اِحْتَاجَ is the standard verb for “need,” “require,” and “be in need of.” It governs إلى before the needed person, thing, or action: يحتاج إلى وقت “needs time,” احتجنا إلى مساعدتها “we needed her help,” and يحتاج إلى أن يراجع “needs to review.” English puts its object directly after need, so remembering إلى is the most important syntactic habit on this page.
Morphologically, احتاج is a hollow Form-VIII verb from ح-و-ج. The middle radical و has contracted into long ا in the visible long stem, but it reappears as ي in the verbal noun احتياج. Before consonant-initial suffixes and in the jussive or imperative, the long vowel shortens: احتجت، لم يحتج، احتج. The hollow-verb overview explains the wider shortening pattern.
Lookup card and principal parts
| Item | Verified form | Use |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | ح-و-ج، Form VIII | hollow derived verb |
| perfect, long stem | اِحْتَاجَ | he needed |
| perfect before consonant suffix | اِحْتَجْتُ | I needed |
| imperfect indicative | يَحْتَاجُ | he needs / it requires |
| jussive and imperative | لَمْ يَحْتَجْ / اِحْتَجْ | did not need / need! |
| verbal noun | اِحْتِيَاجٌ | need, requirement |
| active participle | مُحْتَاجٌ | needing; in need |
| passive | اُحْتِيجَ إِلَيْهِ / يُحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ | it was/is needed |
| passive participle | مُحْتَاجٌ إِلَيْهِ | needed; formally identical to the active participle |
The principal-parts chain is اِحْتَاجَ — يَحْتَاجُ — اِحْتَجْ — اِحْتِيَاجًا. Do not infer the root from the surface ا: the word belongs to ح-و-ج, not ح-ي-ج. The active and passive participles have converged on the same form محتاج; syntax and meaning distinguish “needing” from “needed.” In ordinary use, طالب محتاج إلى الدعم is “a student in need of support.”
احتاج المريض إلى الراحة بعد العملية.
iḥtāja l-marīḍu ʾilā r-rāḥati baʿda l-ʿamaliyya.
The patient needed rest after the operation. (Formal neutral.)
احتجت إلى يومين لإكمال المراجعة.
iḥtajtu ʾilā yawmayni li-ʾikmāli l-murājaʿa.
I needed two days to complete the review. (Formal neutral.)
The stem alternation in useful forms
The long stem appears in احتاج، احتاجت، احتاجوا and throughout most of the indicative imperfect: أحتاج، تحتاج، يحتاج، نحتاج. The short stem occurs when a suffix begins with a consonant: احتجت، احتجنا، احتجتن. It also occurs when a jussive particle removes the final mood vowel: لم يحتج.
| Environment | Form | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| perfect + no consonant suffix | اِحْتَاجَ / اِحْتَاجُوا | he / they needed |
| perfect + consonant suffix | اِحْتَجْتُ / اِحْتَجْنَا | I / we needed |
| imperfect indicative | يَحْتَاجُ / تَحْتَاجِينَ | he needs / you (f.) need |
| jussive | لَمْ يَحْتَجْ / لَمْ يَحْتَاجُوا | he / they did not need |
| imperative | اِحْتَجْ / اِحْتَاجُوا | need! (m.sg. / pl.; pragmatically uncommon) |
لم نحتج إلى مترجم خلال الاجتماع.
lam naḥtaj ʾilā mutarjimin khilāla l-ijtimāʿ.

سيحتاجون إلى موافقة خطية قبل البدء.
sa-yaḥtājūna ʾilā muwāfaqatin khaṭṭiyyatin qabla l-badʾ.
They will need written approval before starting. (Formal administrative.)
The singular imperative احتج is morphologically valid but rarely useful: commands normally tell someone what to do, not what to need. It is also visually ambiguous with اِحْتَجَّ “protest!” from root ح-ج-ج. In real instructions, use a concrete command such as خذ ما تحتاج إليه “take what you need.”
Ranked meanings and valency
1. Need a thing or person: احتاج إلى
This is the core frame. The prepositional object may be concrete (إلى مفتاح) or abstract (إلى صبر). An attached pronoun goes on the preposition: أحتاج إليه، تحتاج إليها، نحتاج إليهم. Attaching it directly to the verb is not the safest general MSA pattern for this sense.
تحتاج هذه الغرفة إلى نافذة أكبر.
taḥtāju hādhihi l-ghurfatu ʾilā nāfidhatin ʾakbar.
This room needs a larger window. (Formal neutral.)
هذا هو الملف الذي نحتاج إليه اليوم.
hādhā huwa l-malaffu lladhī naḥtāju ʾilayhi l-yawm.
This is the file we need today. (Formal neutral.)
2. Need to do something: إلى + أن-clause or verbal noun
For a finite action, use احتاج إلى أن + subjunctive. If the actor is already clear and a compact formal style is wanted, use إلى + verbal noun. English omits a preposition in need to review; Arabic retains إلى in both frames.
نحتاج إلى أن نعيد فحص العينة.
naḥtāju ʾilā ʾan nuʿīda faḥṣa l-ʿayyina.
We need to re-examine the sample. (Formal/scientific.)
يحتاج المبنى إلى ترميم عاجل.
yaḥtāju l-mabnā ʾilā tarmīmin ʿājil.
The building needs urgent restoration. (Formal.)
3. A task requires time, effort, or resources
With an inanimate subject, English often translates يحتاج إلى as “requires” rather than “needs.” This is still the same frame. Contemporary writers also sometimes use a direct object, especially with measures such as يحتاج وقتا. That usage is widespread and should not be declared impossible; يحتاج إلى وقت is the transparent, conservative pattern taught here.
يحتاج تنفيذ المشروع إلى تمويل إضافي.
yaḥtāju tanfīdhu l-mashrūʿi ʾilā tamwīlin ʾiḍāfiyy.
Implementing the project requires additional funding. (Formal.)
قد يحتاج إصلاح العطل عدة ساعات.
qad yaḥtāju ʾiṣlāḥu l-ʿuṭli ʿiddata sāʿāt.
Repairing the fault may take several hours. (Formal; established direct measure object.)
احتياج, محتاج, and the passive
احتياج means “need” or “requirement,” often with إلى: الاحتياج إلى الطاقة. The plural احتياجات is extremely common for concrete needs or requirements: احتياجات العملاء، الاحتياجات الأساسية. محتاج is standard MSA, but in some regions it is also prominent in colloquial speech; its presence alone does not make a sentence dialectal.
The passive يحتاج إليه is spelled exactly like the active imperfect but vocalized يُحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ “it is needed.” Because unvocalized Arabic cannot display that contrast, writers normally choose a context that makes the reading unmistakable or rephrase with ضروري.
تقيم المؤسسة احتياجات الأسر قبل توزيع المساعدات.
tuqayyimu l-muʾassasatu iḥtiyājāti l-ʾusari qabla tawzīʿi l-musāʿadāt.
The organization assesses families' needs before distributing aid. (Formal.)
هذا دليل يحتاج إليه كل موظف جديد.
hādhā dalīlun yaḥtāju ʾilayhi kullu muwaẓẓafin jadīd.
This is a guide that every new employee needs. (Active يحتاج; formal neutral.)

Common Mistakes
Omitting إلى before the needed thing
❌ نحتاج على مساعدة خبير.
Incorrect—احتاج governs إلى, not على, before the needed thing.
✅ نحتاج إلى مساعدة خبير.
naḥtāju ʾilā musāʿadati khabīr.
We need an expert's help.
Keeping the long vowel in the jussive
❌ لم يحتاج إلى وقت طويل.
Incorrect—the jussive singular shortens the hollow stem to يحتج.
✅ لم يحتج إلى وقت طويل.
lam yaḥtaj ʾilā waqtin ṭawīl.
He did not need much time.
Attaching the pronoun to the wrong word
❌ هذا الملف نحتاجه إليه.
Incorrect—the needed item is represented once, as the suffix on إلى.
✅ هذا الملف نحتاج إليه.
hādhā l-malaffu naḥtāju ʾilayhi.
We need this file.
Reading every unvocalized احتج as “protested”
❌ لم يحتج إلى دليل.
lam yaḥtajja ʾilā dalīl
Incorrect reading here—the preposition and context select يَحْتَجْ ‘need,’ not يَحْتَجَّ ‘protest.’
✅ لم يحتج إلى دليل.
lam yaḥtaj ʾilā dalīl.
He did not need evidence.
