而已 (éryǐ) is a clause-final particle meaning "merely, only, nothing more than that." It scales a statement down to its minimum and seals it off: whatever came before is all there is — don't expect more. It is a very close synonym of 罢了, and the two often swap freely, but 而已 sits a notch higher in register — it belongs to considered speech, essays, reports, and reflective prose more than to casual chat. English reaches for "…and that's it," "…nothing more," or a stressed "only."
而已: scaling a statement down to nothing more
The particle is built from two classical morphemes: 而 (ér, the connective "and / and then") plus 已 (yǐ, classical "to stop, to cease" — the same 已 in 已经 yǐjīng "already"). So 而已 literally reads "…and then it stops" — the matter ends here, there is nothing beyond it. That is the exact mirror of 罢了 (罢 = stop, 了 = completed), which is why the two mean the same thing. Like 罢了, 而已 loves a "merely" opener up front: 只是 (zhǐshì), 不过 (búguò), or 仅 / 仅仅 (jǐn / jǐnjǐn).
这只是我的个人看法而已,你不必太在意。
zhè zhǐshì wǒ de gèrén kànfǎ éryǐ, nǐ búbì tài zàiyì
This is merely my personal opinion — you needn't take it too seriously. (neutral, measured)
他不过是随便说说而已,别放在心上。
tā búguò shì suíbiàn shuōshuo éryǐ, bié fàng zài xīn shàng
He was just talking casually, that's all — don't take it to heart. (informal-to-neutral)
我们只是普通朋友而已。
wǒmen zhǐshì pǔtōng péngyou éryǐ
We're just ordinary friends, nothing more. (neutral)
这不过是冰山一角而已,真正的问题还在下面。
zhè búguò shì bīngshān yì jiǎo éryǐ, zhēnzhèng de wèntí hái zài xiàmiàn
This is merely the tip of the iceberg — the real problems lie below. (neutral, essayistic)
我只是尽了本分而已,谈不上什么功劳。
wǒ zhǐshì jìn le běnfèn éryǐ, tán bù shàng shénme gōngláo
I merely did my duty — it's hardly worth calling a merit. (formal, modest)
而已 vs 罢了: the register split
Meaning-wise they overlap almost completely. The reliable difference is tone of the writing: 而已 sounds a touch more literary and composed, so it's the default in formal reports, academic prose, and polished speech; 罢了 sits a step closer to everyday conversation and often carries a lightly dismissive shrug. When in doubt in writing, 而已 is the safer pick; in relaxed speech, either works.
| Feature | 而已 (éryǐ) | 罢了 (bàle) |
|---|---|---|
| Register | more written / literary (formal) | neutral, common in speech (informal–neutral) |
| Flavor | factual "nothing more" | often a dismissive "no big deal" |
| Pairs with | 只是 / 不过 / 仅 | 只是 / 不过 / 无非 |
| Fixed phrases | 仅此而已, 如此而已 | — |
报告里的数字只是估算而已,并不精确。
bàogào lǐ de shùzì zhǐshì gūsuàn éryǐ, bìng bù jīngquè
The figures in the report are merely estimates, not precise. (formal, written register)
Fixed expressions: 仅此而已 and 如此而已
而已 is welded into two set phrases worth memorizing whole. 仅此而已 (jǐn cǐ éryǐ) = "just this and nothing more"; 如此而已 (rúcǐ éryǐ) = "that's all there is to it." Both are common in polished speech and writing, and both are ready-made ways to say "the list ends here."
我能做的,仅此而已。
wǒ néng zuò de, jǐn cǐ éryǐ
This is all I'm able to do — nothing more. (neutral-formal)
事情的经过就是如此而已,没有什么内幕。
shìqing de jīngguò jiùshì rúcǐ éryǐ, méiyǒu shénme nèimù
That's simply how it went — there's no hidden story. (neutral)
These frozen forms are part of the classical-particle residue that survives into modern written Chinese; the broader family is surveyed on the classical particle residue page.
Common Mistakes
1. Confusing 而已 with the connective 而. 而 alone is "and / yet / but" and joins clauses; 而已 is the two-syllable final particle. They are different words.
❌ 他很聪明而,学习也努力。
Wrong — the connective is 而且 (érqiě, 'moreover') or just 而; a lone 而 can't end a clause here, and it has nothing to do with 而已.
✅ 他不过是聪明一点而已。
tā búguò shì cōngmíng yìdiǎn éryǐ
He's just a bit clever, that's all. — 而已 as the 'merely' final particle.
2. Adding 了 after 而已. 而已 is already complete; no aspect particle follows it.
❌ 这只是个玩笑而已了。
Wrong — 而已 does not take a following 了; the particle stands alone.
✅ 这只是个玩笑而已。
zhè zhǐshì gè wánxiào éryǐ
This is just a joke, nothing more. — 而已 ends the clause cleanly.
3. Stacking 而已 with 罢了. They mean the same thing; using both is redundant.
❌ 他随便说说而已罢了。
Redundant — 而已 and 罢了 both mean 'that's all.' Keep one.
✅ 他随便说说而已。
tā suíbiàn shuōshuo éryǐ
He was just talking casually, that's all. — a single downplayer.
4. Using 而已 to emphasize or exaggerate. Like 罢了, 而已 only scales down. Pairing it with a boast is self-contradictory.
❌ 这是巨大的突破而已。
Contradictory — 而已 minimizes, so it clashes with 'huge breakthrough.' Drop 而已.
✅ 这只是一小步而已。
zhè zhǐshì yì xiǎo bù éryǐ
This is merely a small step. — 而已 fits a deliberately modest statement.
Key Takeaways
- 而已 (éryǐ) = "merely, only, nothing more than that" — it scales a statement down and closes it.
- It is the more written / formal twin of 罢了; the two overlap, but 而已 suits reports and polished prose.
- Structure: 只是 / 不过 / 仅 … 而已 — a "merely" opener plus the 而已 seal.
- Learn the set phrases whole: 仅此而已 (just this and nothing more) and 如此而已 (that's all there is to it).
- Don't confuse it with the connective 而, don't add 了 after it, don't double it with 罢了, and never use it to emphasize.
