正在 / 在 / 正 (Progressive)

To say an action is happening right now — the equivalent of English "-ing" in "he's calling" — Chinese places one of (zài), 正在 (zhèngzài), or (zhèng) directly before the verb, and often adds a soft (ne) at the end. This is worth stating clearly for English speakers: it is aspect, not tense. The markers say nothing about past, present, or future — they say the action is in progress at whatever reference time the sentence sets. 我正在吃饭 can mean "I'm eating right now" today or "I was eating" when you called last night; the time comes from context, and 正在 only supplies the "in the middle of it" part. For the full aspect treatment see the progressive with 在.

The three markers and 呢

All three go in the same pre-verb slot, but they carry slightly different weight. is the plain, neutral progressive. 正在 adds emphasis on this very moment — "right in the middle of." highlights that the action coincides with something else, and usually needs a 着 or 呢 or an object to lean on. The final is a soft particle that reinforces the ongoing feel; it is optional but extremely common in speech.

正 … 呢/着"just then, coinciding"他正睡觉呢everyday
… 呢 (alone)light progressive他吃饭呢informal, spoken

他正在开会,等一下再打给他。

tā zhèngzài kāihuì, děng yíxià zài dǎ gěi tā

He's in a meeting right now — call him back in a bit. (neutral)

我在做饭呢,你先坐。

wǒ zài zuò fàn ne, nǐ xiān zuò

I'm cooking — have a seat first. (informal)

你在干什么呢?

nǐ zài gàn shénme ne?

What are you doing? (informal)

别吵,孩子在睡觉。

bié chǎo, háizi zài shuìjiào

Don't be noisy — the kid is sleeping. (informal)

Notice in the first example that the ongoing action is 正在开会, while the future callback uses — two different 再/在 words that sound alike but do entirely different jobs.

呢 alone, and 正…着…呢

In casual speech the progressive can rest on by itself, with no 在 at all — 他吃饭呢 "he's eating." And 正 often teams up with a durative and a final 呢 to paint a vivid "just at that moment" scene:

——你吃饭了吗?——在吃呢。

—— nǐ chī fàn le ma? —— zài chī ne

— Have you eaten? — I'm eating right now. (informal)

外面正下着大雨呢,别出去了。

wàimiàn zhèng xià zhe dà yǔ ne, bié chūqù le

It's pouring outside right now — don't go out. (informal)

我打电话的时候,他正在洗澡。

wǒ dǎ diànhuà de shíhou, tā zhèngzài xǐzǎo

When I called, he was in the shower. (neutral — reference time is the past, but 正在 still means 'in the middle of')

💡
Reference time comes from context, not from 在/正在. The same 正在 sentence reads as "is doing" or "was doing" depending on the time word around it (今天 vs 昨天, 现在 vs …的时候). The marker's only job is "in progress."

Three look-alikes to keep apart: 在 progressive vs 着 vs 在 location

The syllable 在 does three unrelated jobs, and the durative 着 hovers nearby — sorting them out is the real skill here.

  • Progressive 在 marks an ongoing action: 他在开门 "he is opening the door."
  • Durative marks a resulting state that persists: 门开着 "the door is (standing) open." The action is over; the state remains.
  • Locative / coverb marks where: 他在家 "he's at home," 在家看书 "reads at home." This 在 is followed by a place, not a verb.

他在开门,你等一下。

tā zài kāi mén, nǐ děng yíxià

He's opening the door — wait a moment. (action in progress → 在 + verb)

门开着,你直接进来吧。

mén kāi zhe, nǐ zhíjiē jìnlái ba

The door's open — just come right in. (resulting state → 着)

他在家看书,没出门。

tā zài jiā kàn shū, méi chūmén

He's reading at home — he didn't go out. (在家 = location, not progressive)

To negate a progressive, use 没(在) — "not currently doing" — never 不. 不在 means "isn't present / isn't at," a completely different statement.

我没在看电视,我在写作业。

wǒ méi zài kàn diànshì, wǒ zài xiě zuòyè

I'm not watching TV — I'm doing homework. (negate progress with 没在, not 不)

Common Mistakes

1. Stacking 在 and 正在 together. Pick one marker — they don't combine.

❌ 他在正在吃饭。

Incorrect — use one progressive marker: 他正在吃饭 (or 他在吃饭).

✅ 他正在吃饭。

tā zhèngzài chī fàn

He's eating right now. — a single marker.

2. Negating the progressive with 不. "Not currently doing" is 没在, not 不 (which either negates habit or means "not present").

❌ 我不在看电视。

Wrong sense — 不在 reads as 'not present'; for 'not currently watching' use 没在: 我没在看电视.

✅ 我没在看电视。

wǒ méi zài kàn diànshì

I'm not watching TV (right now). — 没在 for the negated progressive.

3. Using progressive 在 for a resulting state. An action in progress is 在 + verb; a persisting result is 着.

❌ 窗户在开。

Odd for 'the window is open' — that's a state, so use 着: 窗户开着.

✅ 窗户开着呢。

chuānghu kāi zhe ne

The window is open. — 着 for the resulting state.

4. Putting the marker after the verb. 在/正在/正 are pre-verb adverbs.

❌ 他吃饭正在。

Incorrect — the marker goes before the verb: 他正在吃饭.

✅ 他正在吃饭呢。

tā zhèngzài chī fàn ne

He's eating right now. — marker before the verb, 呢 at the end.

Key Takeaways

  • Mark an action in progress with pre-verb 在 / 正在 / 正, often closed by : 他在打电话, 我正在吃饭呢.
  • This is aspect, not tense — the "in progress" reading takes its time frame (now / then) from context.
  • = plain, 正在 = "right this moment," = "just then / coinciding" (usually with 着 or 呢).
  • Keep three 在-things apart: progressive 在 (action) vs durative 着 (resulting state) vs locative 在 (place).
  • Negate with 没在, never 不.
