Catalan does not have one all-purpose equivalent of English some and any. Algun normally presents at least one possible member, cap is favored in questions, conditions, and negative clauses, and qualsevol removes restrictions by meaning “any one whatsoever.” Ningun exists too, but its ordinary use is regional rather than the Central baseline.
These words do more than count vaguely. They reveal whether a speaker asserts that something exists, leaves its existence open, denies it, or says that the choice makes no difference.
Forms at a glance
| Determiner | Forms | Typical noun | Central-standard value |
|---|---|---|---|
| algun | algun, alguna, alguns, algunes | singular or plural | some; a certain; one or more |
| cap | invariable | normally singular count | any in nonassertive contexts; no/not any with negation |
| ningun | ningun, ninguna | singular | regional equivalent of cap |
| qualsevol | singular qualsevol; plural qualssevol | either gender | any, whichever, no matter which |
Algunes famílies noves han demanat informació detallada.
Some new families have requested detailed information.
No hem rebut cap resposta clara ni cap document signat.
We haven't received any clear answer or any signed document.
The first example displays feminine plural agreement on algunes famílies noves. In the second, invariant cap does not copy the gender of feminine resposta or masculine document.
Algun asserts or suggests existence
Use algun/alguna/alguns/algunes when you present one or more members without identifying them fully: algun problema, alguna idea, alguns llibres, algunes fotos. It normally comes before the noun without an article, and descriptive adjectives normally follow: alguna proposta interessant.
Conec algun restaurant tranquil a prop de l'estació.
I know a quiet restaurant near the station.
Alguns veïns han sentit soroll, però ningú no ha vist res.
Some neighbors heard a noise, but nobody saw anything.
In a question, algun can suggest that a positive answer is plausible or invited. A teacher asking Alguna pregunta? actively opens the floor and may expect questions. This is not an absolute rule about expectation, but it explains why algun and cap can produce different conversational effects.
Tens alguna pregunta sobre el contracte?
Do you have a question about the contract? (the speaker invites or anticipates one)
With a definite set, use a partitive complement: algun dels llibres, alguna de les candidates. The article belongs inside de + the set; do not put an article between algun and an ordinary noun.
Cap is licensed by an open or negative context
Cap is invariable. In questions and conditional clauses, it commonly means “any at all,” without asserting that the item exists. In a negative clause, it means “no/not any” together with clause negation.
Tens cap pregunta sobre el contracte?
Do you have any questions about the contract? (neutral about whether there are any)
Si tens cap dubte, truca'm abans de signar.
If you have any doubt, call me before signing.
No queda cap habitació lliure per a dissabte.
There isn't any free room left for Saturday.
This is called polarity licensing: the question, condition, or negation creates a context in which existence is not simply asserted. English also favors any in these environments, but Catalan normally uses singular cap + noun where English often has a plural: cap pregunta “no questions/any questions,” cap error “no errors/any errors.” Lexically plural nouns remain plural, as in no tinc cap ganes de discutir.
Cap can also accompany certain noncount nouns, especially with the sense “no kind or degree of”: cap culpa, cap gràcia, cap interès. It can stand for a recoverable noun as well: No en queda cap “There aren't any left.” Do not confuse that use with res, the invariable pronoun “anything/nothing.” Res replaces a thing phrase—No hem rebut res—but it cannot directly determine a noun.
No en queda cap, i no hi podem fer res.
There aren't any left, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Compare the minimal pair:
Busco algun hotel que tingui aparcament.
I'm looking for some hotel that has parking. (I expect a suitable one to exist)
No busco cap hotel; em quedaré a casa d'uns amics.
I'm not looking for any hotel; I'll stay at some friends' place.
When cap is inside a postverbal phrase, ordinary negation requires no: No ha vingut cap tècnic. Preverbal negative constituents have additional negative-concord options, treated on the Negative Words page.
Ningun is real Catalan, but regional
The resemblance between Spanish ningún/ninguna and Catalan ningun/ninguna is misleading for learners. In the Central baseline and in general formal usage, cap is the normal choice: No tinc cap problema.
(informal) (regional: Valencian, Eivissenc, and Alguerese) singular ningun/ninguna is used adjectivally or pronominally alongside cap: No tinc ningun problema; No en queda ninguna. In formal texts across the language area, cap is the broadly shared form. The regional pattern is singular; do not invent ninguns/ningunes by extending the four-form Spanish paradigm.
No tinc cap inconvenient a canviar l'hora.
I have no objection to changing the time. (general standard)
No té ningun problema.
He has no problem. (informal; regional: Valencian, Eivissenc, and Alguerese)
Regional forms should be used as a coherent variety, not dropped into otherwise Central prose because they look familiar from Spanish.
Qualsevol expresses free choice
Singular qualsevol is invariable for gender: qualsevol llibre, qualsevol persona. Its plural is qualssevol, not qualsevols: qualssevol llibres, qualssevol persones. In Central pronunciation, the singular and plural may sound alike, so the written distinction deserves deliberate attention.
Pots seure en qualsevol cadira lliure.
You can sit in any free chair.
Acceptarem qualssevol propostes viables que arribin abans de divendres.
We will accept any viable proposals that arrive before Friday.
Before a noun, qualsevol gives an unrestricted choice: any member will do. After a noun introduced by un/una, it often means “some random/ordinary one,” and with a person it can sound dismissive. The order therefore changes the discourse effect.
Vine qualsevol dia que et vagi bé.
Come any day that suits you.
No és un metge qualsevol: dirigeix tota la unitat.
He isn't just any doctor: he runs the whole unit.
Plural qualssevol can likewise follow a numeral or noun phrase: tres exemples qualssevol means three examples chosen without restriction. When selecting from a definite set, use qualsevol dels arxius or plural qualssevol d'aquestes opcions.
Position and determiner combinations
Algun, cap, and prenominal qualsevol occupy the determiner zone and do not take a definite article directly: algun llibre, not l'algun llibre; cap resposta, not la cap resposta. They can combine with altre: alguna altra opció, cap altre problema, qualsevol altra data. In a subset construction, the definite determiner comes after de: algunes de les respostes, cap d'aquests errors.
Ordinary descriptive adjectives normally follow the noun: alguna notícia important, cap explicació convincent, qualsevol ruta segura. Prenominal adjectives remain possible when their own meaning calls for that position, but English word order alone is not a reason to move them.
The agreement system is shared by Central and Valencian standards: alguna/algunes and qualsevol/qualssevol do not change. The relevant regional choice is cap versus informal ningun/ninguna, not a license to mix their paradigms.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English plural any after cap.
❌ No he rebut caps missatges.
Incorrect — cap is invariable and normally selects a singular count noun.
✅ No he rebut cap missatge.
I haven't received any messages.
2. Adding an article before an ordinary noun.
❌ Necessitem alguna la solució ràpida.
Incorrect — algun directly determines the noun; no article intervenes.
✅ Necessitem alguna solució ràpida.
We need some quick solution.
3. Forming the plural of qualsevol mechanically.
❌ Pots portar qualsevols sabates còmodes.
Incorrect — the plural is qualssevol.
✅ Pots portar qualssevol sabates còmodes.
You can wear any comfortable shoes.
4. Confusing the human pronoun ningú with a determiner.
❌ No tinc ningú dubte sobre això.
Incorrect — ningú is a human pronoun and cannot determine dubte.
✅ No tinc cap dubte sobre això.
I have no doubt about that.
5. Putting every modifier before the noun.
❌ Busquem alguna interessant proposta per al barri.
Unnatural neutral order — the descriptive adjective normally follows the noun.
✅ Busquem alguna proposta interessant per al barri.
We're looking for an interesting proposal for the neighborhood.
Key Takeaways
Use agreeing algun to assert or anticipate one or more members. Use invariable cap, normally with a singular noun, in open and negative environments. Treat ningun/ninguna as an informal Valencian, Eivissenc, or Alguerese option rather than the Central default. Use gender-invariable qualsevol for unrestricted singular choice and qualssevol for plural choice; postnominal un/una ... qualsevol often means “an ordinary/random one.”
