Conjugation of treure

Treure means “to remove, take out,” with extensions such as “withdraw money,” “get a grade,” “draw a conclusion” and “make a profit.” It is one of the clearest cases where a single written infinitive does not reveal every stem: learn trec/trac – traiem – treia – traguí – trauré – tregui – tret. Notice especially that the future is trauré, not treuré, and the gerund is traient, not treguent.

The IEC recognizes both treure and traure. This page uses treure as the Central Catalan citation form while displaying the standard a-variants that are integral to Valencian and also accepted more broadly. The verb is not defective and never takes an incoative -eix-.

💡
The apparently mixed vowels form a stable system: trec/treu beside traiem, imperfect treia, velar traguí/tregui, future trauré, and participle tret. Treat these as principal parts rather than trying to force one vowel through every cell.

The participle is irregular: tret, never treut or tragut. After haver it stays invariable: les caixes que hem tret. As an adjective or passive participle it agrees: una fotografia treta de l'arxiu. The form tret is also a noun (“shot,” “feature”) and appears in the prepositional expression tret de “except for”; those are separate lexical uses.

The e- and a-forms in the present are both standard. A learner should be consistent with the chosen regional model, not treat one series as careless pronunciation. (Regional: Valencian) traure, trac, traus, trau, trauen are normal standard forms; traiem/traieu, treia and the tragu-/traur- families show that no variety simply keeps one vowel everywhere.

Cada vespre trec les bicicletes del pati perquè no es mullin.

Every evening I take the bicycles out of the courtyard so they don't get wet.

Quan compartíem pis, trèiem les escombraries per torns.

The periphrastic past is neutral conversational Catalan. The synthetic past is standard but often (formal/literary) in Central usage; its spoken vitality varies across regions.

Northwestern standard also admits tragui beside tregui. The imperfect in -ra (traguera, tragueres...) is standard and especially alive in Valencian.

Direct-object pronouns are extremely frequent: treu-lo, traieu-les. With pronominal treure's “take off/remove from oneself,” the reflexive pronoun combines with the object: treu-te-la. Negation puts the cluster before the verb: no te la treguis. A de-source or partitive quantity can become the pronoun en: Treu dos llibres de la caixa → Treu-ne dos.

Treu-te l'abric, que aquí dins fa molta calor.

Take off your coat; it's very warm in here.

No te les treguis encara: necessitaràs les botes per travessar el fang.

Don't take them off yet; you'll need the boots to cross the mud.

D'aquell calaix, traieu-ne només les carpetes blaves.

From that drawer, take out only the blue folders.

Objects, sources, and extended meanings

The removed entity is a direct object; its source is commonly introduced by de: treure el pa del forn. Pronominal treure's is required when the subject removes clothing or an object from themself in the ordinary reflexive construction. Plain treure remains transitive in Li vaig treure una estella del dit, where li marks the affected person.

Frequent extensions include treure diners, treure una bona nota, treure una conclusió, treure profit de, treure importància a and treure de polleguera. Their objects are not literally moved, but the same semantic core—bringing something out or away—remains visible.

De l'enquesta no podem treure cap conclusió fiable perquè la mostra és massa petita.

We can't draw any reliable conclusion from the survey because the sample is too small.

💡
Use de for the source and in treure profit de. Use a with the target in treure importància a una cosa. These collocations are lexical and cannot be copied blindly from English or Spanish.
