Root Hamza versus Hamzat al-Waṣl in Verbs

An alif at the beginning of an Arabic verb can represent very different things. It may carry a root hamza, it may be the fixed hamzat al-qaṭʿ built into Form IV, or it may support the elidable hamzat al-waṣl of Forms VII–X or an imperative. The spelling and connected pronunciation follow from that analysis—not from the fact that all three may look like an initial alif in unvocalized text.

English speakers often treat a written initial vowel as a stable sound. Arabic instead asks two questions: does hamza belong to the root or pattern, and is the word being started or connected to what precedes it? Hamzat al-qaṭʿ is pronounced in both positions. Hamzat al-waṣl supplies a vowel only when speech begins with the word; its alif remains in spelling when its vowel disappears in connected speech. The imperative-formation lesson gives the full jussive-to-command derivation used here.

Three sources of initial alif

SourceExampleAnalysisAfter a preceding vowel
root hamzaأَكَلَ / يَأْكُلُForm I, root ء-ك-لhamza remains pronounced
Form IV pattern hamzaأَرْسَلَ / يُرْسِلُ / إِرْسَالًاForm IV, root ر-س-لhamza remains pronounced
hamzat al-waṣlاِنْطَلَقَ / يَنْطَلِقُ / اِنْطِلَاقًاForm VII, root ط-ل-قinitial vowel disappears

The root of أرسل is ر-س-ل, not ء-ر-س-ل: the initial hamza belongs to the Form IV pattern. By contrast, hamza is genuinely the first radical of أكل. In انطلق, neither the alif nor a hamza is a root radical; the root is ط-ل-ق, and the initial alif supports hamzat al-waṣl.

أكلت نادية شيئا خفيفا ثم أرسلت التقرير

ʾakalat nādiyatu shayʾan khafīfan thumma ʾarsalati t-taqrīr

Nadia ate something light, then sent the report. (Both the root hamza of أكل and Form IV hamza of أرسل are pronounced.)

انطلق القطار في موعده، ثم استأنفنا الحديث

inṭalaqa l-qiṭāru fī mawʿidihi, thumma staʾnafnā l-ḥadīth

The train departed on time, then we resumed the conversation. (The initial vowel of استأنفنا is elided after ثم; its internal root hamza remains.)

In استأنف “resume,” Form X supplies initial hamzat al-waṣl, while the root ء-ن-ف supplies the later hamza. One word can therefore contain both phenomena. Connected thumma staʾnafnā drops only the initial helping vowel; it does not erase the root radical.

💡
Do not classify hamza by position alone. Identify the root and Form from verified principal parts, then ask whether the initial element is a radical, fixed Form IV hamza, or hamzat al-waṣl.

Form IV keeps hamzat al-qaṭʿ

Form IV has the principal-part pattern أَفْعَلَ — يُفْعِلُ — إِفْعَالًا. Its perfect, imperative, and verbal noun begin with hamzat al-qaṭʿ. The imperfect has its normal person prefix and no initial hamza: أرسلَ — يرسلُ — إرسالًا, imperative أرسلْ.

راجع العنوان ثم أرسل النسخة النهائية إلى المحررة

rājiʿi l-ʿunwāna thumma ʾarsili n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata ʾilā l-muḥarrira

Check the address, then send the final copy to the editor. (One male addressee; the hamza of أرسل remains audible after ثم.)

أعلنت الوزارة القرار، وأوضحت أسبابه في بيان منفصل

ʾaʿlanati l-wizāratu l-qarāra, wa-ʾawḍaḥat ʾasbābahu fī bayānin munfaṣil

The ministry announced the decision and explained its reasons in a separate statement. (formal)

Form IV أعلنَ / يعلنُ / إعلانًا is from ع-ل-ن; أوضحَ / يوضحُ / إيضاحًا is from و-ض-ح. Their initial hamza is not optional in spelling or speech. The conjunction و does not turn أوضح into a waṣl form: connected pronunciation is wa-ʾawḍaḥat, with a clear glottal onset.

The same distinction holds across mood. لن governs the subjunctive imperfect, but it does not alter the lexical identity of the verb or create an initial hamza.

لن يؤجل المدير الاجتماع، وسيعلن النتيجة اليوم

lan yuʾajjila l-mudīru l-ijtimāʿa, wa-sayuʿlinu n-natījata l-yawm

The director will not postpone the meeting and will announce the result today. (لن governs subjunctive يؤجل.)

Forms VII–X begin with hamzat al-waṣl

In the perfect, verbal noun, and relevant imperatives of Forms VII, VIII, IX, and X, the initial alif carries hamzat al-waṣl. These forms are pronounced with initial i when begun in isolation, but the vowel and glottal onset disappear after a pronounced vowel.

These are verified lexical verbs: Form VII انطلق “set off” from ط-ل-ق, Form VIII اجتمع “meet” from ج-م-ع, Form IX احمرّ “turn red” from ح-م-ر, and Form X استخدم “use” from خ-د-م. The Form labels describe stem structure; they do not let you manufacture a meaning for any root.

وصلت الباحثتان واجتمعتا برئيسة القسم قبل الندوة

waṣalati l-bāḥithatāni wajtamaʿatā biraʾīsati l-qismi qabla n-nadwa

The two researchers arrived and met with the department head before the seminar. (Subject-first feminine dual agreement.)

استخدموا المدخل الشرقي، ثم انتظروا في القاعة الرئيسية

istakhdimū l-madkhala sh-sharqiyya, thumma ntaẓirū fī l-qāʿati r-raʾīsiyya

Use the eastern entrance, then wait in the main hall. (A male or mixed group.)

The second command is connected to ثمَّ, so written انتظروا remains unchanged while its initial i is absent from the romanized connected pronunciation. By contrast, the first command begins the utterance and is istakhdimū.

انطلق المتسابقون عند الإشارة، واستمر السباق ساعتين

inṭalaqa l-mutasābiqūna ʿinda l-ʾishārati, wastamarra s-sibāqu sāʿatayn

The competitors set off at the signal, and the race continued for two hours. (Neutral verb-first انطلق is singular before its overt plural subject.)

Form I imperatives add a separate hamzat al-waṣl

A regular Form I imperative may need hamzat al-waṣl after the second-person prefix is removed from the jussive: لم تكتبْ → اكتبْ. This initial support is not a root radical. If the verb itself is hamzated, another hamza may remain inside the command: سألَ / يسألُ, jussive تسألْ, imperative اسألْ.

اكتب الملاحظات واسأل المحاضرة عن المصدر الأخير

uktubi l-mulāḥaẓāti wasʾali l-muḥāḍirata ʿani l-maṣdari l-ʾakhīr

Write down the notes and ask the lecturer about the final source. (One male addressee.)

Connected wasʾal elides the helping vowel but preserves the root hamza of سأل. English has no comparable split between a written support vowel and a consonantal root hamza, so memorizing “initial alif is silent” produces both spelling and pronunciation errors.

💡
Test connected pronunciation with وَ or ثُمَّ. If a real hamza remains—وَأَرْسَلَ wa-ʾarsala—you have hamzat al-qaṭʿ. If only the written alif remains—وَاسْتَخْدَمَ wastakhdama—you have hamzat al-waṣl.

Common Mistakes

Dropping Form IV hamza after a conjunction

❌ راجع العنوان ثم ارسل الرسالة

Incorrect spelling—Form IV أرسل begins with hamzat al-qaṭʿ, which remains written and pronounced.

✅ راجع العنوان ثم أرسل الرسالة إلى المحررة

rājiʿi l-ʿunwāna thumma ʾarsili r-risālata ʾilā l-muḥarrira

Check the address, then send the message to the editor. (One male addressee.)

Pronouncing hamzat al-waṣl inside connected speech

❌ ثم استخدموا المدخل الخلفي

thumma istakhdimū l-madkhala l-khalfī

Incorrect connected reading—the written alif of استخدموا remains, but its initial vowel is elided after ثم.

✅ ثم استخدموا المدخل الخلفي عند المغادرة

thumma stakhdimū l-madkhala l-khalfiyya ʿinda l-mughādara

Then use the rear entrance when leaving. (A male or mixed group.)

Erasing a root hamza together with hamzat al-waṣl

❌ واسأل المشرفة

wasal al-mushrifa

Incorrect—the initial helping vowel elides, but the root hamza in سأل remains: wasʾal.

✅ واسأل المشرفة عن الموعد

wasʾali l-mushrifata ʿani l-mawʿid

And ask the supervisor about the appointment. (One male addressee.)

Treating Form IV as if it were Form X

❌ ثم اعلن المدير النتيجة

Incorrect spelling—أعلن is Form IV and requires أ, not the plain alif used for hamzat al-waṣl.

✅ ثم أعلن المدير النتيجة

thumma ʾaʿlana l-mudīru n-natīja

Then the director announced the result.

Using full plural agreement in neutral VSO

❌ انطلقوا المتسابقون عند الإشارة

Incorrect as neutral verb-first order with an overt plural subject—use singular انطلق before المتسابقون.

✅ انطلق المتسابقون عند الإشارة

inṭalaqa l-mutasābiqūna ʿinda l-ʾishāra

The competitors set off at the signal.

Key Takeaways

  • A root hamza is part of the lexical root; Form IV hamza belongs to the pattern; hamzat al-waṣl is a pronounceability device.
  • Form IV أفعل retains hamza in connected speech, while Forms VII–X lose their initial waṣl vowel after a preceding vowel.
  • Spelling does not delete hamzat al-waṣl: واستخدم is written with alif even though it is pronounced wastakhdama.
  • A word such as استأنف can contain initial hamzat al-waṣl and a separate root hamza.
  • Agreement and mood remain independent of hamza type: analyze the entire verb form, not only its first letter.
