就 and 才 are the two little adverbs that quietly editorialize on your sentences. Neither has a tidy English translation, because both sit near "then" while pointing in opposite directions. 就 says an event came early, quickly, easily, or just as expected — it happened sooner or more readily than some baseline. 才 says an event came late, slowly, with difficulty, or only under a condition — it happened later or more grudgingly than the baseline. The decisive thing to grasp is that neither word reports the objective clock: they report how the speaker feels about the timing or the effort. The very same "seven o'clock" is impressively early with 就 and disappointingly late with 才. This page is the decision tool; for the full range of each, see 就 and its senses and 才 and its senses.
The decision test: sooner/easier, or later/harder?
| The event felt… | Adverb | Reads as | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| early / quick / easy / as expected | 就 (jiù) | "already / right away / just" | 七点就来了 (came as early as 7) |
| late / slow / hard / only-then | 才 (cái) | "not until / only after" | 九点才来 (didn't come until 9) |
就: sooner, easier, as expected
就 marks readiness and speed. It pairs happily with a sentence-final 了 (the event is realized and done). Use it for arriving early, catching on fast, or "as soon as X, then Y."
他今天七点就到公司了。
tā jīntiān qī diǎn jiù dào gōngsī le
He got to the office as early as seven today. (neutral) — early, so 就 (and 了).
老师一讲我就懂了。
lǎoshī yì jiǎng wǒ jiù dǒng le
I got it the moment the teacher explained. (informal) — quick and easy, so 就.
她五岁就会背唐诗了。
tā wǔ suì jiù huì bèi Tángshī le
She could recite Tang poems already at five. (neutral) — impressively early: 就.
才: later, harder, only-then
才 marks lateness, slowness, and the "only after considerable effort/condition" feel. Crucially, it usually rejects the sentence-final 了 — it dwells on the shortfall rather than the completion.
他昨天半夜才回家。
tā zuótiān bànyè cái huí jiā
He didn't get home until the middle of the night yesterday. (neutral) — late, so 才 (no 了).
我解释了半天,他才明白。
wǒ jiěshì le bàntiān, tā cái míngbai
Only after I'd explained for ages did he get it. (informal) — hard-won, so 才.
他都三十了才开始学开车。
tā dōu sānshí le cái kāishǐ xué kāichē
He didn't start learning to drive until he was thirty. (informal) — later than expected: 才.
Same clock, opposite feeling
Here is the proof that these adverbs report attitude, not time. Freeze the clock at six o'clock and swap the adverb — the hour doesn't move, but the whole judgment flips.
他六点就到了,是第一个。
tā liù diǎn jiù dào le, shì dì-yī ge
He arrived as early as six — the first one there. (neutral) — six reads early: 就.
约的五点,他六点才到。
yuē de wǔ diǎn, tā liù diǎn cái dào
We agreed on five, and he didn't turn up until six. (informal) — six reads late: 才.
The conditional frames: 只要…就 vs 只有…才
The two adverbs anchor a matched pair of conditional patterns, and mixing them changes the logic. 只要…就 = "as long as X, then Y" (X is enough). 只有…才 = "only if X will Y" (X is the sole route). One is generous, the other exclusive.
只要你努力,就一定能进步。
zhǐyào nǐ nǔlì, jiù yídìng néng jìnbù
As long as you put in the effort, you're bound to improve. (neutral) — X is sufficient: 只要…就.
只有多练习,才能真正学会。
zhǐyǒu duō liànxí, cái néng zhēnzhèng xuéhuì
Only by practising a lot can you truly master it. (neutral) — X is the sole route: 只有…才.
Common Mistakes
1. Using 就 where you mean "not until." Late arrival, told with regret or complaint, needs 才.
❌ 约好八点,他十点就来。
Contradictory — 'as early as ten' clashes with a broken 8 o'clock appointment; lateness takes 才: 他十点才来.
✅ 约好八点,他十点才来。
yuēhǎo bā diǎn, tā shí diǎn cái lái
We agreed on eight, and he didn't show up until ten. — 才 for the lateness.
2. Adding 了 to a 才 clause. 才 dwells on the shortfall and normally drops the sentence-final 了.
❌ 他昨天很晚才睡了。
Wrong — a 才 clause resists the completion 了: 他昨天很晚才睡.
✅ 他昨天很晚才睡。
tā zuótiān hěn wǎn cái shuì
He didn't go to sleep until very late yesterday. — no 了 with 才.
3. Using 才 for something quick or easy. Fast, effortless catching-on is 就.
❌ 这个道理一听才懂。
Wrong — 'understood right away' is quick, so 就: 一听就懂.
✅ 这个道理一听就懂。
zhège dàolǐ yì tīng jiù dǒng
You get this point the moment you hear it. — 就 for the easy grasp.
4. Using 才 for a friendly "if… then." "I'll call you when I'm free" is the generous 只要…就 logic; 才 turns it grudging ("only if").
❌ 我有时间才给你打电话。(本想说
This sounds grudging — 'I'll only call if I happen to have time.' For a warm 'I'll call when I'm free', use 就: 我有时间就给你打电话.
✅ 我有时间就给你打电话。
wǒ yǒu shíjiān jiù gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà
I'll give you a call when I have time. — 就 for the friendly promise.
Key Takeaways
- 就 = sooner / quicker / easier / as expected (七点就来了; 一说就懂). Pairs naturally with 了.
- 才 = later / slower / harder / only-then (九点才来; 三十才学开车). Normally drops the sentence-final 了.
- Neither reports the clock — both report the speaker's judgment against a baseline. The same "six o'clock" is early with 就, late with 才.
- The conditional pair splits the same way: 只要…就 = "X is enough"; 只有…才 = "X is the only way."
- Reversing them flips your meaning, and a friendly "if… then" is 就, not 才.
