The Zero Determiner

A zero determiner is the meaningful absence of an article or other determiner: Comprem llibres “We buy books,” Beu cafè “She drinks coffee.” Catalan permits these bare noun phrases, especially as objects and in postverbal presentational positions, but it does not permit them everywhere English does.

The central contrast is referential. A bare noun usually contributes a type, material, or weak indefinite quantity; it does not by itself point to a uniquely identifiable individual. Once the listener must recover a particular set, Catalan normally adds an article, demonstrative, possessive, or other determiner.

The core distribution

EnvironmentZero determinerTypical interpretation
plural objectCompra llibres.books of the relevant kind; no identified set
mass objectCompra arròs.an unspecified amount of rice
postverbal presentationHan arribat cartes.newly presented letters
nominal predicateÉs arquitecta.profession or class membership
ordinary preverbal subjectEls llibres són cars.an identified set or a kind; article normally required

Busquem traductores experimentades i tècnics qualificats per al projecte.

We're looking for experienced female translators and qualified technicians for the project.

No visible determiner precedes either plural, but agreement is fully active: traductores experimentades is feminine plural and tècnics qualificats masculine plural.

💡
Zero is not “nothing happening.” It signals that the noun phrase is not anchored as a particular identifiable referent. Number, gender, modification, and syntactic position still matter.

Bare plurals and mass nouns as objects

Direct-object position is the most productive home of the zero determiner. A bare plural presents an open set of countable items; a bare mass noun presents an unbounded amount or kind.

A la biblioteca consulto revistes especialitzades i llegeixo premsa local.

At the library I consult specialist magazines and read local newspapers.

Per sopar comprarem peix fresc, arròs integral i verdures de temporada.

For dinner we'll buy fresh fish, brown rice, and seasonal vegetables.

Modifiers do not automatically make a bare phrase definite. Revistes especialitzades and verdures de temporada remain non-identifiable categories. Ordinary descriptive adjectives follow the noun, so English fresh fish becomes peix fresc, not fresc peix.

Adding a determiner changes reference:

He comprat llibres sobre arquitectura.

I've bought books about architecture.

He comprat els llibres sobre arquitectura que em vas recomanar.

I've bought the books about architecture that you recommended to me.

The zero phrase introduces an unspecified set. The definite article in the second sentence instructs the listener to recover a particular, uniquely delimited set from the relative clause.

Mass nouns show the same contrast:

Vols cafè?

Would you like coffee?

Vols el cafè que ha preparat la Núria?

Would you like the coffee that Núria made?

English can use zero in both generic and nonspecific contexts, so article choice cannot be copied mechanically. Ask whether the Catalan phrase denotes material or an open class, or whether it identifies a recoverable quantity.

Specific indefinite sets need more than zero

Bare nouns are weakly referential. If the speaker intends to introduce a particular set that can be tracked as individuals, uns/unes or alguns/algunes is often more natural.

He trobat unes fotografies que et vull ensenyar.

I've found some photographs that I want to show you.

The speaker has particular photographs in mind. Compare Busco fotografies antigues del barri, which can mean “I am looking for old photographs of the neighborhood” without committing to any known set.

This is a tendency rooted in information structure, not a ban on modifying bare nouns. A restrictive clause can remain nonspecific, especially with the subjunctive:

Necessitem persones que sàpiguen reparar instruments antics.

We need people who know how to repair old instruments.

No particular people are presupposed to exist. The zero determiner fits the open search.

Postverbal and existential presentation

New information readily appears after the verb with a bare plural or mass noun. Existential haver-hi is the clearest case: it places an entity in the discourse without treating it as already identifiable.

A la nevera hi ha llet, ous i dues ampolles d'aigua.

There is milk, there are eggs, and there are two bottles of water in the refrigerator.

Unaccusative and presentational clauses also permit bare postverbal subjects:

Aquest matí han arribat cartes urgents i han desaparegut diversos expedients.

Urgent letters arrived this morning, and several files disappeared.

Bare cartes urgents is introduced after han arribat. By contrast, ordinary bare plurals are not licensed as neutral preverbal subjects:

❌ Llimones són àcides.

Incorrect as a neutral generic statement — Catalan normally requires an article before a preverbal kind subject.

✅ Les llimones són àcides.

Lemons are sour.

This is a major English–Catalan difference. English generic plural Lemons is bare; Catalan normally uses the definite plural les llimones. The article here names the kind as a whole, not a particular bowl of lemons.

See Generic Reference for the wider contrast between kind-level articles and reference to a particular set.

💡
Position predicts possibility: objects and postverbal presented subjects welcome bare plurals and mass nouns; ordinary preverbal subjects usually require a determiner, even in generic statements.

Predicative nouns: profession and class membership

After ser, a profession, nationality used as a noun, religion, or social category commonly appears without an article when it merely classifies the subject.

La meva germana és enginyera i els seus companys són arquitectes.

My sister is an engineer, and her colleagues are architects.

An article returns when the predicate identifies a unique role or presents an evaluated instance:

La meva germana és l'enginyera responsable de l'obra.

My sister is the engineer in charge of the construction project.

La meva germana és una enginyera excel·lent.

My sister is an excellent engineer.

Bare enginyera assigns class membership. L'enginyera identifies the holder of a contextually unique role; una enginyera excel·lent evaluates her as one excellent member of the profession. The adjective does not mechanically force una: neutral És enginyera química remains bare because química classifies the specialization.

Mass nouns can likewise form a bare predicate when they classify a substance:

Això és cafè, no xocolata.

This is coffee, not chocolate.

Això és el cafè que he demanat?

Is this the coffee I ordered?

Bare cafè identifies the type of substance. El cafè que he demanat instead asks whether this is a particular, recoverable serving, so the article returns.

The article patterns of professions and unique roles are developed further in Articles with Professions and Identities.

Restricted bare singular count nouns

Catalan also permits singular count nouns without a determiner in certain close verb–noun combinations: buscar pis, tenir cotxe, portar barret. These do not normally introduce one individuated object. They describe an activity, possession type, or conventional property.

Des que treballa al centre, va en bicicleta i ja no té cotxe.

Since she started working downtown, she goes by bicycle and no longer has a car.

Compare the context-sensitive minimal pair:

En Marc busca pis a Girona.

Marc is apartment-hunting in Girona.

En Marc busca un pis que va veure anunciat ahir.

Marc is looking for an apartment that he saw advertised yesterday.

The bare singular forms a conventional property with buscar; un pis introduces one countable, trackable apartment. This pattern is lexically restricted. You cannot remove un/una from every singular count noun and expect an indefinite reading.

Bare nouns after prepositions and in fixed frames

Zero also appears in productive type or material descriptions and institutional frames: cafè amb llet, te sense sucre, anar en tren, ser a casa, anar a classe. A determiner returns when a specific entity is meant: sense el sucre que hi havies posat, en el tren de les sis.

Normalment vaig a classe en tren i prenc cafè sense sucre.

I normally go to class by train and drink coffee without sugar.

These expressions must be learned as constructions. The fact that en tren is bare does not license en autobús concret for “on the specific bus”; identifiable transport takes the relevant determiner.

Agreement still reveals Catalan gender

With no article, the adjective may be the only visible clue to gender. Do not borrow gender from a Spanish cognate. Catalan anàlisi is feminine, although Spanish análisis is masculine.

Han arribat anàlisis detallades i informes complets de tots dos laboratoris.

Detailed analyses and complete reports have arrived from both laboratories.

The correct pairs are anàlisis detallades and informes complets. Zero determination never licenses invariant modifiers.

Register and regional notes

The object/postverbal asymmetry belongs to the broad contemporary language, including the Central and Valencian standards. Individual institutional expressions and preferred transport prepositions vary by region, so learn the whole phrase used in your target variety.

Headings, signs, menus, and labels use bare nominal fragments more freely (formal) in telegraphic style: Entrada principal; Personal autoritzat; Venda d'entrades. That does not make article omission equally available in complete ordinary sentences.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying an English bare generic subject.

❌ Gossos necessiten exercici diari.

Incorrect as a neutral generic subject — Catalan requires the definite article.

✅ Els gossos necessiten exercici diari.

Dogs need daily exercise.

2. Adding an indefinite article to a mass noun.

❌ Per esmorzar vull un pa amb mantega.

Incorrect for an unspecified amount of bread — un pa means one loaf.

✅ Per esmorzar vull pa amb mantega.

For breakfast I want bread with butter.

3. Omitting the article from a specific set.

❌ He tornat llibres que em vas deixar.

Incorrect for the identifiable books lent by the listener.

✅ He tornat els llibres que em vas deixar.

I've returned the books you lent me.

4. Putting every modifier before the bare noun.

❌ Necessitem qualificades tècniques per al laboratori.

Unnatural neutral order — the descriptive adjective follows the noun.

✅ Necessitem tècniques qualificades per al laboratori.

We need qualified technicians for the laboratory.

5. Guessing gender from Spanish when no article is visible.

❌ Han publicat anàlisis detallats del problema.

Incorrect — anàlisi is feminine in Catalan.

✅ Han publicat anàlisis detallades del problema.

They have published detailed analyses of the problem.

Key Takeaways

Zero-determined plurals and mass nouns are natural as weakly referential objects and as postverbal new information. Ordinary preverbal subjects normally require an article, including generic plurals. Bare predicates classify; definite and indefinite predicates identify or evaluate. Modifiers remain possible and must agree, but specificity and discourse accessibility—not the mere presence of an adjective—decide when an overt determiner is needed.
