فَهِمَ means “understand, grasp, comprehend.” It is a sound Form-I verb from root ف-ه-م, and its core syntax is transitive: what you understand is normally a direct object—فهم السؤال “understood the question”—or a proposition introduced by أَنَّ—فهم أن الموعد تغير “understood that the appointment had changed.”
English understand covers hearing words clearly, grasping an idea, interpreting an intention, and drawing an inference. Arabic فهم can cover all four, but the complement frame shows what kind of understanding is meant. The source of an inference follows مِنْ, while the content inferred still follows أنَّ: فهمت من كلامه أن... “I understood from what he said that....”
Compare the knowledge verbs on the علم lookup page; فهم adds the idea of grasping meaning or drawing an interpretation.
Lookup card and principal parts
| Item | Verified form | Use |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | ف-ه-م، Form I | sound, transitive verb |
| perfect | فَهِمَ | he understood |
| imperfect indicative | يَفْهَمُ | he understands |
| imperative, 2 m.sg. | اِفْهَمْ | understand; get this point |
| maṣdar | فَهْم | understanding, comprehension |
| active participle | فَاهِم | understanding, one who understands |
| passive participle | مَفْهُوم | understood; as a noun, concept |
| passive | فُهِمَ — يُفْهَمُ | was understood — is understood |
The four principal parts are فَهِمَ — يَفْهَمُ — اِفْهَمْ — فَهْم. The perfect has i after the second radical, but the imperfect has a: يَفْهَمُ. This alternation is part of the lexical entry, not a spelling choice.
فهمت السؤال، لكنني لم أعرف كيف أجيب عنه.
fahimtu s-suʾāla, lākinnanī lam ʾaʿrif kayfa ʾujību ʿanh.
I understood the question, but I did not know how to answer it. (Neutral MSA.)

yafhamu ṭ-ṭiflu t-taʿlīmāti l-qaṣīrata ʾidhā qīlat bibuṭʾ.
The child understands short instructions if they are said slowly. (Neutral MSA.)
A compact paradigm and the moods
The radicals remain unchanged throughout the ordinary paradigm. Before suffixes, the perfect stem is فَهِمْـ; the imperfect uses فْهَم after the person prefix.
| Person | Perfect | Indicative imperfect |
|---|---|---|
| أنا | فَهِمْتُ | أَفْهَمُ |
| أنتَ | فَهِمْتَ | تَفْهَمُ |
| أنتِ | فَهِمْتِ | تَفْهَمِينَ |
| هو | فَهِمَ | يَفْهَمُ |
| هي | فَهِمَتْ | تَفْهَمُ |
| هم | فَهِمُوا | يَفْهَمُونَ |
The singular moods are يَفْهَمُ indicative, لَنْ يَفْهَمَ subjunctive, and لَمْ يَفْهَمْ jussive. The five-verb forms lose nūn in the subjunctive and jussive: تفهمين but لن تفهمي، لم تفهمي.
لن يفهم القارئ الحجة من دون الأمثلة الواردة في الهامش.
lan yafhama l-qāriʾu l-ḥujjata min dūni l-ʾamthilati l-wāridati fī l-hāmish.
The reader will not understand the argument without the examples in the margin. (Academic.)
افهمي شروط العقد قبل الموافقة عليه.
ifhamī shurūṭa l-ʿaqdi qabla l-muwāfaqati ʿalayh.
Understand the contract's terms before agreeing to it. (Formal advice to one woman.)
The imperative forms are اِفْهَمْ، اِفْهَمِي، اِفْهَمَا، اِفْهَمُوا، اِفْهَمْنَ. A bare command “understand!” can sound impatient. Formal instructions more often use it with a specific content phrase, while polite explanation uses حاول أن تفهم “try to understand” or يرجى فهم... “please understand....”
Ranked meanings and valency
1. Grasp words, content, or a system: direct object
Speech, writing, questions, explanations, languages, ideas, and systems can all be direct objects. Do not add بـ merely because English can say “have an understanding of.” The verb is already transitive.
لم أفهم العبارة الأخيرة بسبب الضوضاء في القاعة.
lam ʾafhami l-ʿibārata l-ʾakhīrata bisababi ḍ-ḍawḍāʾi fī l-qāʿa.
I did not understand the last phrase because of the noise in the hall. (Neutral MSA.)
تفهم نجلاء العربية المكتوبة أكثر مما تفهم المحادثات السريعة.
tafhamu najlāʾu l-ʿarabiyyata l-maktūbata ʾakthara mimmā tafhamu l-muḥādathāti s-sarīʿa.
Najla understands written Arabic better than she understands rapid conversations. (Neutral MSA.)
An attached object pronoun is common when the understood item or person is already known: فهمته، فهمتها، فهمناهم. Unvocalized فهمته can represent فَهِمْتُهُ “I understood him/it” or فَهِمَتْهُ “she understood him/it”; sentence context supplies the subject.
شرح الخبير الفكرة مرة ثانية، ففهمها أعضاء الفريق.
sharaḥa l-khabīru l-fikrata marratan thāniyatan, fa-fahimahā ʾaʿḍāʾu l-farīq.
The expert explained the idea a second time, and the team members understood it. (Formal neutral.)
2. Understand a person or intention
With a person as direct object, فهم means grasping what that person means, thinks, or feels—not merely being acquainted with them. That contrasts with عرف شخصا, which means knowing or recognizing the person.
أفهم قلقك، لكننا لا نستطيع إعلان النتائج قبل مراجعتها.
ʾafhamu qalaqaka, lākinnanā lā nastaṭīʿu ʾiʿlāna n-natāʾiji qabla murājaʿatihā.
I understand your concern, but we cannot announce the results before reviewing them. (Formal neutral.)
لم يفهم زملاؤه قصده من التعليق، فاعتذر ووضحه.
lam yafham zumalāʾuhu qaṣdahu mina t-taʿlīqi, fa-ʿtadhara wa-waḍḍaḥah.
His colleagues did not understand what he meant by the comment, so he apologized and clarified it. (Neutral MSA.)
3. Understand or realize that: أن clauses
Use أَنَّ before a full declarative proposition. This frame can describe intellectual comprehension or a realization inferred from circumstances.
فهمت أن الصمت لا يعني بالضرورة الموافقة.
fahimtu ʾanna ṣ-ṣamta lā yaʿnī biḍ-ḍarūrati l-muwāfaqa.
I understood that silence does not necessarily mean agreement. (Formal neutral.)
يفهم من التقرير أن تكلفة الصيانة ستزداد العام المقبل.
yufhamu mina t-taqrīri ʾanna taklifata ṣ-ṣiyānati satazdādu l-ʿāma l-muqbil.
It can be understood from the report that maintenance costs will increase next year. (Formal impersonal passive.)
4. Infer from a source: من... أن
If the sentence names the evidence, place it after مِنْ, then state the inferred content with أنَّ. This transparent frame is particularly useful in reporting and analysis.
فهمنا من رد المورد أن الشحنة لن تصل هذا الأسبوع.
fahimnā min raddi l-muwarridi ʾanna sh-shiḥnata lan taṣila hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.
We inferred from the supplier's reply that the shipment would not arrive this week. (Business MSA.)
فهمت الصحفية من الوثائق كيف نقلت الأموال بين الحسابات.
fahimati ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyatu mina l-wathāʾiqi kayfa nuqilati l-ʾamwālu bayna l-ḥisābāt.
From the documents, the journalist understood how the funds had been moved between the accounts. (Journalistic.)
فهم أن or فهم بأن?
Plain فهم أنَّ... is the broad, economical choice in edited MSA because فهم can take its content directly. فهم بأنَّ... is nevertheless attested in contemporary administrative and journalistic writing, where بـ packages the clause as information apprehended. It should not be treated as meaningless or automatically ungrammatical.
For learners, three choices keep the relationship explicit:
| What you mean | Preferred transparent frame |
|---|---|
| understand that P | فَهِمَ أَنَّ P |
| infer from X that P | فَهِمَ مِنْ X أَنَّ P |
| P is inferable from X | يُفْهَمُ مِنْ X أَنَّ P |
فهمت من الرسالة أن الطلب يحتاج إلى توقيع إضافي.
fahimtu mina r-risālati ʾanna ṭ-ṭalaba yaḥtāju ʾilā tawqīʿin ʾiḍāfiyy.
I understood from the message that the application needs an additional signature. (Formal neutral.)
Interpretation frames, passive, and participles
To say “understand X as Y,” use فهم X على أنَّه Y or the passive فُهِمَ X على أنَّه Y. This is common when wording admits more than one interpretation.
فهم بعض القراء الاقتراح على أنه إلغاء كامل للمشروع.
fahima baʿḍu l-qurrāʾi l-iqtirāḥa ʿalā ʾannahu ʾilghāʾun kāmilun lil-mashrūʿ.
Some readers understood the proposal as a complete cancellation of the project. (Formal.)
فهم التصريح خطأ على أنه وعد رسمي.
fuhima t-taṣrīḥu khaṭaʾan ʿalā ʾannahu waʿdun rasmiyy.
The statement was mistakenly understood as an official promise. (Formal passive.)
مَفْهُوم functions both as “understood/comprehensible” and as the noun “concept.” فَاهِم is grammatical in MSA, but predicative أنا فاهم often sounds conversational and overlaps strongly with regional speech; neutral formal prose commonly chooses أنا أفهم. That is a register preference, not a claim that فاهم is ungrammatical.
Collocations
| Collocation | Meaning and register |

| سُوءُ فَهْمٍ | misunderstanding (neutral) |
| فَهْمٌ عَمِيقٌ / مُشْتَرَكٌ | deep/shared understanding (formal) |

I understood the lesson after the second example.
Joining a full declarative clause without أن
❌ فهم المدير الخطة تحتاج إلى تعديل.

The director understood that the plan needed revision.
Confusing knowing a person with understanding them

✅ عرفت الطبيب منذ عشر سنوات.
ʿaraftu ṭ-ṭabība mundhu ʿashri sanawāt.
I have known the doctor for ten years.
Key Takeaways
- Memorize فَهِمَ — يَفْهَمُ — اِفْهَمْ — فَهْم; the verb is sound but changes its stem vowel.
- Use a direct object for words, people, languages, ideas, and systems; use أنَّ for a complete proposition.
- State evidence with مِنْ: فهم من X أن...; the impersonal passive is يُفهم من X أن....
- فهم بأن is attested in modern formal prose, but فهم أن is the clearer default when no separate source phrase is intended.
