除非… (Unless…)

除非 (chúfēi) means "unless," and it is the negative face of the necessary-condition 只有…才. The characters read literally as 除 "except / remove" + 非 "not," giving "except in the case that not…" — i.e. "the only exception is…." 除非你去 marks going as the sole circumstance under which the outcome changes. What trips learners up is that 除非 almost always needs a partner in the second clause, and there are two different partners with two different logics: 否则/不然 ("otherwise," followed by the default outcome) or ("only then," followed by the desired result). Choosing the right partner — and getting the polarity of 否则 right — is the whole skill.

Two frames, same logic

Because "unless" can be re-stated two ways, 除非 attaches to two different second clauses. The net meaning is identical; what differs is whether the second clause states the desired result (with 才) or the default outcome that happens without the condition (with 否则/不然).

FrameSecond clause states…Example
除非 X,才 Ythe desired result Y, reached only via X除非你去,我才去
Zthe default Z that happens without X除非你去,否则我不去

除非你去,我才去 ("only if you go will I go") and 除非你去,否则我不去 ("unless you go, otherwise I won't go") say the same thing from opposite ends. The 才 version points forward to the good outcome; the 否则 version points to what you'll be stuck with if the condition fails. This equivalence is why 除非 X ≈ 只有 X: both make X the indispensable condition.

chúfēi nǐ dàoqiàn, fǒuzé wǒ bú huì yuánliàng nǐ

Unless you apologize, I won't forgive you.

chúfēi nǐ xiān fù qián, wǒ cái fā huò

Only if you pay first will I ship it.

chúfēi xià dà yǔ, fǒuzé bǐsài zhàocháng jìnxíng

Unless it rains heavily, the match goes ahead as usual.

zhè jiàn shì chúfēi tā tóngyì, fǒuzé zuò bù chéng

Unless he agrees, this can't be done.

💡
Pick your partner by what you want to spotlight. Ending on the good result you're withholding? Use 除非… Ending on the bad default that looms without the condition? Both are correct; they just aim the sentence differently.

The "otherwise" partner comes in three register-graded forms. All introduce the outcome that follows if the condition is not met, so the clause after them describes the world without the exception.

WordPinyinRegister
否则fǒuzéneutral / formal — writing and careful speech
不然ránneutral / informal — everyday speech
要不然yàoburáninformal — the most casual, spoken

chúfēi nǐ qīnzì qù, bùrán tā bú huì dāying

Unless you go in person, he won't agree.

chúfēi wàn bù dé yǐ, wǒ bú huì xiàng biérén jiè qián

Unless it's absolutely unavoidable, I won't borrow money from others.

wǒ bú huì qù de, chúfēi nǐ péi wǒ yìqǐ

I won't go — unless you come with me.

否则/不然 also stand alone, without 除非, meaning simply "otherwise" after any statement:

你得快点儿,否则赶不上火车。

nǐ děi kuài diǎnr, fǒuzé gǎn bú shàng huǒchē

You'd better hurry, otherwise you'll miss the train.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving 除非 without a partner. 除非 almost always needs 否则/不然 or 才 in the second clause.

chúfēi nǐ dàoqiàn, fǒuzé wǒ bú huì yuánliàng nǐ

Unless you apologize, I won't forgive you.

2. Pairing 除非 with 就. Its partners are 才 and 否则/不然 — never the sufficient-condition 就.

chúfēi nǐ qù, wǒ cái qù

Only if you go will I go.

3. Getting the 否则 polarity backwards. 否则 introduces what happens without the condition, so that outcome must be the negative default, not the reward.

Illogical — 否则 states the outcome WITHOUT effort, which should be failure: 除非你努力,否则你会失败。

chúfēi nǐ nǔlì, fǒuzé nǐ huì shībài

Unless you work hard, you'll fail.

4. Mixing both frames at once. Use either 除非…才 or 除非…否则 — combining 否则 with 才 in one sentence garbles the logic.

Don't blend the frames — pick one: 除非你去,我才去 (result) or 除非你去,否则我不去 (default)。

chúfēi nǐ qù, wǒ cái qù

Only if you go will I go.

Key Takeaways

  • 除非 means "unless" and marks the sole exception; logically 除非 X ≈ 只有 X (a necessary condition).
  • It pairs with (points to the desired result) or 否则/不然 (points to the default outcome without the condition).
  • 否则 (formal) / 不然 (neutral) / 要不然 (casual) grade by register; all mean "otherwise."
  • 否则 states what happens without the condition — keep that outcome as the negative default.
  • Never pair 除非 with 就, and never mix 否则 and 才 in the same sentence.
