半 (bàn) means "half," and the single most useful thing to know about it is that it behaves grammatically like a number. Just as 一 (one) needs a measure word before a noun (一个苹果), so does 半: 半个苹果 (bàn ge píngguǒ) "half an apple," 半瓶水 (bàn píng shuǐ) "half a bottle of water," 半个小时 (bàn ge xiǎoshí) "half an hour." Once you see 半 as "a quantity, namely one-half," the whole grammar falls out of what you already know about the general measure word 个 and its siblings — you just slot 半 into the number position. The one twist is the "one and a half" pattern, where 半 jumps to the other side of the measure word.
半 = half a unit: 半 + Measure Word + Noun
To say "half a(n) _," put 半 in front, exactly where a number would go: 半 + Measure Word + Noun. The measure word is not optional — it's required for the same reason it's required after any number.
我早上只吃了半个包子就出门了。
wǒ zǎoshang zhǐ chī le bàn ge bāozi jiù chūmén le
I only ate half a bun this morning before heading out. (informal) — 半个包子, half a bun.
瓶子里还有半瓶水,你先喝吧。
píngzi li hái yǒu bàn píng shuǐ, nǐ xiān hē ba
There's still half a bottle of water — drink it. (informal) — 半瓶水, half a bottle.
我等了半个小时,他才慢悠悠地来。
wǒ děng le bàn ge xiǎoshí, tā cái mànyōuyōu de lái
I waited half an hour before he came sauntering in. (informal) — 半个小时, half an hour.
再给我半碗饭就够了。
zài gěi wǒ bàn wǎn fàn jiù gòu le
Just half a bowl more of rice is enough for me. (informal) — 半碗饭, half a bowl.
Time words that are their own measure
A handful of time nouns — 天 (day), 年 (year), 分钟 (minute) — are themselves measure words, so 半 attaches directly with no extra classifier: 半天 (half a day), 半年 (half a year), 半分钟 (half a minute). By contrast, 小时 (hour) is a noun that takes 个, so it's 半个小时. Both patterns are correct; the difference is whether the time word carries its own measure.
这件事我想了半天,也没想明白。
zhè jiàn shì wǒ xiǎng le bàntiān, yě méi xiǎng míngbai
I thought about this for ages and still couldn't figure it out. (informal) — 半天 attaches directly; here it also idiomatically means 'a good while.'
还差半个月就放假了。
hái chà bàn ge yuè jiù fàngjià le
It's only half a month until the holidays. (informal) — 月 takes 个, so 半个月.
One and a half: Number + Measure Word + 半
Here is the twist. For "one and a half," "two and a half," and so on, 半 moves to after the measure word: Number + Measure Word + 半 (+ Noun). The whole units come first, then the leftover half.
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 半 + MW + N | 半个小时 | half an hour |
| Number + MW + 半 (+ N) | 一个半小时 | an hour and a half |
| Number + MW + 半 (+ N) | 三个半月 | three and a half months |
| self-measuring time + 半 | 一天半 / 三年半 | a day and a half / three and a half years |
| clock time | 两点半 | half past two |
这部电影差不多有一个半小时。
zhè bù diànyǐng chàbuduō yǒu yí ge bàn xiǎoshí
This movie is roughly an hour and a half. (informal) — 一个半小时, one whole hour plus a half.
我们在那儿住了三个半月。
wǒmen zài nàr zhù le sān ge bàn yuè
We lived there for three and a half months. (neutral) — 三个半月, three months and a half.
我在国外待了一年半才回来。
wǒ zài guówài dāi le yì nián bàn cái huílái
I was abroad for a year and a half before coming back. (informal) — 年 is self-measuring, so 一年半, half after the whole.
现在是两点半,我们该走了。
xiànzài shì liǎng diǎn bàn, wǒmen gāi zǒu le
It's half past two now — we should get going. (informal) — 两点半, 半 after 点 for the clock.
半 vs 一半 — "half a unit" versus "half of it"
Don't confuse quantifier 半 with the noun 一半 (yíbàn). 半 means "half a(n) [unit]" and needs a measure word and a noun after it. 一半 means "one half / 50% — half of it," a standalone fraction that refers back to a known whole. You eat half an apple (半个苹果), but you eat half of this apple (这个苹果的一半 / 吃了一半).
这个苹果我吃了一半,剩下的给你。
zhè ge píngguǒ wǒ chī le yíbàn, shèngxià de gěi nǐ
I ate half of this apple; the rest is for you. (informal) — 一半 = half of the specific apple.
蛋糕我们一人一半,怎么样?
dàngāo wǒmen yì rén yíbàn, zěnmeyàng?
Let's split the cake, half each — sound good? (informal) — 一半 = a half-portion each.
Common Mistakes
1. Dropping the measure word. 半 is a quantity, so it needs a classifier just like a number does.
❌ 我吃了半苹果。
Incorrect — 半 needs a measure word: 半个苹果.
✅ 我吃了半个苹果。
wǒ chī le bàn ge píngguǒ
I ate half an apple. — 半个, with the measure word.
2. Misplacing 半 in "one and a half." For "an hour and a half," 半 goes after the measure word; 一半个小时 means something else entirely.
❌ 我等了一半个小时。
Incorrect — 一半个 is wrong for '1.5 hours'; it's 一个半小时 (半 after the MW).
✅ 我等了一个半小时。
wǒ děng le yí ge bàn xiǎoshí
I waited an hour and a half. — 一个半小时.
3. Confusing 半 with 一半. For "half of it," use the noun 一半, not the bare quantifier 半.
❌ 苹果我吃了半。
Incorrect — for 'I ate half (of it)' use 一半: 苹果我吃了一半.
✅ 苹果我吃了一半。
píngguǒ wǒ chī le yíbàn
I ate half of the apple. — 一半 = half of the whole.
4. Using 二 instead of 两 with 半. Before a measure word, "two" is 两 — including in "two and a half."
❌ 我们聊了二个半小时。
Incorrect — before a measure word 'two' is 两: 两个半小时.
✅ 我们聊了两个半小时。
wǒmen liáo le liǎng ge bàn xiǎoshí
We chatted for two and a half hours. — 两个半小时.
Key Takeaways
- 半 behaves like a number, so "half a _" is 半 + Measure Word + Noun: 半个苹果, 半瓶水, 半个小时.
- Self-measuring time words take 半 directly: 半天, 半年, 半分钟 — but 小时 needs 个 (半个小时).
- For "one and a half," 半 flips to after the measure word: 一个半小时, 三个半月, 一年半; clock "half past" is 两点半.
- 半 ≠ 一半: 半 = "half a unit" (needs a MW); 一半 = "half of it," a standalone fraction.
- Use 两, not 二, before a measure word: 两个半小时, not 二个半小时.

- 半 (Half)HSK 1 — 半 (bàn) is 'half' as a quantity — it acts like a number and takes a measure word (半个, 半年). Its noun cousin 一半 (yíbàn) means 'half of it, 50%' and stands alone. Getting the two apart is the whole game.
- The Default 个HSK 1 — 个 (gè, usually neutral-toned ge) is the general-purpose measure word — the safe fallback when you don't know the specific classifier — and it correctly covers people, many everyday objects, and abstract nouns; the goal is to graduate to specific classifiers while keeping 个 for the nouns that genuinely take it.
- Telling Time (点 / 分 / 刻 / 半)HSK 1 — Clock time is built from 点 (the hour), 分 (minutes), 刻 (quarter-hours), and 半 (half): 三点半 is 3:30, 三点一刻 is 3:15, 差五分八点 is 7:55. Watch the one trap — 'two o'clock' is 两点, not 二点.
- 几 + MW (Approximate / How Many)HSK 1 — 几 (jǐ) plus a measure word means both 'how many?' in questions and 'a few / several' in statements — 几个人? (how many people?) and 我有几本书 (I have a few books) — always keeping its classifier, exactly like a number.
