就 and 才 as the 'Then' Pivots

Many Chinese correlatives split a sentence into two halves: a condition clause and a result clause. What English handles with "then" (or with nothing at all), Chinese handles with a small pivot adverb that opens the result: (jiù) or (cái). These are the same two words treated as a minimal pair on the 就 vs 才 page; here the focus is narrower — their structural role as the hinge between the two clauses. The choice is never cosmetic. 就 says the result follows readily, soon, as a matter of course; 才 says it arrives only, and reluctantly, under a strict bar. Picking one over the other rewires the meaning of the whole sentence.

The pivot slot: 就/才 open the result clause

Both words are adverbs, so they don't sit at the head of the result clause like an English conjunction — they follow the result clause's subject and come right before its verb. The condition clause leads (只要…, 如果…, 只有…), and the pivot is the first thing you hit inside the result.

Condition clauseResult clause
只要有钱(subject) + verb
只有有钱(subject) + verb

只要有钱就行。

zhǐyào yǒu qián jiù xíng

As long as you've got money, it's fine. (a low, easily-met bar — 就)

只有有钱才行。

zhǐyǒu yǒu qián cái xíng

Only if you've got money is it OK. (a strict, indispensable bar — 才)

Same clauses, one pivot swapped, and the logic flips from "money is enough" to "nothing but money will do." That flip is the whole point of this page.

就 — the "readily then" pivot

就 pairs with conditions that are sufficient, hypothetical, or immediate — the result follows easily and on time. Three high-frequency frames all take 就:

  • 只要…就… "as long as… (then)" — a sufficient condition
  • 如果…就… / …的话,就… "if… (then)" — a hypothetical
  • 一…就… "as soon as… (then)" — immediate sequence

如果下雨,我们就不去了。

rúguǒ xià yǔ, wǒmen jiù bú qù le

If it rains, then we won't go. (informal) — 就 opens the result after the subject 我们.

你只要说一声,我就来。

nǐ zhǐyào shuō yì shēng, wǒ jiù lái

Just say the word and I'll come. (informal) — 就 follows the result-clause subject 我.

他一下班就回家。

tā yí xiàbān jiù huí jiā

The moment he gets off work he heads home. (neutral) — 一…就 marks immediate sequence.

我一到就给你打电话。

wǒ yí dào jiù gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà

I'll call you the moment I arrive. (informal)

For the "as long as" frame in full, see 只要…就; for "if… then," see 如果…就.

才 — the "only then" pivot

才 pairs with conditions that are necessary and demanding — the result comes only on that condition, and the pivot carries a grudging "not before this" tone. Two frames take 才:

  • 只有…才… "only if / only by… (then)" — a necessary condition
  • 除非…才… "only in the case that… (unless…, …not)" — the sole exception

只有努力,才能成功。

zhǐyǒu nǔlì, cái néng chénggōng

Only through hard work can you succeed. (neutral) — 才 opens the result of a necessary condition.

只有他同意,这件事才能办。

zhǐyǒu tā tóngyì, zhè jiàn shì cái néng bàn

Only if he agrees can this go ahead. (neutral) — 才 sits after the subject 这件事, before 能办.

除非你答应,我才去。

chúfēi nǐ dāying, wǒ cái qù

I'll only go if you promise. (informal) — 除非…才 frames the sole condition under which I go.

💡
Because 就/才 are adverbs, they go after the result-clause subject and before its verb — 我就来 / 这件事才能办, never 就我来 / 才这件事能办. Find the subject of the second clause first, then drop the pivot in right after it.

The frames pair up: sufficient (就) vs necessary (才)

The cleanest way to hold all of this is one grid. The pivot column is the decision that matters — everything else falls out of "is this condition merely enough (就) or genuinely indispensable (才)?"

Condition frameCondition is…PivotReading
只要 X,就 Ysufficient (enough)X alone is all it takes
如果 X,就 Yhypotheticalif X, then (readily) Y
一 X,就 Yimmediateas soon as X, then Y
只有 X,才 Ynecessary (indispensable)only X can bring Y
除非 X,才 Ynecessary (sole exception)Y happens only given X
💡
One test settles the pivot: ask "does the result depend on this and nothing else?" If yes → necessary → 才 (只有/除非). If instead "this one thing is enough, other paths may exist" → sufficient → 就 (只要/如果/一). The deeper attitude split — early/easy vs late/hard — lives on the 就 vs 才 page.

Common Mistakes

1. Pairing 只有 with 就. A necessary condition takes 才; 就 belongs to the sufficient 只要.

❌ 只有努力,就能成功。

Wrong pairing — 只有 (necessary) opens with 才: 只有努力,才能成功.

✅ 只有努力,才能成功。

zhǐyǒu nǔlì, cái néng chénggōng

Only through hard work can you succeed.

2. Pairing 只要 with 才. A sufficient condition takes 就; using 才 over-claims necessity.

❌ 只要有钱,才行。

Wrong pairing — 只要 (sufficient) opens with 就: 只要有钱就行.

✅ 只要有钱就行。

zhǐyào yǒu qián jiù xíng

As long as you've got money, it's fine.

3. Putting the pivot before the subject. 就/才 follow the result-clause subject and precede its verb.

❌ 只有他同意,才这件事能办。

Word order — 才 comes after the subject: 这件事才能办, not 才这件事.

✅ 只有他同意,这件事才能办。

zhǐyǒu tā tóngyì, zhè jiàn shì cái néng bàn

Only if he agrees can this go ahead.

4. Dropping the pivot entirely. The result clause of these frames feels unfinished without its 就 or 才.

❌ 只要你努力,能成功。

Incomplete — the result needs the pivot 就: 只要你努力,就能成功.

✅ 只要你努力,就能成功。

zhǐyào nǐ nǔlì, jiù néng chénggōng

As long as you work hard, you'll succeed.

Key Takeaways

  • In correlatives, 就 and 才 open the result clause — after the result's subject, before its verb.
  • = sufficient / hypothetical / immediate (只要…就, 如果…就, 一…就): the result follows readily.
  • = necessary / sole-exception (只有…才, 除非…才): the result comes only under a strict bar.
  • The pairings are fixed: 只要/如果/一 → 就, 只有/除非 → 才. Crossing them is ungrammatical.
  • Test the condition: enough (就) or indispensable (才)? For the adverbs' fuller nuance, see 就 vs 才.
