Chinese piles all its adverbials before the verb, and when several of them stack up, they line up in a remarkably stable order. Where English scatters adverbs — some before the verb, most trailing after the object ("she sang beautifully in the hall last night") — Chinese marches them out in a single pre-verbal column: time first, then scope words like 也/都, then modals and certainty, then place, then manner hugging the verb. Get the column right and long sentences like 我们也都常常一起去 (wǒmen yě dōu chángcháng yìqǐ qù) "we also all often go together" fall into place; get it wrong and the sentence sounds scrambled.
The default sequence
Think of the pre-verbal zone as a set of ordered slots. Adverbials fill their slot and never jump the queue.
| Slot | Function | Typical words | Fragment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Time | 昨天, 明天, 常常, 一般, 总是 | 明天 |
| 2 | Scope | 也, 都 (order: 也都) | 也 |
| 3 | Modal / certainty | 想, 要, 会, 一定, 可能 | 想 |
| 4 | Place | 在家, 在公司 | 在家 |
| 5 | Manner / degree | 好好, 认真地, 一起, 很 | 好好 |
| 6 | Verb | — | 休息 |
Read straight down and you get the model sentence: 我明天也想在家好好休息 (wǒ míngtiān yě xiǎng zài jiā hǎohǎo xiūxi) "tomorrow I also want to rest well at home."
我明天也想在家好好休息。
wǒ míngtiān yě xiǎng zài jiā hǎohǎo xiūxi
modal > place > manner > verb." />
我们也都常常一起去那家饭馆。
wǒmen yě dōu chángcháng yìqǐ qù nà jiā fànguǎn
manner > verb." />
他明天也要在公司加班。
tā míngtiān yě yào zài gōngsī jiābān
He also has to work overtime at the office tomorrow. (neutral)
Time and place both come before the verb
The biggest shift for English speakers: when and where both sit in front of the verb, not after it. English says "I read in the library every day"; Chinese says the mirror image — "I every-day in-the-library read."
我周末一般都在家好好休息。
wǒ zhōumò yìbān dōu zài jiā hǎohǎo xiūxi
On weekends I generally just rest well at home. (informal) — time, scope, place all precede the verb.
他每天早上都先喝杯咖啡。
tā měitiān zǎoshang dōu xiān hē bēi kāfēi
sequence 先 > verb." />
Scope words: 也 before 都, and both after time
The two scope adverbs 也 "also" and 都 "all" have a fixed internal order — 也都, never 都也 — and as a pair they sit after any time word but before modals and manner.
他们也都同意了。
tāmen yě dōu tóngyì le
They also all agreed. (neutral) — the fixed 也都 order.
我们下个月也想再去一次。
wǒmen xià ge yuè yě xiǎng zài qù yí cì
modal > 再 > verb." />
你们最好也早点儿睡。
nǐmen zuìhǎo yě zǎodiǎnr shuì
time-manner > verb." />
For the scope words in depth, see 也 (also) and 都 (all / scope).
Manner hugs the verb
The closer an adverbial is to the content of the action, the closer it sits to the verb. Manner adverbs — including reduplicated ones and those with 地 — are the last thing before the verb.
孩子们昨天都高高兴兴地回家了。
háizimen zuótiān dōu gāogāoxìngxìng de huí jiā le
manner+地 > verb." />
她总是很认真地听讲。
tā zǒngshì hěn rènzhēn de tīngjiǎng
manner+地 > verb." />
Common Mistakes
1. Trailing a place after the verb. English pushes location to the end; Chinese fronts it.
❌ 我休息在家。
Wrong — the place phrase must precede the verb.
✅ 我在家休息。
wǒ zài jiā xiūxi
I rest at home.
2. Reversing 也 and 都. The pair is locked as 也都.
❌ 他们都也同意了。
Wrong — the order is 也都, never 都也.
✅ 他们也都同意了。
tāmen yě dōu tóngyì le
They also all agreed.
3. Trailing the time word after the verb. Time belongs at the front of the pre-verbal column.
❌ 我看书每天。
Wrong — the time word must come before the verb.
✅ 我每天看书。
wǒ měitiān kàn shū
I read every day.
4. Putting manner before scope. 也/都 come first; the manner adverb sits closest to the verb.
❌ 我一起也去。
Wrong — scope 也 precedes the manner adverb 一起.
✅ 我也一起去。
wǒ yě yìqǐ qù
I'll go along too.
Key Takeaways
- Stack adverbials before the verb in a fixed order: Time > Scope (也/都) > Modal/certainty > Place (在…) > Manner > Verb.
- Both time and place precede the verb — the reverse of English, which trails them after the object.
- Scope words are locked as 也都 (also all), and both sit after the time word.
- Manner hugs the verb — reduplicated adverbs and 地-phrases come last before the action.
- The model to memorize: 明天 · 也都 · 想 · 在家 · 好好 · 休息.

- 也 (Also) and Its PlacementHSK 1 — 也 (yě) means 'also / too / either' and clamps to the predicate — after the subject, before the verb or adjective (我也去, 她也很高) — and in negatives it comes before 不/没 (我也不去).
- 都 (All/Both) and Backward ScopeHSK 1 — 都 (dōu) means 'all / both' but sums up what comes BEFORE it — the plural thing must precede 都 (我们都去, 这些都很贵) — and its position relative to 不 flips the meaning (都不 'none' vs 不都 'not all').
- Adverbs Go Before the VerbHSK 1 — The cardinal rule of Chinese adverbs: they sit after the subject and before the verb or adjective — 我也去, 他很忙, 我经常运动 — and can never trail at the end of the clause the way English adverbs do.
