A or En for Place

English encourages a simple equation: to = a and in/at = en. Catalan does not make that division. A regularly marks a destination, but it also locates people and things; in Central Catalan, both “I am going to Girona” and “I live in Girona” use a Girona. For a static location, en becomes especially natural before an indefinite article, a demonstrative, a quantifier, or an interrogative.

Spanish is not a safer template: Spanish en Barcelona corresponds to Central Catalan a Barcelona. Conversely, the wider static en of Valencian is a Catalan regional system, not permission to translate every Spanish en mechanically.

The choice is therefore not “movement versus no movement” by itself. First identify the relation expressed by the verb, then inspect the noun phrase, and finally keep the regional standard consistent. This page uses contemporary Central Catalan as its unlabelled baseline.

For fuller inventories of each preposition outside this choice, see the uses of a and the uses of en.

The decision workflow

Use these questions in order:

  1. Is the place an endpoint of movement? Choose a as the reliable default: anar a, arribar a, tornar a.
  2. Is it a static place name? Choose a: a Vic, a Andorra, a Mallorca.
  3. Is it a familiar definite location? Central Catalan normally favors a: a la cuina, al banc, a l'escola.
  4. Does the static noun phrase begin with an indefinite article, algun, or a demonstrative? Central Catalan generally favors en: en una oficina, en aquest carrer, en algun calaix. With other quantifiers and interrogatives, both a and en occur, so follow the surrounding variety consistently.
  5. Are you following a Valencian model? (regional: Valencian) Static en extends naturally to many definite locations: en la plaça, en l'estació. Do not alternate randomly between regional patterns inside formal prose.
  6. Does the verb govern a preposition of its own? Keep that government. Pensar en un lloc means “think about a place”; it is not an answer to the location rule.

💡
Do not translate the English preposition first. Build the Catalan phrase from the role of the place and the kind of determiner that introduces it.

Direction and position are the first contrast

Directional a marks a goal. It contracts with el and els to form al and als, but not with la, les, or an elided article: al mercat, als jardins, a la plaça, a l'aeroport. The same a can mark a settled location, so the verb and context tell you whether movement is involved.

Here are two closely controlled pairs. In each pair the place phrase stays constant while the verb changes its relation to that place.

La Clara va al consultori després de dinar.

Clara is going to the clinic after lunch. (destination)

La Clara és al consultori fins a les cinc.

Clara is at the clinic until five. (position)

Aquest vespre tornem a Figueres.

This evening we're returning to Figueres. (destination)

Aquest vespre dormim a Figueres.

This evening we're sleeping in Figueres. (position)

The pairs show why the slogan “a means to” fails. A can express either relation. With a proper place name, it is the normal shared-standard choice in both.

Static location: how the noun phrase is presented

For static location, Central Catalan distinguishes a familiar point from a place introduced or selected within a set. A definite institution often behaves like an established point; an indefinite or demonstrative phrase makes the setting itself more prominent.

L'Oriol treballa a l'arxiu municipal.

Oriol works at the municipal archive. (established institution)

L'Oriol treballa en un arxiu privat.

Oriol works in a private archive. (one indefinite setting)

Deixa les carpetes a la sala del fons.

Leave the folders in the room at the back. (identified destination)

Les carpetes són en aquesta sala, no pas a recepció.

The folders are in this room, not at reception. (demonstrative location)

Ens esperen a l'hotel de sempre.

They're waiting for us at our usual hotel. (familiar definite place)

Ens esperen en un hotel prop del port.

They're waiting for us in a hotel near the port. (indefinite setting)

Those are three more minimal contrasts: a l'arxiu / en un arxiu, a la sala / en aquesta sala, and a l'hotel / en un hotel. They do not describe an outside-versus-inside distinction. The articles and discourse status change how the listener is asked to identify the place.

Interrogatives allow more overlap. A known venue can be asked about with On és la presentació? and answered with a la sala gran. To select one room among several, both A quina sala és la presentació? and En quina sala és la presentació? are standard; a is widespread in Central usage, while en can foreground the setting and is especially natural in varieties with wider static en.

La bicicleta és en algun pati interior, però no recordo en quin.

The bicycle is in some inner courtyard, but I don't remember which one.

💡
Before un, algun, aquest, aquell, static en is a useful Central learner default, but static a is also standard in many such contexts. Direction normally selects a: Anem a aquell poble means “We're going to that village.”

Six contrasts at a glance

The surrounding context resolves English prompts that are ambiguous on their own.

English promptCatalan with contextReason
“at the workshop”Ja són al taller habitual.familiar definite point
“in a workshop”Són en un taller sense finestres.indefinite setting
“in the building”La conserge és a l'edifici principal.identified institutional point
“in this building”La conserge és en aquest edifici.demonstrative selection
“to the village”Demà anirem al poble.destination
“in the village”Demà serem al poble.static, familiar definite place

Counting the three paired examples above and these three table contrasts gives six minimal comparisons. Notice that English in can become either a or en, while English to normally leads to a.

Where both choices can occur

The standard language permits overlap, especially with static definite noun phrases. In Central usage, Treballa al laboratori presents the laboratory as the workplace; Treballa en el laboratori can foreground its interior as the setting. This is a subtle construal difference, not a rigid rule about physical boundaries.

Before an indefinite destination, both a and en are documented: Ens traslladem a un pis més gran is a dependable general choice; Ens traslladem en un pis més gran can also occur. At A2, use directional a consistently and reserve the strong Central preference for en for unambiguously static phrases.

(regional: Valencian) In many Valencian varieties, static en occurs much more freely before definite articles. (regional: Northwestern) Wider static en also occurs in parts of the northwest. (regional: Balearic) and (regional: Northern) local distributions differ in detail, but there is no need to imitate a mixed pan-dialectal system. (formal) Choose one recognized regional standard and apply it consistently. IEC and AVL norms accommodate their respective standard patterns.

Dialogue: established place or one place among several?

—La reunió és a la biblioteca? —Sí, a la biblioteca del barri, com sempre.

—Is the meeting at the library? —Yes, at the neighborhood library, as usual.

—Però en quina sala ens trobem? —En aquesta sala petita, al costat de l'ascensor.

—But which room are we meeting in? —In this small room, next to the lift.

Here a la biblioteca treats the venue as shared information. En quina sala and en aquesta sala select and identify a setting. Changing the determiner while keeping a everywhere would erase a useful Central contrast; changing everything to en would instead sound regionally Valencian rather than neutral Central.

Correction task

Correct the genuine preposition or contraction errors in these sentences.

  1. Arribarem en Tortosa cap a migdia.
  2. Portarem les mostres en aquell laboratori.
  3. Sempre penso a aquell refugi quan fa fred.
  4. Hem quedat a el vestíbul a dos quarts de nou.

Answers: arribarem a Tortosa (destination plus place name); portarem les mostres a aquell laboratori (direction takes a); penso en aquell refugi (the verb governs en); al vestíbul (mandatory contraction).

Common Mistakes

❌ Visc en Sabadell des del 2020.

Incorrect in the shared Central baseline: a place name takes a.

✅ Visc a Sabadell des del 2020.

I've lived in Sabadell since 2020.

❌ Demà pugem en aquell mirador.

For an ordinary destination, use directional a.

✅ Demà pugem a aquell mirador.

Tomorrow we're going up to that viewpoint.

❌ T'espero a el quiosc de la cantonada.

A plus el must contract to al.

✅ T'espero al quiosc de la cantonada.

I'll wait for you at the kiosk on the corner.

Key Takeaways

  • Use a for ordinary destinations, proper place names, and familiar definite locations in the Central baseline.
  • Favor en for static phrases introduced by an indefinite article, demonstrative, quantifier, or interrogative.
  • A is not only “to,” and en is not automatically “in.” Verb meaning and discourse packaging come first.
  • Valencian and some Northwestern usage extend static en further. That is legitimate regional grammar, not an error.
  • Keep verb-governed prepositions separate from the place decision, contract a + el/els, and stay consistent in formal writing.
