The endings of the Central Catalan imperfect subjunctive are stable; the difficulty lies in choosing the stem. High-frequency verbs give forms such as fos, hagués, anés, fes, digués, pogués, and volgués. Some are true one-off irregularities, while many belong to a productive velar-stem family.
There is no honest single shortcut for all of them. Learn the major principal forms, then use recurring stem relationships to reduce the memorization.
If the regular endings are not yet automatic, review forming the imperfect subjunctive before learning these stems.
Seven essential paradigms
The full Central paradigms below use the ordinary -s- series. Notice that ser, anar, and fer do not share a stem with their present-subjunctive forms sigui, vagi, and faci.
| Person | ser | haver | anar | fer | dir | poder | voler |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| jo | fos | hagués | anés | fes | digués | pogués | volgués |
| tu | fossis | haguessis | anessis | fessis | diguessis | poguessis | volguessis |
| ell / ella / vostè | fos | hagués | anés | fes | digués | pogués | volgués |
| nosaltres | fóssim | haguéssim | anéssim | féssim | diguéssim | poguéssim | volguéssim |
| vosaltres | fóssiu | haguéssiu | anéssiu | féssiu | diguéssiu | poguéssiu | volguéssiu |
| ells / elles / vostès | fossin | haguessin | anessin | fessin | diguessin | poguessin | volguessin |
Si fos més a prop, hi aniria a peu.
If it were closer, I would walk there.
I would have liked you to come to dinner.
The doctor recommended that I go to the emergency department.
If we took a break now, we would finish too late.
They wanted you all to tell the truth from the beginning.
I didn't think they could repair it today.
I didn't expect you to want to stay there until the end.
The accents follow the regular pattern: no accent in fossis or haguessin, but required accents in fóssim, haguéssiu, and the first/third singular forms ending in -és. Monosyllabic fos and fes have no accent.
The velar family
Many irregular verbs contain a velar consonant—written g, gu, or qu—in several parts of their paradigm. If you already know present subjunctive tingui or simple past tingué, imperfect subjunctive tingués is much less surprising.
| Infinitive | Present subjunctive clue | Imperfect subjunctive |
|---|---|---|
The owner wanted us to take care of the garden.
I was surprised that Berta knew so many people in the neighborhood.
Ens van avisar perquè no caiguéssim al mateix parany.
They warned us so that we wouldn't fall into the same trap.
The correlation is useful, not infallible. Poder has present pugui but imperfect pogués; voler has vulgui but volgués. The vowel belongs to the tense-specific stem. Do not produce invented forms such as pugués or vulgués in the Central standard.
Irregularities outside the velar pattern
Several frequent verbs must simply be learned:
| Infinitive | Present subjunctive | Imperfect subjunctive | Trap |
|---|---|---|---|
| ser | sigui | fos | not *sigués |
| fer | faci | fes | not *fagués |
| anar | vagi | anés | returns to an- |
| saber | sàpiga | sabés | returns to sab- |
| cabre | càpiga | cabés | returns to cab- |
They were looking for someone who knew how to adapt the program to a small screen.
There is no rule that derives fos from sigui or fes from faci. These are high-frequency forms, so learning each as a pair is more efficient than trying to force a false regularity.
Mood, viewpoint, and form are separate decisions
An irregular form does not create subjunctive meaning by itself. Compare Sabia que podia venir with Dubtava que pogués venir. The indicative podia asserts the possibility inside a report; pogués places it under past doubt. First determine whether the dependent proposition is asserted, then select the tense from the discourse viewpoint, and only then build the correct stem and ending.
They told me that the technician could come on Monday.
Dubtaven que el tècnic pogués venir dilluns.
They doubted that the technician could come on Monday.
The first main verb, van dir, is a periphrastic past: anar plus an infinitive with no a. In van anar a dir-ho al director, the sequence anar a + infinitive means that they went to tell him. Neither pattern licenses Spanish ir a as a generic future, and neither chooses the subordinate mood automatically.
Similarly, volien que treballéssim normally means “they wanted us to work.” Use progressive volien que estiguéssim treballant a les nou only when being in the middle of the activity at nine is the intended viewpoint.
Pronouns and regional forms
Weak pronouns precede a finite imperfect subjunctive in dependent clauses: volia que m'ho diguessis; dubtava que se'n poguessin sortir. Negation comes before them: no creia que no se'n recordés. The ending agrees with the subject, not with the pronoun cluster.
(regional: Valencian) The -ra series is standard and productive. The corresponding first/third-person singular forms are fora, haguera, anara, fera, diguera, poguera, and volguera. Valencian also admits the -s- series, often with regional second-person and plural endings such as fesses, féssem, fésseu, fessen. Do not call fora or fera errors; do not confuse them with Spanish fuera and hiciera either.
(regional: Northwestern) Some -ra forms occur in speech near the Valencian transition, while the general -s- series remains standard. The Central forms in the main table are widely intelligible throughout the language area.
Mini-dialogue: the missing keys
—I thought you had told Ona to bring them. —No; I asked her to make a copy, not to take the keys away.
—I si les hagués deixat al cotxe?
—What if she had left them in the car? —It's possible, but she assured me she hadn't gone there.
Portés, fes, and s'endugués are imperfect subjunctives under past influence; hagués deixat is pluperfect subjunctive because the imagined leaving precedes the current inference. Havia anat is indicative because the final clause reports what she asserted.
Common Mistakes
1. Extending the present stem to a suppletive imperfect.
❌ Volia que siguessis més prudent.
Incorrect—the imperfect subjunctive of ser uses the stem fo-.
✅ Volia que fossis més prudent.
I wanted you to be more careful.
2. Carrying the present-subjunctive vowel into poder or voler.
❌ Dubtava que puguessis venir.
Incorrect in the Central standard—the imperfect stem is pogu-.
✅ Dubtava que poguessis venir.
I doubted that you could come.
3. Inventing a velar stem for fer.
❌ Ens van demanar que faguéssim silenci.
Incorrect in standard Catalan—the imperfect subjunctive is féssim.
✅ Ens van demanar que féssim silenci.
They asked us to be quiet.
4. Copying a Spanish irregular form.
❌ Si fuera més fàcil, ho faria jo.
Incorrect Catalan—the Spanish form fuera is not Catalan.
✅ Si fos més fàcil, ho faria jo.
If it were easier, I would do it myself.
5. Letting a familiar trigger override assertion.
Incorrect here—confirmar presents the permission as established.
She confirmed that I could enter without an appointment.
Key Takeaways
- Master fos, hagués, anés, and fes as principal forms; they are not transparently built from the present subjunctive.
- Use velar correspondences to predict families such as tingués, vingués, begués, and conegués.
- Remember the tense-specific vowels in pogués and volgués.
- Decide mood from assertion status and tense from viewpoint before choosing the irregular stem.
