This original popular-science text was written for the guide. It explains why a clear daytime sky appears blue in contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal/popular-science). The physical account is intentionally concise but accurate: visible sunlight contains a range of wavelengths, gas molecules scatter shorter wavelengths more strongly, human visual sensitivity affects the perceived color, and a longer atmospheric path changes sunset light.
Good science writing does more than replace familiar words with technical terms. It defines a process, distinguishes cause from result, uses passive voice when the affected phenomenon matters more than an obvious agent, and attaches relational nisba adjectives precisely. English speakers should notice that Arabic can use nominal definitions without is, while causal connectors differ in whether they introduce a noun phrase, a clause, or a result. See Cause and Result, Passive Voice by Register, and Nisba Adjectives.
The complete explanation

Why Does the Sky Look Blue?
Visible sunlight is a mixture of colors with different wavelengths. When this light enters the atmosphere, it encounters tiny gas molecules and is scattered in multiple directions. Short waves, including blue and violet light, are scattered more than long waves.
Scattered rays reach the eye from across the sky, so we see it as blue on a clear day. Although violet light has a shorter wavelength and is strongly scattered, the human eye is less sensitive to it, and the amount of violet light reaching us is also smaller; blue therefore dominates what we perceive.
At sunset, sunlight travels along a longer path through the atmosphere. As a result, much of the blue light is scattered away from the line of sight, while a greater proportion of red and orange light reaches the eye directly. This is why the sun and the region near it appear redder at the horizon.
A definition starts with classification
ضوء الشمس المرئي مزيج من ألوان ذات أطوال موجية مختلفة.
ḍawʾu sh-shamsi l-marʾiyyu mazījun min ʾalwānin dhāti ʾaṭwālin mawjiyyatin mukhtalifa(h).
Visible sunlight is a mixture of colors with different wavelengths.
This nominal sentence classifies ضوء الشمس المرئي as مزيج without a present copula. The iḍāfa ضوء الشمس is definite, so المرئي is definite too. The phrase ذات أطوال موجية means “possessing wavelengths”; feminine ذات agrees with non-human plural ألوان under the standard feminine-singular pattern.
موجية is a technical nisba adjective derived from موجة “wave.” It relates the lengths to waves; it does not merely add a vague scientific tone. Likewise مرئي identifies the portion perceptible to human sight. Precise science prose uses such adjectives only when the relation is clear.
التشتت هو تغير اتجاه الضوء عندما يتفاعل مع جزيئات المادة.
at-tashattutu huwa taghayyuru ttijāhi ḍ-ḍawʾi ʿindamā yatafāʿalu maʿa juzayʾāti l-mādda(h).
Scattering is a change in the direction of light when it interacts with particles of matter.
This explicit pedagogical definition uses separation pronoun هو between two definite or concept-like expressions. It prevents readers from misreading تغير as an adjective and gives the term a reusable category. The source text demonstrates the process instead of pausing for this formal definition, a common popular-science choice.
Process clauses connect event, mechanism, and result
عندما يدخل الضوء الغلاف الجوي، يصطدم بجزيئات الغاز الدقيقة فيتشتت في اتجاهات متعددة.
ʿindamā yadkhulu ḍ-ḍawʾu l-ghilāfa l-jawwiyya, yaṣṭadimu bi-juzayʾāti l-ghāzi d-daqīqati fa-yatashattatu fī ttijāhātin mutaʿaddida(h).
When light enters the atmosphere, it encounters tiny gas molecules and consequently scatters in multiple directions.
عندما supplies the recurring condition. The prefix فـ on فيتشتت marks a closely consequent step: encounter leads directly to scattering in this simplified account. Calling the particles دقيقة describes their small size; it does not mean that they are “accurate,” despite the two English senses of fine/precise.
The adjective الجوي is a nisba derived from جو and modifies الغلاف: literally “the atmospheric envelope.” It is masculine singular because its noun is masculine singular. Technical vocabulary remains subject to ordinary agreement.
تتشتت الموجات القصيرة أكثر من الموجات الطويلة.
tatashattatu l-mawjātu l-qaṣīratu ʾakthara mina l-mawjāti ṭ-ṭawīla(h).
Short waves are scattered more than long waves.
Form V تتشتت presents the intransitive process: the waves undergo scattering. Both non-human plurals take feminine-singular adjectives القصيرة، الطويلة. Comparative أكثر من measures relative degree, not an absolute claim that long wavelengths never scatter.
ومع أن الضوء البنفسجي أقصر موجة ويتشتت بقوة، فإن العين البشرية أقل حساسية له.
wa-maʿa ʾanna ḍ-ḍawʾa l-banafsajiyya ʾaqṣaru mawjatan wa-yatashattatu bi-quwwatin, fa-ʾinna l-ʿayna l-bashariyyata ʾaqallu ḥasāsiyyatan lah.
Although violet light has a shorter wavelength and is strongly scattered, the human eye is less sensitive to it.
The concessive frame مع أن... فإن... acknowledges a fact that might seem to predict a violet sky and then supplies a countervailing perceptual factor. أقصر موجة and أقل حساسية use elatives with accusative specifications. The nisba البشرية relates the eye to humans, distinguishing biological perception from the physical scattering alone.
Cause and result require the right connector
تصل إلى العين أشعة متناثرة من أنحاء السماء، ولذلك نراها زرقاء في النهار الصافي.
taṣilu ʾilā l-ʿayni ʾashiʿʿatun mutanāthiratun min ʾanḥāʾi s-samāʾi, wa-li-dhālika narāhā zarqāʾa fī n-nahāri ṣ-ṣāfī.
Scattered rays reach the eye from across the sky, so we see it as blue on a clear day.
The first clause supplies evidence; ولذلك introduces the perceptual result. Object ـها in نراها refers to السماء, not to plural rays, and زرقاء is a second object/predicative complement: “we perceive it [as] blue.” English therefore can occupy several positions; Arabic لذلك normally points backward to an established reason.
عند الغروب يمر ضوء الشمس في مسار أطول داخل الغلاف الجوي؛ ونتيجة لذلك، يشتت كثير من الضوء الأزرق بعيدا عن خط النظر.
ʿinda l-ghurūbi yamurru ḍawʾu sh-shamsi fī masārin ʾaṭwala dākhila l-ghilāfi l-jawwiyy; wa-natījatan li-dhālika, yushattatu kathīrun mina ḍ-ḍawʾi l-ʾazraqi baʿīdan ʿan khaṭṭi n-naẓar.
At sunset sunlight travels along a longer path through the atmosphere; as a result, much blue light is scattered away from the line of sight.
نتيجة لذلك explicitly labels the second clause as a result. Passive يشتت keeps كثير من الضوء الأزرق as the affected subject, because the physical process matters more than repeatedly naming atmospheric molecules. This is purposeful passive voice, not concealment of responsibility.
لأن مسار الضوء أطول عند الغروب، تصل نسبة أكبر من الضوء الأحمر والبرتقالي إلى العين.
li-ʾanna masāra ḍ-ḍawʾi ʾaṭwalu ʿinda l-ghurūbi, taṣilu nisbatun ʾakbaru mina ḍ-ḍawʾi l-ʾaḥmari wa-l-burtuqāliyyi ʾilā l-ʿayn.
Because the light's path is longer at sunset, a greater proportion of red and orange light reaches the eye.
لأنّ introduces a finite causal clause and assigns accusative to مسار. By contrast, بسبب normally governs a noun phrase: بسبب طول المسار “because of the length of the path.” Mixing these frames produces a common transfer error.
Passive voice calibrates focus
يشتت الضوء الأزرق بعيدا عن خط النظر، بينما يصل الضوء الأحمر إلى العين مباشرة.
yushattatu ḍ-ḍawʾu l-ʾazraqu baʿīdan ʿan khaṭṭi n-naẓari, baynamā yaṣilu ḍ-ḍawʾu l-ʾaḥmaru ʾilā l-ʿayni mubāshara(h).
Blue light is scattered away from the line of sight, while red light reaches the eye directly.
The passive and active clauses create a clean contrast between what is removed from and what remains along the observer's path. Arabic passive voice changes active يُشَتِّتُ yushattitu to passive يُشَتَّتُ yushattatu in speech; the unvocalized spelling يشتت is identical, so context and the spokenForm are crucial. The affected subject الضوء الأزرق remains nominative.
يسمى هذا النوع من الشرح تفسيرا سببيا، لأنه يربط الظاهرة بآليتها.
yusammā hādhā n-nawʿu mina sh-sharḥi tafsīran sababiyyan, li-ʾannahu yarbiṭu ẓ-ẓāhirata bi-ʾāliyyatihā.
This kind of explanation is called a causal explanation because it connects the phenomenon with its mechanism.
Passive يسمى defines a label without naming a namer. Nisba adjective سببي derives from سبب and classifies the explanation by relation to causation. The final suffix ـها refers to feminine الظاهرة and packages “its mechanism” as an iḍāfa.
Comprehension and production
- What is classified in the opening nominal sentence, and which phrase gives its defining composition?
- Trace the causal chain from atmospheric entry to the daytime perception of blue.
- Why does the violet-light sentence require concession rather than a simple result connector?
- Find four nisba adjectives and state the precise relation each expresses.
- Where does passive voice improve focus, and where does the text prefer an active or intransitive process?
For production, explain in 140 words why a metal spoon feels colder than a wooden spoon at the same room temperature. Define one technical term, use عندما...فـ, لأنّ, لذلك, and مع أن...فإن, include two purposeful passives, and form two technical nisba adjectives. Keep observed fact, mechanism, and result distinct.
Common Mistakes
Using a result connector to introduce a cause
❌ تبدو السماء زرقاء، لذلك تشتت الموجات القصيرة.
The causal direction is reversed—scattering helps explain the appearance; the blue appearance does not cause the scattering.
✅ تتشتت الموجات القصيرة بقوة، ولذلك تبدو السماء زرقاء.
tatashattatu l-mawjātu l-qaṣīratu bi-quwwatin, wa-li-dhālika tabdū s-samāʾu zarqāʾ.
Short waves are strongly scattered, so the sky appears blue.
Combining بسبب with a finite أنّ clause
❌ بسبب أن المسار أطول، يتغير لون الغروب.
Avoid this hybrid in careful MSA; use لأنّ with a clause or بسبب with a noun phrase.
✅ لأن مسار الضوء أطول، يتغير الضوء الذي يصل إلى العين.
li-ʾanna masāra ḍ-ḍawʾi ʾaṭwalu, yataghayyaru ḍ-ḍawʾu lladhī yaṣilu ʾilā l-ʿayn.
Because the light's path is longer, the light that reaches the eye changes.
Giving a non-human plural a plural adjective
❌ الموجات القصيرات تتشتت أكثر.
Incorrect in neutral MSA—non-human plural الموجات takes feminine-singular القصيرة.
✅ الموجات القصيرة تتشتت أكثر من الموجات الطويلة.
al-mawjātu l-qaṣīratu tatashattatu ʾakthara mina l-mawjāti ṭ-ṭawīla(h).
Short waves are scattered more than long waves.
Using a technical adjective without a clear head noun
❌ يحدث الجوي بسبب الضوء.
Incorrect and semantically empty—الجوي is an adjective and must modify a noun that identifies the atmospheric relation.
✅ يحدث التشتت داخل الغلاف الجوي بسبب تفاعل الضوء مع الجزيئات.
yaḥduthu t-tashattutu dākhila l-ghilāfi l-jawwiyyi bi-sababi tafāʿuli ḍ-ḍawʾi maʿa l-juzayʾāt.
Scattering occurs within the atmosphere because of the interaction of light with particles.
Key Takeaways
- A concise definition classifies a term and gives its distinguishing feature rather than merely repeating the term.
- لأنّ and بسبب introduce causes in different grammatical shapes; لذلك and نتيجة لذلك introduce results.
- Passive voice is useful when the affected light or observed process is the topic and the agent is predictable or secondary.
- Technical nisba adjectives remain ordinary adjectives: they need a clear head noun and full agreement.
- Popular science must separate physical mechanism, human perception, concession, and observed result instead of compressing them into one unsupported claim.
