Catalan distinguishes an exact pair from a small indefinite quantity. For “both,” ordinary speech often uses tots dos/totes dues, while ambdós/ambdues belongs mainly to formal prose. For “several,” diversos/diverses and uns quants/unes quantes overlap, but they differ in tone and in the additional “varied” reading of diversos.
None of these is simply an invariant English-style word placed before a noun. Gender agreement, article choice, prior mention, and register all help shape the phrase.
Compact paradigm
| Meaning | Masculine | Feminine | Number | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| both | ambdós | ambdues | plural only | (formal) |
| both | tots dos | totes dues | plural only | general; ordinary speech |
| several; various | diversos | diverses | plural in quantifier use | general, frequent in writing |
| a few; several | uns quants | unes quantes | plural only | general; conversational |
La Marta i la Laia, totes dues investigadores catalanes, estaven preparades per respondre.
Marta and Laia, both Catalan researchers, were ready to answer.
S'han presentat dos informes; ambdós documents necessiten una signatura.
Two reports have been submitted; both documents need a signature. (the second phrase is formal)
The first example carries feminine plural agreement through totes, dues, investigadores, catalanes, and preparades. The second first establishes a two-member set and then resumes it with formal ambdós. There is no singular ambdó meaning “either one.”
Tots dos and totes dues: ordinary both
In the Central baseline, tots dos and totes dues are natural when exactly two previously mentioned members form the relevant set. The noun can be present or omitted: tots dos llibres; totes dues; els conec tots dos.
L'autora ha publicat dues novel·les i presentarà tots dos llibres aquesta tarda.
The author has published two novels and will present both books this afternoon.
La Jana i la Núria ja han arribat; totes dues esperen a fora.
Jana and Núria have already arrived; both are waiting outside.
The construction contains no article: tots dos llibres, not tots dos els llibres. Tot agrees with the understood set. In the Central baseline, the cardinal also distinguishes masculine dos from feminine dues.
(regional: especially Valencian) Dos can instead be invariable for gender, giving coherent feminine phrases such as totes dos investigadores. Use Central totes dues as the teaching baseline; do not combine its feminine numeral with masculine tots to create tots dues.
This construction has an important discourse restriction. It works best when the two-member set is already known and the noun has no new restriction. If the phrase itself identifies the pair—especially with a relative clause—use the definite article plus the numeral: els dos llibres que queden, les dues candidates que han superat la prova.
Porta els dos llibres que queden damunt la taula.
Bring the two books that are left on the table.
Porta tots dos llibres; ja saps quins dic.
Bring both books; you know which ones I mean.
This minimal pair is not a difference in arithmetic: both phrases denote two books. Els dos llibres que queden lets the relative clause identify the pair; tots dos llibres treats an already salient pair as exhaustively included.
The tot + numeral construction is not equally usual in every Catalan variety. Speakers whose variety does not use it normally say els dos/les dues. This is a genuine dialectal distribution, not a reason to combine the two frames as tots dos els.
Ambdós and ambdues: concise but formal
(formal) ambdós and ambdues also refer to exactly two already mentioned entities. They may determine a noun or stand alone: ambdós acords, ambdues parts, la resposta d'ambdós. They do not take an article in the basic pattern.
Ambdues parts signaran l'acord abans de divendres.
Both parties will sign the agreement before Friday. (formal)
L'informe analitza ambdós escenaris i n'avalua els riscos.
The report analyzes both scenarios and assesses their risks. (formal)
In relaxed conversation, tots dos/totes dues or els dos/les dues will usually sound less institutional. Ambdós is not archaic: it is productive in legal, administrative, technical, and edited journalistic writing. The accent and internal d matter. Spanish ambos is a misleading cognate; ambos is not the standard Catalan form.
Diversos and diverses: several or varied
Before a noun, diversos/diverses commonly means “several”: more than two, without giving an exact total. It agrees in gender but, in this quantifying meaning, is plural.
Diverses mesures noves han estat aprovades aquesta setmana.
Several new measures have been approved this week.
Hem parlat amb diversos tècnics especialitzats abans de decidir.
We spoke with several specialized technicians before deciding.
Position can shift the center of meaning. Prenominal diversos problemes normally counts an indefinite plurality, “several problems.” Postnominal problemes diversos classifies them as different or varied problems. Context can blur the boundary, but the minimal contrast is useful.
El projecte planteja diversos problemes.
The project raises several problems.
El projecte planteja problemes diversos, des del cost fins a l'impacte ambiental.
The project raises varied problems, from cost to environmental impact.
Do not use a singular form to mean “several.” Singular divers/diversa is an adjective meaning diverse or different in kind, not a singular quantity word.
Uns quants and unes quantes: a few, an unspecified handful
Uns quants/unes quantes presents a small or moderate number conversationally. Both words agree with the noun: uns quants correus, unes quantes trucades. The construction already contains uns/unes, so it does not take another article.
Ens falten uns quants detalls, però la feina principal ja està feta.
We're missing a few details, but the main work is already done.
He convidat unes quantes amigues a sopar dissabte.
I've invited a few friends over for dinner on Saturday.
With an omitted but recoverable noun, agreement remains: En vols uns quants? En necessito unes quantes. The partitive pronoun itself is treated in Partitive En.
Compared with diversos, uns quants is more explicitly approximate and often more conversational. It does not itself mean “varied”: unes quantes idees counts ideas, while idees diverses highlights their variety.
Determiner order and modifiers
The neutral patterns are ambdues propostes viables, totes dues propostes viables, diverses propostes viables, and unes quantes propostes viables. An ordinary descriptive adjective follows the noun. A demonstrative or article is not added indiscriminately: use the complete licensed frame rather than stacking English “both + the” word for word.
The forms here are part of the shared standard, including Central and Valencian Catalan. Actual preference for tots dos versus els dos varies among speakers and dialects; keep one natural pattern coherent rather than mixing the internal syntax of both.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English invariant both.
❌ Tots dos noies han confirmat l'assistència.
Incorrect — a feminine pair requires totes dues.
✅ Totes dues noies han confirmat l'assistència.
Both girls have confirmed that they will attend.
2. Inserting an article inside tots dos.
❌ He llegit tots dos els llibres.
Incorrect — this mixes two different determiner frames.
✅ He llegit tots dos llibres.
I've read both books. (the pair is already known)
3. Using the Spanish-looking form ambos.
❌ Ambos informes arriben a la mateixa conclusió.
Incorrect — standard Catalan has formal ambdós or ordinary tots dos/els dos.
✅ Ambdós informes arriben a la mateixa conclusió.
Both reports reach the same conclusion. (formal)
4. Failing to agree both parts of uns quants.
❌ He fet uns quants trucades urgents.
Incorrect — both elements must agree with feminine plural trucades.
✅ He fet unes quantes trucades urgents.
I've made a few urgent calls.
5. Moving a neutral descriptive adjective before the noun.
❌ Han proposat diverses útils mesures.
Unnatural neutral order — útils normally follows the noun.
✅ Han proposat diverses mesures útils.
They have proposed several useful measures.
Key Takeaways
Use ordinary tots dos/totes dues for both members of an already salient pair, but els dos/les dues when the phrase itself identifies the two or that is your variety's normal pattern. Reserve ambdós/ambdues chiefly for formal prose. Agree diversos/diverses and uns quants/unes quantes with the noun; remember that postnominal diversos tends toward “varied,” while uns quants simply gives an approximate small number.
