Catalan tense forms do more than put events before, at, or after the moment of speech. A speaker can transpose a tense into a new discourse setting: the present can make a past scene unfold before us, the imperfect can enter a dream or soften a request, the future can infer what is probably true now, and the conditional can keep a claim at a distance. What unifies these uses is viewpoint, not an English translation.
These transpositions are productive in contemporary Catalan. Some belong to ordinary conversation, others to narration or journalism, but none cancels person-number agreement or the normal placement of weak pronouns.
A model across the four viewpoints
The following complete paradigm of parlar makes the morphology visible. Stress falls on the accented vowel in parlaré, parlaríem and related forms; the present and imperfect follow their usual stress patterns.
| Person | Present | Imperfect | Future | Conditional |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| jo | parlo | parlava | parlaré | parlaria |
| tu | parles | parlaves | parlaràs | parlaries |
| ell / ella / vostè | parla | parlava | parlarà | parlaria |
| nosaltres | parlem | parlàvem | parlarem | parlaríem |
| vosaltres | parleu | parlàveu | parlareu | parlaríeu |
| ells / elles / vostès | parlen | parlaven | parlaran | parlarien |
The same forms can receive nonliteral time readings, but their endings still agree with their subject. Weak pronouns precede a finite transposed form: me'l trobo, no t'ho diria, ja ho sabràs. With an attached infinitive, normal pronoun climbing remains available: ho devia haver entès or devia haver-ho entès.
The historical present: narrating the past as current
The historical present moves the narrator's “now” into a past scene. It is common in lively conversation, biographies, plot summaries, historical exposition, and sports narration. A past-time expression makes the chronology clear; the present supplies immediacy.
L'any 1932, Pompeu Fabra publica el diccionari general i consolida una obra normativa decisiva.
In 1932, Pompeu Fabra publishes the general dictionary and consolidates a decisive body of normative work.
Arribo a l'estació, miro el panell i veig que el meu tren ja ha sortit.
I get to the station, look at the board, and see that my train has already left.
Al final del capítol, la protagonista obre la carta i no se'n creu ni una paraula.
At the end of the chapter, the protagonist opens the letter and doesn't believe a word of it.
The historical present does not mean that the event is still happening. It changes the vantage point from which the event is staged. A narrator can enter the scene with the present and then leave it: L'any 1980 s'instal·la a Girona; dos anys després ja treballava a la universitat. Excessive switching, however, can blur the timeline. In (formal) historical writing, establish dates clearly and maintain a coherent narrative frame.
The imperfect of politeness and imagined scenes
The imperfect normally looks inside an ongoing or habitual past situation. Transposed into present interaction, it can make an intention or request less abrupt because it presents it as backgrounded rather than imposed now.
Volia demanar-te si em podries cobrir el torn de divendres.
I wanted to ask whether you could cover my shift on Friday.
Venia a demanar-te que m'expliquessis què he de presentar amb la sol·licitud.
I wanted to ask you to explain what I have to submit with the application.
This (polite; neutral to formal) imperfect does not assert that the wish has ended. Volia demanar-te... concerns a request being made now; the past morphology creates interpersonal distance. It is especially natural as an opening, not as a mechanical substitute for every present request.
The imperfect also establishes the “present” inside dreams, games, and invented scenarios. Children use it productively in make-believe, and adults use it while planning a hypothetical scene.
En el somni, jo vivia en una casa que flotava i tu hi arribaves amb barca.
In the dream, I lived in a floating house and you arrived there by boat.
Fem veure que nosaltres érem els clients i vosaltres ens ensenyàveu el pis.
Let's pretend we were the clients and you showed us the apartment.
Here the imperfect is not primarily anterior to speech. It creates an internal world and gives its states and activities an unbounded background. English may use a simple past for the same distancing effect, but it does not show person and number as richly as Catalan.
The future of conjecture
The simple future can express a reasoned guess about the present. Time may be present; the future ending marks the speaker's incomplete epistemic access.
—On és la Laia? —Encara serà al despatx; avui tenia una reunió llarga.
—Where is Laia? —She must still be at the office; she had a long meeting today.
Ara no contesten perquè ja dormiran.
They aren't answering now because they're probably already asleep.
The future perfect similarly conjectures about a completed event: Hauran perdut l'autobús “They must have missed the bus.” This is not the same as a confident future prediction. Compare:
| Form | Reference time | Speaker stance |
|---|---|---|
| La Júlia serà a casa ara. | present | conjecture: she is probably home |
| La Júlia serà a casa demà. | future | prediction: she will be home |
| La Júlia deu ser a casa. | present | probability, often the clearest neutral option |
Deure + infinitive is widely preferred when an unambiguous probability reading matters. See Future for Probability.
Conditional distance
The conditional can locate an event after a past viewpoint—va prometre que vindria—but it also distances the speaker from a proposition. In reasoning, it presents a consequence as dependent on assumptions; in (journalistic) prose, it can attribute unconfirmed information.
Aquesta diferència indicaria que les dues mostres no provenen del mateix lot.
This difference would indicate that the two samples do not come from the same batch. (academic)
Segons fonts municipals, l'acord es faria públic dilluns.
According to municipal sources, the agreement would be made public on Monday. (journalistic, not independently confirmed)
The source phrase is essential in the journalistic example. The conditional should not become a vague shield for an unattributed rumor. In ordinary conversation, probability about a past event is more idiomatically expressed with deure: Devia ser a casa, rather than copying Spanish-style estaria a casa as a generic conjecture.
Mini-dialogue: changing the camera
—I llavors què passa? —Doncs entro al menjador i me'ls trobo tots amagats darrere el sofà.
—And then what happens? —Well, I go into the living room and find them all hiding behind the sofa.
—No et devies espantar? —Una mica; devien ser les deu i jo no m'esperava ningú.
—You must have been startled, right? —A little; it was probably about ten and I wasn't expecting anyone.
The first speaker uses a historical present to replay a completed surprise. In the reply, devien ser les deu gives an approximate, cautiously reconstructed time, while no m'esperava supplies past background. One scene can therefore combine viewpoints without losing chronological coherence.
Regional and register notes
These discourse uses occur throughout the Catalan-speaking area. Their frequency depends more on genre and speaker style than on a strict regional boundary. (regional: Valencian) speakers may combine them with Valencian morphology and vocabulary, but the historical-present and conjectural readings themselves are shared. (regional: Balearic) and (regional: Northwestern) narration likewise uses the present vividly. (regional: Northern) contact with French and (regional: Alguerese) contact with Italian can influence individual preferences, but a learner should not imitate a contact-language periphrasis as though it were a pan-Catalan rule.
In formal IEC or AVL prose, clarity of source and timeline matters more than avoiding transposition. Literary narrative may shift tenses more freely, but the shifts must remain interpretable.
Common Mistakes
1. Reading a historical present as literal present time.
❌ El 1714 Barcelona cau ara mateix.
Incorrect framing—an explicit historical year conflicts with 'right now' unless a live reenactment is meant.
✅ El 1714 Barcelona cau després d'un setge llarguíssim.
In 1714, Barcelona falls after an extremely long siege.
2. Overusing the progressive because English uses one.
❌ L'any 1907 Prat de la Riba està fundant l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans.
Unnatural as a neutral historical statement—the English progressive does not require estar + gerund.
✅ L'any 1907 Prat de la Riba funda l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans.
In 1907, Prat de la Riba founds the Institute for Catalan Studies.
3. Confusing the periphrastic past with movement plus purpose.
❌ Ahir va a anunciar la decisió davant la premsa.
Incorrect for a completed past announcement—the periphrastic past has no a before the infinitive.
✅ Ahir va anunciar la decisió davant la premsa.
Yesterday she announced the decision to the press.
4. Copying a Spanish auxiliary or conjectural conditional.
❌ A aquella hora estaria dormint, suposo.
A Spanish-influenced conjectural conditional; it is not the neutral formal Catalan choice.
✅ A aquella hora devia dormir, suposo.
At that time, he was probably asleep, I suppose.
5. Choosing mood from a surface trigger while ignoring assertion.
❌ Va confirmar que arribés l'endemà.
Incorrect if he confirmed a fact—the subordinate event is asserted and takes the indicative.
✅ Va confirmar que arribaria l'endemà.
He confirmed that he would arrive the next day.
Key Takeaways
- Tense transposition changes discourse viewpoint or assertion strength; it does not erase chronology.
- The historical present stages a past scene as current, while the imperfect can create politeness or an imagined background.
- A future can express present conjecture, and a conditional can mark dependency, attribution, or distance.
- Person-number agreement and weak-pronoun placement remain fully active under every transposed reading.
