / 如今 appear constantly in news and reports.

这个工作需要很多人。

zhège gōngzuò xūyào hěn duō rén

This job needs a lot of people. (spoken/informal)

该项工作需要大量人手。

gāi xiàng gōngzuò xūyào dàliàng rénshǒu

This undertaking requires a large workforce. (written/formal) — 这个→该, 很多→大量.

现在很多年轻人不看电视了。

xiànzài hěn duō niánqīngrén bú kàn diànshì le

These days a lot of young people don't watch TV. (spoken/informal)

如今众多年轻人已不再收看电视。

rújīn zhòngduō niánqīngrén yǐ búzài shōukàn diànshì

Nowadays, many young people no longer watch television. (written/formal) — 现在→如今, 很多→众多, 不→不再, 看→收看.

💡
When an email leaves you unsure how far to formalize, reach for the disyllabic compound (使用, 提供, 居住, 购买) rather than the lone classical character (欲, 予, 毕). The compound is the safe middle register — correct in writing and inoffensive in careful speech — while the bare classical word is a further step that speech forbids outright.

Common Mistakes

1. Dropping a lone literary character into speech. The single most common slip — a bare 欲, 予, 毕, or 之 in conversation sounds like a costume drama.

❌ 我欲喝水。

Sounds like a historical epic — in speech say 我想喝水。 Keep 欲 for writing and compounds (食欲, 欲望).

✅ 我想喝水。

wǒ xiǎng hē shuǐ

I want a drink of water. (spoken/informal)

2. Ignoring the meaning shade and swapping blindly. 观看 is not a formal 看 for every object.

❌ 我观看了你发的照片。

Wrong sense — you don't 'spectate' a photo. Say 我看了你发的照片。

✅ 我看了你发的照片。

wǒ kàn le nǐ fā de zhàopiàn

I saw the photo you posted. (spoken/informal)

3. Using 众多 / 大量 in casual chat. They read like a press release. In speech, stay with 很多 / 好多.

4. Treating 认为 and 觉得 as pure register twins. 认为 also firms the claim into a considered stance; hedged personal feelings stay with 觉得 even in fairly formal speech.

5. Forgetting 毕 lives only in compounds. "Finished" as a standalone written verb is still 完成; 毕 shows up in 完毕, 毕业, 毕竟 — not as *我毕了.

Key Takeaways

  • Content words have a written "Latinate" layer: 看→观看/阅读, 想→思考/欲, 买→购买, 用→使用/采用, 给→提供/予, 住→居住, 帮→协助, 觉得→认为, 很多→众多/大量, 现在→目前/如今.
  • The written twin is often a single classical character living inside compounds (购, 予, 毕) — normal in compounds, wrong as a lone spoken verb.
  • Some pairs carry a meaning shade, not just register: 观看 = spectate, 阅读 = read text, 认为 = considered judgment. Don't swap blind.
  • Quantity and time twins (众多/大量, 目前/如今) are the safest to drill — register only, no trap.
  • The signature error is a lone literary character in speech — reach for its everyday compound instead.
