The Preposition En

The preposition en most often places something within a setting: en una capsa, en aquest carrer, en silenci. It also appears with means of transport, spans of time, and words that select it as a complement. English in, on, at, by, and within overlap with these uses, but none is a dependable one-word equivalent.

Do not confuse prepositional en, followed by its complement, with the unstressed pronoun en in en vull dos (“I want two of them”). They are spelled alike but occupy different structural positions.

Form and a first decision table

Unlike a, de, and per, en does not contract with the definite article. Write en el, en els, en la, and en les. It does not elide before vowels: en un, en aquesta, en octubre.

Les còpies són en un calaix de l’arxivador blau.

The copies are in a drawer of the blue filing cabinet.

En aquesta habitació no hi toca gaire el sol a l’hivern.

This room doesn’t get much sun in winter.

💡
There is no contraction en + el in contemporary standard Catalan. En el document is two words. The form nel, familiar from Italian, is not standard Catalan.

Static location and the competition with a

In the Central Catalan teaching baseline, a is usual with place names and definite familiar locations: a Barcelona, a l’oficina, a la plaça. En is particularly natural when the noun phrase begins with an indefinite article, demonstrative, quantifier, or interrogative: en un hotel, en aquesta oficina, en moltes cases, en quin poble.

La Joana treballa a l’hospital, però avui treballa en una clínica privada del centre.

Joana works at the hospital, but today she is working in a private clinic downtown.

—En quin prestatge has deixat el diccionari? —Al de dalt, al costat de la finestra.

—Which shelf did you leave the dictionary on? —The top one, next to the window.

The first minimal pair is not merely stylistic. A l’hospital presents the hospital as the familiar institutional location; en un hospital introduces one hospital as an indefinite setting. Definiteness, discourse status, and region all interact with the choice. A versus En for Location treats the full system.

Valencian commonly uses en in a wider range of static locative contexts, including some definite ones where Central speech prefers a. This is an accepted regional pattern, not an error. Northwestern and other varieties also differ in detail. Consistency with the chosen standard variety matters more than mechanically replacing every Spanish en with Catalan en.

The locative phrase is normally replaceable by hi:

Els contractes són en aquella carpeta; si no hi són, pregunta-ho a recepció.

The contracts are in that folder; if they aren’t there, ask at reception.

Negation precedes the clitic (no hi són) and does not change the preposition selected in the full phrase.

Means of transport

En presents a vehicle as the means by which someone travels: en tren, en autobús, en bicicleta, en avió. The construction has no article when the noun denotes the general mode. A specified vehicle can take a determiner: en el tren de les vuit.

Normalment hi vaig en bicicleta, però avui agafaré el tren de les vuit.

I normally go there by bike, but today I’ll take the eight o’clock train.

Vam travessar la frontera en un autocar ple d’estudiants.

We crossed the border in a coach full of students.

English uses by for the general mode but on/in for an individual vehicle; Catalan can retain en in both. Standard Catalan also allows amb with vehicles (hi anirem amb cotxe); the balance between en and amb varies by speaker and region rather than encoding a strict semantic contrast. A peu, however, is fixed: not en peu for “on foot.”

Time: the frame and the time required

With a duration, en can state how long an action takes to reach completion. It does not simply state how long a continuing situation lasts.

La tècnica va reparar la pantalla en mitja hora.

The technician repaired the screen in half an hour.

La tècnica va reparar pantalles durant mitja hora.

The technician repaired screens for half an hour.

This minimal pair is a scope contrast. En mitja hora measures the interval up to a completed result; durant mitja hora measures the activity itself, whether or not anything was completed. English in half an hour versus for half an hour gives a useful parallel here.

En also anchors events inside a broader period: en aquell moment, en ple hivern, en temps de crisi. Calendar dates and parts of the day have their own conventions: Central Catalan normally says al matí, a la tarda, and often el 2026 or l’any 2026, not a blanket translation of Spanish en la mañana or English in 2026. See prepositions of time.

Manner, state, and selected expressions

A limited but common set of expressions uses en to frame the state or manner in which an event occurs: en silenci, en secret, en veu alta, en dejú, en broma, en fila. These are learned combinations, not a rule that licenses en + any abstract noun.

Quan la nena s’adormi, parleu en veu baixa i tanqueu la porta sense fer soroll.

When the girl falls asleep, speak quietly and close the door without making noise.

T’ho va dir en broma; no volia que t’ho prenguessis malament.

He said it as a joke; he didn’t want you to take it badly.

Compare escriure en català (the language serving as expressive medium) and parlar de català in a specialized discussion (Catalan as the topic). The preposition determines the role, not just the noun that follows.

Words that select en

Common verbs include confiar en, pensar en, creure en, insistir en, participar en, and fixar-se en. Adjectival combinations include interessat en and expert en. English and Spanish government cannot safely be copied: memorize the Catalan combination as a unit.

Confio en la Mireia perquè sempre compleix el que promet.

I trust Mireia because she always does what she promises.

El sindicat insisteix en aquest punt i hi insistirà fins que l’empresa respongui.

The union insists on this point and will keep insisting on it until the company responds.

Here hi replaces en aquest punt. The spelling en in en aquest punt is a preposition; the pronoun later is hi, not en. Before infinitives and finite que clauses, formal selection rules can alter or suppress the preposition: insistir a fer-ho is traditional formal usage, and insistir que ho facin has no en before que. Those advanced alternations are covered in preposition change before an infinitive and preposition drop before que.

💡
Learn a selected preposition together with its clitic pattern: pensar en el problema → pensar-hi. The replacement is an excellent test that en belongs to the verb’s complement rather than being a free location phrase.

Word order, scope, and no stranding

Catalan can move an en phrase to the left as a topic, normally resuming it with hi. Moving it does not turn it into a detached English-style phrase.

En aquella proposta que vam rebre ahir, el comitè no hi confia gens.

The committee has no confidence at all in that proposal we received yesterday.

With relatives and questions, keep the preposition before the interrogative or relative form: En què penses?, el projecte en què participem. English allows What are you thinking about? with a stranded preposition; standard Catalan does not normally imitate that order.

A natural dialogue

—Com hi anireu, a la fira? —En tren. Dormirem en un hostal prop del recinte i hi arribarem en deu minuts a peu.

—How are you getting to the fair? —By train. We’ll sleep in a hostel near the venue and get there in ten minutes on foot.

The dialogue combines means (en tren), an indefinite static setting (en un hostal), and time to completion (en deu minuts). The final a peu illustrates why English in/by cannot be mapped mechanically.

Common Mistakes

❌ Les claus són en el calaix? Sí, en són.

Incorrect — a locative phrase is replaced by hi, not by the identically spelled pronoun en.

✅ Les claus són en el calaix? Sí, hi són.

Are the keys in the drawer? Yes, they’re there.

❌ Anirem en peu fins al refugi.

Incorrect — ‘on foot’ is the fixed phrase a peu.

✅ Anirem a peu fins al refugi.

We’ll walk to the refuge.

❌ Visc en Barcelona des del setembre.

Avoid mechanically preserving Spanish en in the Central baseline with a city name.

✅ Visc a Barcelona des del setembre.

I’ve lived in Barcelona since September.

❌ Va treballar en dues hores i després va plegar.

Incorrect for a two-hour ongoing duration; en presents time to completion.

✅ Va treballar durant dues hores i després va plegar.

She worked for two hours and then stopped.

❌ El projecte que participem començarà demà.

Incorrect — participar selects en, and Catalan does not strand or erase it in the relative.

✅ El projecte en què participem començarà demà.

The project we are participating in will start tomorrow.

Short correction task

Correct en peu, en la tarda, and el curs que participo in the Central standard baseline. The expected forms are a peu, a la tarda, and el curs en què participo. Each correction depends on a Catalan construction, not on the English word in.

Key Takeaways

  • En is especially common for static location before indefinite, demonstrative, quantified, and interrogative phrases.
  • Use it for transport (en tren), completion time (en una hora), established manner phrases, and selected complements.
  • Do not contract en el, and do not confuse prepositional en with the weak pronoun en.
  • Locative and selected en phrases are commonly replaced by hi.
  • Keep en with relative and interrogative forms rather than copying English preposition stranding.
