Institutional and Ceremonial Formulae

Institutional Catalan is built from formulae with controlled slots: Benvolguda senyora + surname, Us fem arribar + noun phrase, S'acorda + infinitive, Rebeu + noun phrase. These expressions are not decorative vocabulary. Their preferred verb, article, preposition, clitic, agreement, and person of address form one stored grammatical package. A word-for-word English sentence may be comprehensible and still sound strikingly noninstitutional.

This page uses contemporary standard Catalan, with Central Catalan as the spoken baseline. The central forms presented here are also normal in formal Valencian (AVL), Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese writing unless a note says otherwise. The main variation is not regional but register and choice of addressee: tu, vós/vosaltres, or vostè/vostès.

For the full agreement patterns behind those choices, see vostè, vós, and address.

Recording a decisionS'acorda + infinitive / que-clauseapproved actionminutes, resolutions
Closing a meetingS'aixeca la sessióoptional timeinstitutional

The fixed slots resist casual synonymy. Minutes normally say s'aixeca la sessió, literally “the session is raised,” not a freshly composed equivalent of English “the meeting is ended.” By contrast, adjective endings and possessives remain variable: Benvolgut senyor Puig, Benvolguda senyora Puig, Benvolgudes companyes; el meu condol, el nostre condol.

💡
Treat a formula as a miniature construction. Memorize rebre el condol, felicitar algú per una cosa, and donar per aprovada una proposta with their articles and prepositions, not as separate dictionary words.

Salutations and closings: person must remain coherent

(formal) Benvolgut/uda is a dependable opening in letters and ordinary professional email. Distingit/ida is more ceremonious and distant. The noun or title controls agreement, and the comma belongs to the written formula.

Benvolguda senyora Ferrer, us escric en nom de l'associació per confirmar la vostra participació.

Dear Ms Ferrer, I am writing on behalf of the association to confirm your participation. (formal; respectful vós)

Distingides membres del jurat, rebeu el nostre agraïment per la vostra dedicació.

Distinguished members of the jury, please accept our thanks for your dedication. (ceremonial)

The first example maintains respectful vós through us and vostra. An institution may instead use vostè, especially when addressing one person: li escric and la seva participació. Both systems are standard. Mixing them inside one letter is poor editing. In Valencian institutional usage, vosté is the AVL spelling corresponding to IEC vostè; this is a normative spelling difference, not a difference in politeness.

Closings also come in conventional packages. Atentament is neutral-formal; Cordialment is slightly warmer. A solemn letter can close with a finite formula:

Aprofito l'avinentesa per saludar-vos cordialment.

I take this opportunity to send you my cordial greetings. (formal, somewhat traditional)

That sentence is grammatical and current in administrative correspondence, but it sounds heavier than Cordialment. It should not be copied into a friendly message merely because English ends letters with “kind regards.”

Condolences, congratulations, and acknowledgments

Condolence formulae deliberately limit originality. The restraint communicates respect. (solemn) Rebeu el meu més sentit condol addresses respectful vós or plural vosaltres; singular vostè requires Rebi. The article in el condol and the superlative phrase més sentit belong to the conventional expression.

Rebi el nostre més sentit condol per la pèrdua de la seva mare.

Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your mother. (formal; vostè)

En aquests moments tan dolorosos, us acompanyem en el sentiment.

At this painful time, please accept our sympathy. (solemn; literally, we accompany you in your grief)

T'acompanyo en el sentiment is conventional with a close acquaintance; Em sap molt greu is plainer and often more natural in speech. The institutional formula is not “more caring” by itself: register must match the relationship.

Congratulations select per for the reason. Enhorabona can stand alone or take per: Enhorabona pel premi. Felicitats is particularly common for birthdays and festive occasions, while felicitar algú per readily names an achievement.

Us felicitem per haver obtingut el Premi Ciutat de Palma i us desitgem molts èxits.

We congratulate you on receiving the City of Palma Prize and wish you every success. (formal)

Enhorabona per la nova responsabilitat; estem segurs que fareu una gran feina.

Congratulations on the new responsibility; we are sure you will do a great job. (neutral-formal)

Acknowledgments commonly use agrair as a transitive verb: agrair una cosa a algú. When the recipient is pronominalized, li/els marks the person; ho can replace the thing thanked for.

Li agraïm la confiança que ha dipositat en el nostre equip.

We thank you for the trust you have placed in our team. (formal; vostè)

Vau revisar l'informe fora d'hores i us ho agraïm sincerament.

You reviewed the report outside working hours, and we sincerely thank you for it. (neutral-formal)

The second sentence shows two different clitics: us is the recipient and ho represents the fact being acknowledged. Replacing the package with donar agraïments under the influence of Spanish dar agradecimientos is not idiomatic contemporary Catalan.

Motions, resolutions, and minutes

Minutes favor impersonal or passive-looking es constructions because the document foregrounds the act and its institutional validity, not the individual speaker. The participle agrees when it belongs to donar per + adjective/participle: es dona per aprovada la proposta, es donen per aprovats els comptes.

Es declara oberta la sessió a les nou i cinc minuts.

The meeting is declared open at 9:05. (formula used in minutes)

S'acorda ajornar la votació fins que l'assessoria jurídica emeti l'informe.

It is agreed to postpone the vote until the legal advisers issue their report. (formal minutes)

La presidenta sotmet l'esmena a votació i queda aprovada per majoria.

The chair puts the amendment to a vote, and it is approved by a majority. (institutional)

Sense més assumptes a tractar, s'aixeca la sessió a dos quarts de vuit.

There being no further business, the meeting is adjourned at 7:30. (closing formula in minutes)

The infinitive after s'acorda works when the decision concerns the same institutional body: s'acorda publicar.... A finite clause can make participants explicit: s'acorda que la secretaria publiqui.... English “to pass a motion” does not justify a literal verb of physical passing; Catalan normally uses aprovar una moció/proposta.

Three substitutable frames

These frames are productive only in the marked slots:

  1. Benvolgut/uda(s) + [title, name, or collective],: Benvolgut doctor Soler; Benvolgudes famílies; Benvolguts membres del consell.
  2. Us fem arribar + [document, message, or wish]: Us fem arribar el certificat; Us fem arribar el nostre condol; Us fem arribar les conclusions. The clitic and verb identify institutional senders addressing vós/vosaltres.
  3. S'acorda + [infinitive] / que + [subjunctive clause]: S'acorda renovar el conveni; S'acorda que tresoreria en tramiti el pagament.

Us fem arribar, adjunta, la resolució definitiva de la convocatòria.

We are sending you the final decision on the call, attached. (formal)

Here adjunta agrees with feminine la resolució. If the noun is plural, write adjunts els certificats or recast as adjuntem els certificats.

Literal image, idiomatic function, and a plain alternative

fer arribar un documentcause a document to arrivesend/deliver officiallyEnviar un document
aixecar la sessióraise the sessionformally adjournAcabar la reunió
donar per aprovadagive/take as approveddeclare approvedAprovar

La reunió s'ha acabat is a nonidiomatic-for-minutes but fully comprehensible alternative to s'aixeca la sessió. It reports the same event without performing the chair's ceremonial act. Formulae do social work: they enact acknowledgment, solemnity, or institutional authority.

💡
Plain Catalan is not incorrect. Choose the ceremonial formula when you are performing an institutional act; choose the plain equivalent when you are merely reporting what happened.

Mini-dialogue: preparing the minutes

—Hi posem «la presidenta va acabar la reunió»? —En l'acta, millor «sense més assumptes a tractar, s'aixeca la sessió». —I l'acord? —«S'acorda publicar la resolució demà».

—Shall we write 'the chair ended the meeting'? —In the minutes, better 'there being no further business, the meeting is adjourned.' —And the decision? —'It is agreed to publish the decision tomorrow.'

The exchange contrasts a grammatical narrative with the conventional language of minutes. It also shows that institutional formulae need not be ornate: the strongest ones are short, repeatable, and legally unambiguous.

Common Mistakes

❌ Estimada Senyora Pons, li escric sobre la convocatòria.

Register and capitalization are off: Estimada is personal here, and common titles are lowercase in running Catalan.

✅ Benvolguda senyora Pons, li escric en relació amb la convocatòria.

Dear Ms Pons, I am writing concerning the call. (formal)

❌ Li donem les nostres felicitacions per haver guanyat.

Comprehensible, but it mechanically assembles English 'give our congratulations' and is not the preferred Catalan formula.

✅ La felicitem per haver guanyat.

We congratulate you on winning. (formal; vostè)

❌ Donem els nostres agraïments a totes les persones voluntàries.

This selects a light verb by Spanish analogy; formal Catalan normally uses agrair or donar les gràcies.

✅ Agraïm la col·laboració de totes les persones voluntàries.

We thank all the volunteers for their help.

❌ Rebeu nostre condol més sentit.

The formula has lost its fixed article and preferred word order.

✅ Rebeu el nostre més sentit condol.

Please accept our deepest condolences. (solemn)

❌ En un missatge de condol: «Tal faràs, tal trobaràs!»

The proverb means roughly 'you reap what you sow'; in a condolence it is socially cruel and completely register-inappropriate.

✅ En un missatge de condol: «T'acompanyo en el sentiment.»

Please accept my sympathy. (solemn but appropriate)

Key Takeaways

  • Institutional formulae store grammar: felicitar per, agrair una cosa a algú, el condol, s'acorda, and s'aixeca la sessió are preferred combinations.
  • Keep the address system coherent: us/vostra/rebeu for respectful vós or plural vosaltres; li/seva/rebi for singular vostè.
  • Agreement remains active inside fixed frames: benvolgut/benvolguda, aprovada la proposta/aprovats els comptes, adjunta la resolució.
  • A literal alternative can be grammatical yet fail to perform the same social act. Acabar la reunió reports; aixecar la sessió formally adjourns.
  • Region matters less here than institution, relationship, and degree of ceremony. Label and control register before reaching for the most elevated wording.
