只有…才… is the stern counterpart to the sufficient 只要…就. Where 只要 says a condition is enough, 只有 says it is necessary — the result happens only under this condition and under no other. 只有多练习,才能学好中文: "only by practising a lot can you master Chinese," with the strong implication that nothing else will get you there. The result clause takes 才 (cái), the "only then / not until" adverb — the hard-won opposite of the ready 就. If you can nail 就 vs 才 here, you own the whole sufficient-versus-necessary system.
只有 marks "the indispensable condition"
The frame is 只有 + [condition],(subject) + 才 + [result]. 只 "only" + 有 "there is" gives "only in the case that there is…," and 才 in the result signals that the outcome arrives only on that condition — no shortcut, no earlier arrival.

Only by practising a lot can you master Chinese.
只有亲眼看到,我才会相信。
zhǐyǒu qīnyǎn kàndào, wǒ cái huì xiāngxìn

只有满十八岁,才能考驾照。
zhǐyǒu mǎn shíbā suì, cái néng kǎo jiàzhào
Only when you turn eighteen can you take the driving test.
Because 才 is an adverb, it follows the subject of the result clause and precedes the verb — where the subject is stated, 才 lands right after it.
这个问题只有他才知道答案。
zhège wèntí zhǐyǒu tā cái zhīdào dá'àn
Only he knows the answer to this question.
只有努力工作,才买得起房子。

The pattern lends itself to proverbial, reflective statements, where the "not until" force of 才 is felt strongly:
人只有失去了,才懂得珍惜。
rén zhǐyǒu shīqù le, cái dǒngde zhēnxī
Only after losing something do people learn to cherish it. (proverbial)
只有相信自己,才能做得更好。

Only by believing in yourself can you do better.
The mirror: necessary (只有…才) vs sufficient (只要…就)
Read this table as the reverse image of the one on the 只要…就 page. The words are parallel; the logic is opposite; the pivot is 才 vs 就.
| Pattern | Condition is… | Claim | Pivot adverb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 只有 X,才 Y | necessary | no X, no Y — X is indispensable | 才 ("only then") |
| 只要 X,就 Y | sufficient | X alone brings Y — other paths may exist | 就 ("readily then") |
The adverbs carry the whole contrast. 才 is grudging and late — "only then, and not a moment sooner"; 就 is eager and early — "and then, right away." That is why 才 pairs with the necessary 只有 and 就 pairs with the sufficient 只要. The deeper study of the two adverbs lives at 就 vs 才.
Its negative sibling is 除非 "unless," which frames the same necessity from the other side — 只有你去 ("only if you go") equals 除非你去 ("unless you go, …"). See 除非…否则.
Common Mistakes
1. Pairing 只有 with 就. A necessary condition takes 才; 就 belongs to the sufficient 只要.
❌ 只有努力,就能成功。
Wrong pairing — 只有 (necessary) takes 才, not 就: 只有努力,才能成功。
✅ 只有努力,才能成功。
zhǐyǒu nǔlì, cái néng chénggōng
Only through hard work can one succeed.
2. Using 只有…才 when you mean a sufficient condition. If the condition is merely enough, 只有 over-claims necessity — use 只要…就.
❌ 只有便宜,我才买。
If you mean 'cheap is enough to make me buy,' this is too strong — it says you buy ONLY when it's cheap. For 'cheap is enough,' use 只要便宜我就买。
✅ 只要便宜,我就买。
zhǐyào piányi, wǒ jiù mǎi
As long as it's cheap, I'll buy it. (sufficient condition)
3. Dropping 才 from the result. The necessary-condition result is incomplete without its 才.
❌ 只有多练习,能学好。
Incomplete — the result needs 才: 只有多练习,才能学好。
✅ 只有多练习,才能学好。
zhǐyǒu duō liànxí, cái néng xué hǎo
Only by practising a lot can you learn it well.
4. Putting 才 before the subject. 才 follows the subject of the result clause and precedes the verb.
❌ 只有他同意,才这件事能办。
Word order — 才 comes after the subject: 这件事才能办, not 才这件事。
✅ 只有他同意,这件事才能办。
zhǐyǒu tā tóngyì, zhè jiàn shì cái néng bàn
Only if he agrees can this be done.
Key Takeaways
- 只有…才… states a necessary condition: without it, the result cannot happen.
- The result clause takes 才 (after the subject, before the verb) — "only then, not before."
- It is the exact mirror of the sufficient 只要…就; the pivot 才 vs 就 flips the logic.
- English "only if / only by / only when" points to 只有…才; "as long as" points to 只要…就.
- Its negative twin is 除非 "unless": 只有 X ≈ 除非 X.

- 只要…就… (As Long As…Then…)HSK 4 — 只要…就… (zhǐyào…jiù) states a SUFFICIENT condition — one thing is enough to guarantee the result: 只要努力,就能成功 'as long as you work hard, you can succeed'. It is the exact mirror of 只有…才 (a necessary condition).
- 除非…否则/才… (Unless…)HSK 5 — 除非…否则/不然/才… (chúfēi…fǒuzé/bùrán/cái) means 'unless…' — it names the sole exception, then pairs either with 否则/不然 ('otherwise' + the default outcome) or with 才 ('only then'). Logically 除非 X equals 只有 X.
- 才 (Only Then / Not Until / Merely)HSK 3 — 才 (cái) is 就's mirror image: 'not until / later than expected', 'only then / only if', and belittling 'merely' — all carrying the attitude of later, harder, less than you'd think, and typically taking no 了.
- 就 vs 才 (Early/Easy vs Late/Hard)HSK 3 — The classic minimal pair: 就 (jiù) means sooner, easier, and usually takes 了; 才 (cái) means later, harder, and drops 了 — 他八点就来了 'as early as eight' versus 他八点才来 'not until eight'.
