قرأ — read and illustrate final hamza spelling

قَرَأَ is the basic Form-I verb “read,” from root ق-ر-ء. It is hamzated in its third radical: the final consonant is always hamza, even though its written seat changes in قَرَأَ، قَارِئ، قُرِئَ، مَقْرُوء. Those spellings represent one root consonant in different vowel environments, not four different stem endings.

The قَرَأَ morphology lesson follows every agreement ending and hamza-seat change. This page is the lexical lookup: what can be read directly, when عن means “about,” how recipients and audiences are expressed, which metaphorical readings are current, and how the passive and participles function in real prose.

The principal-parts unit is قَرَأَ — يَقْرَأُ — اِقْرَأْ — قِرَاءَة. The verb is not weak: hamza remains a consonant in every form. Alif, wāw, or the yāʾ-shaped seat beneath it may change according to hamza spelling rules, but the root does not acquire a weak radical.

قرأت منى الرسالة مرتين قبل أن ترد عليها.

qaraʾat munā r-risālata marratayni qabla ʾan tarudda ʿalayhā.

Muna read the message twice before replying to it. (Neutral MSA.)

يقرأ المدير ملخص السوق قبل بدء الاجتماع.

yaqraʾu l-mudīru mulakhkhaṣa s-sūqi qabla badʾi l-ijtimāʿ.

The director reads the market summary before the meeting begins. (Business MSA.)

💡
Learn the object contrast with the verb: قرأ الكتاب means “read the book,” while قرأ عن الكتاب means “read about the book.” The preposition changes the role of the noun.

The forms that matter most in use

Most person forms are regular apart from hamza seating. The following table gathers the forms learners actually need to recognize rather than repeating the entire spelling lesson.

The singular moods differ in their final vowel: يَقْرَأُ indicative, لَنْ يَقْرَأَ subjunctive, لَمْ يَقْرَأْ jussive. In ordinary unvocalized spelling all three are يقرأ, so the governor and syntax identify the mood.

لن تقرأ اللجنة الشكوى قبل وصول المرفقات.

lan taqraʾa l-lajnatu sh-shakwā qabla wuṣūli l-murfaqāt.

The committee will not read the complaint before the attachments arrive. (Formal; subjunctive after lan.)

لم يقرأ أي منا النسخة المنقحة بعد.

lam yaqraʾ ʾayyun minnā n-nuskhata l-munaqqaḥata baʿd.

None of us has read the revised version yet. (Formal neutral; jussive after lam.)

The imperative begins with hamzat al-waṣl but ends in the pronounced root hamza. In isolation it is اِقْرَأْ iqraʾ; after وَ, the initial vowel elides: وَاقْرَأْ waqraʾ. The final hamza never elides.

اقرأ العقد كاملا، ولا تكتف بالصفحة الأولى.

iqraʾi l-ʿaqda kāmilan, wa-lā taktafi biṣ-ṣafḥati l-ʾūlā.

Read the entire contract; do not stop at the first page. (Formal advice to one man.)

Ranked meanings and valency

1. Read a text or written object: direct object

The default object is the text, document, sign, message, book, or other written material being read. No preposition stands between قرأ and that object.

قرأ المسافر لوحة المغادرة ثم اتجه إلى البوابة الجديدة.

qaraʾa l-musāfiru lawḥata l-mughādarati thumma ttajaha ʾilā l-bawwābati l-jadīda.

The traveler read the departure board and then headed to the new gate. (Neutral MSA.)

تقرأ المحامية كل بند قبل أن تقترح أي تعديل.

taqraʾu l-muḥāmiyatu kulla bandin qabla ʾan taqtariḥa ʾayya taʿdīl.

The lawyer reads every clause before proposing any amendment. (Formal neutral.)

The object can be an attached pronoun: قرأه، قرأتها، قرأناها. With people, قرأ فلانا is not the ordinary way to say “read to someone”; it is more likely metaphorical—“read/interpreted the person.” Use a recipient or audience construction instead.

2. Read about a topic: عن

Use قَرَأَ عَنْ + topic/person/event when the noun is not itself the text but its subject matter. قرأ في موضوع can mean reading within, consulting, or studying a field and is common in formal prose; قرأ عن موضوع transparently means reading information about it.

قرأت عن تاريخ الميناء قبل زيارته.

qaraʾtu ʿan tārīkhi l-mīnāʾi qabla ziyāratih.

I read about the port's history before visiting it. (Neutral MSA.)

يقرأ الباحث في اقتصاد المدن الساحلية منذ سنوات.

yaqraʾu l-bāḥithu fī qtiṣādi l-muduni s-sāḥiliyyati mundhu sanawāt.

The researcher has been reading in the field of coastal-city economics for years. (Academic.)

3. Read to a recipient or before an audience

With لـ, the beneficiary hears something read: قرأ للطفل قصة “read the child a story.” With على, formal or recitative contexts can present material before a person or group: قرأ البيان على الحاضرين “read the statement to those present.” Simply reading aloud is قرأ بصوت عال or قرأ جهرا.

قرأ الأب لابنته فصلا قصيرا قبل النوم.

qaraʾa l-ʾabu libnatihi faṣlan qaṣīran qabla n-nawm.

The father read his daughter a short chapter before bed. (Neutral MSA.)

قرأ أمين الجلسة القرار على الأعضاء بصوت واضح.

qaraʾa ʾamīnu l-jalsati l-qarāra ʿalā l-ʾaʿḍāʾi biṣawtin wāḍiḥ.

The session secretary read the decision aloud to the members. (Formal.)

The construction قرأ عليه also belongs to religious recitation and other specialized settings. Label the domain rather than assuming it is the default frame for every ordinary “read to.”

4. Interpret data, events, or intentions

In formal, journalistic, and academic language, قرأ can mean “interpret” or “read” evidence: قرأ الأرقام، قرأ المشهد، قرأ بين السطور. The object remains direct. This is not merely an English loan translation; these are established Arabic uses, but they belong to analytical prose rather than the most basic A2 meaning.

قرأ المحلل الأرقام بوصفها مؤشرا على تباطؤ الطلب.

qaraʾa l-muḥallilu l-ʾarqāma biwaṣfihā muʾashshiran ʿalā tabāṭuʾi ṭ-ṭalab.

The analyst read the figures as an indication that demand was slowing. (Analytical.)

لا تقرأ صمت الفريق على أنه رفض نهائي.

lā taqraʾ ṣamta l-farīqi ʿalā ʾannahu rafḍun nihāʾiyy.

Do not interpret the team's silence as a final refusal. (Formal advice to one man.)

Hamza across the lexical family

The changing seat is easiest to understand by comparing lexical forms:

FormSpellingReason
perfectقَرَأَfinal hamza after a is seated on alif
active participleقَارِئhamza has i and sits on ئ
maṣdarقِرَاءَةhamza after long ā is written on the line
passive perfectقُرِئَthe i environment favors ئ
passive participleمَقْرُوءhamza follows long ū and is written on the line
reader, pluralقُرَّاءlexical broken plural ending in bare hamza

قِرَاءَة can mean the activity of reading or an interpretive “reading”: قراءة نقدية للنص. قَارِئ is “reader”; its common human plural is قُرَّاء. مَقْرُوء can mean “read” and, of a publication or writer, “widely read.”

قدمت الباحثة قراءة نقدية للخطاب الإعلامي.

qaddamati l-bāḥithatu qirāʾatan naqdiyyatan lil-khiṭābi l-ʾiʿlāmiyy.

The researcher presented a critical reading of media discourse. (Academic.)

💡
The spellings قارئ، قراءة، مقروء are not interchangeable applications of one visual rule. Each has a different vowel environment and morphological pattern; memorize them as the core lexical family.

Passive patterns

The passive perfect is قُرِئَ and the passive imperfect يُقْرَأُ. The text being read becomes the grammatical subject. If an agent matters, formal Arabic often recasts the clause actively rather than adding a literal equivalent of English by.

قرئ البيان في بداية المؤتمر ثم وزع على الصحفيين.

quriʾa l-bayānu fī bidāyati l-muʾtamari thumma wuzziʿa ʿalā ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyīn.

The statement was read at the beginning of the conference and then distributed to journalists. (Formal passive.)

يقرأ الرمز بطريقتين بحسب السياق.

yuqraʾu r-ramzu biṭarīqatayni biḥasabi s-siyāq.

The symbol is read in two ways depending on context. (Academic.)

Common Mistakes

Adding عن before the text itself

❌ قرأت عن التقرير الذي أرسلته اللجنة.

Incorrect if the meaning is ‘I read the report’—عن changes the report into the topic read about.

✅ قرأت التقرير الذي أرسلته اللجنة.

qaraʾtu t-taqrīra lladhī ʾarsalathu l-lajna.

I read the report that the committee sent.

Omitting عن before a topic

❌ قرأت التغير المناخي في المجلة.

Incorrect for ‘I read about climate change’—climate change is the topic, not a text being read.

✅ قرأت عن التغير المناخي في المجلة.

qaraʾtu ʿani t-taghayyuri l-munākhiyyi fī l-majalla.

I read about climate change in the magazine.

Misspelling the active participle like the maṣdar

❌ هذا القارء يعرف تاريخ المنطقة جيدا.

Incorrect spelling—the active participle is قارئ, with hamza on a yāʾ-shaped seat.

✅ هذا القارئ يعرف تاريخ المنطقة جيدا.

hādhā l-qāriʾu yaʿrifu tārīkha l-minṭaqati jayyidan.

This reader knows the region's history well.

Replacing the maṣdar's bare hamza with ئ

❌ تحتاج هذه الوثيقة إلى قرائة دقيقة.

Incorrect—the maṣdar is قراءة, with bare hamza after long ā and tāʾ marbūṭa.

✅ تحتاج هذه الوثيقة إلى قراءة دقيقة.

taḥtāju hādhihi l-wathīqatu ʾilā qirāʾatin daqīqa.

This document requires careful reading.

Key Takeaways

  • The lexical family is قَرَأَ — يَقْرَأُ — اِقْرَأْ — قِرَاءَة — قَارِئ — مَقْرُوء; the radical hamza remains even when its seat changes.
  • Read a text as a direct object, but read عن a topic; use لـ for a beneficiary and على for a formal audience in the appropriate register.
  • Analytical prose extends قرأ to data, situations, and interpretations without changing its direct-object syntax.
  • Passive قُرِئَ / يُقْرَأُ is common when the text, wording, or symbol matters more than the reader.
