Academic Modern Standard Arabic is not ordinary prose made impressive by longer words. It is a (formal/academic) genre in which definitions delimit concepts, sources identify responsibility, hedges match claims to evidence, and connectors make the argument recoverable. A reader should be able to distinguish the author's result, another scholar's position, a limitation, and the conclusion drawn from both.
The central editing question is therefore not “How can I nominalize this?” but “What does this sentence ask the reader to accept, and on what basis?” Contemporary academic Arabic uses both verbal and nominal clauses, both active and passive voice, and both compact terminology and explicit explanation. The choice depends on agency, stance, density, and the place of the sentence in the argument.
Define the genre, audience, and terms
An article for specialists may assume technical vocabulary; a dissertation chapter should define its analytical categories; a public research summary should unpack both. A useful definition names the category and states how it will be recognized or measured. A circular definition merely repeats the term in another form.
نقصد بالكفاءة هنا عدد الطلبات التي يعالجها الفريق في ساعة عمل واحدة.
naqṣidu bi-l-kafāʾati hunā ʿadada ṭ-ṭalabāti llatī yuʿālijuhā l-farīqu fī sāʿati ʿamalin wāḥida(h).
By efficiency here, we mean the number of applications the team processes in one working hour. (academic operational definition)
The frame نقصد بـ... هنا marks this as the present study's definition, not an eternal dictionary meaning. It also makes the author visible without turning the sentence into personal anecdote. For an inherited definition, name its source instead.
يعرف التقرير الأمن الغذائي بأنه قدرة السكان على الحصول المنتظم على غذاء كاف وآمن.
yuʿarrifu t-taqrīru l-ʾamna l-ghidhāʾiyya bi-ʾannahu qudratu s-sukkāni ʿalā l-ḥuṣūli l-muntaẓami ʿalā ghidhāʾin kāfin wa-ʾāmin.
The report defines food security as the population's ability to obtain adequate, safe food regularly. (definition attributed to a source)
English permits long strings such as “urban household food access survey.” Arabic normally exposes the relations with an iḍāfa, an adjective, or a prepositional phrase: مسح حصول الأسر الحضرية على الغذاء. This is not mere word order; the Arabic structure tells the reader which noun each modifier belongs to.
Calibrate a claim instead of decorating it
Academic stance should encode evidence strength. تثبت النتائج “the results prove” is strong; تشير النتائج إلى “the results indicate” is more cautious; قد يعكس “may reflect” presents an interpretation as possible. A hedge is not an apology. It prevents a claim from outrunning the design.
Here is one proposition in two contemporary registers:
قلل البرنامج وقت الانتظار عشر دقائق في المتوسط.
qallala l-barnāmaju waqta l-intiẓāri ʿashra daqāʾiqa fī l-mutawassiṭ.
The program reduced waiting time by ten minutes on average. (clear public-facing formal style)
تشير نتائج التجربة إلى انخفاض متوسط زمن الانتظار بمقدار عشر دقائق بعد تطبيق البرنامج.
tushīru natāʾiju t-tajribati ʾilā nkhifāḍi mutawassiṭi zamani l-intiẓāri bi-miqdāri ʿashri daqāʾiqa baʿda taṭbīqi l-barnāmaj.
The experimental results indicate a ten-minute decline in mean waiting time after the program was implemented. (academic result statement)
The second version names the evidential basis and avoids making the program a causal agent unless the research design supports causation. It is denser because the result itself is the topic. The first is preferable in a public summary once that causal interpretation has been justified.
قد يعكس الفرق تحسنا موسميا، ولذلك لا ننسبه كله إلى التدخل.
qad yaʿkisu l-farqu taḥassunan mawsimiyyan, wa-li-dhālika lā nansibuhu kullahu ʾilā t-tadakhkhul.
The difference may reflect a seasonal improvement, so we do not attribute all of it to the intervention. (academic hedge with consequence)
Cite a source and mark where its voice ends
Citation is an allocation of responsibility. وفقا لدراسة... identifies a basis; يرى فلان أن... attributes an interpretation; تؤكد بياناتنا... assigns the present authors a stronger commitment. The source frame must not silently extend over the author's later evaluation.
وفقا لدراسة نشرتها الجامعة عام ألفين وأربعة وعشرين، ارتفعت المشاركة بعد تغيير الجدول.
wifqan li-dirāsatin nasharathā l-jāmiʿatu ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-ʾarbaʿatin wa-ʿishrīna, irtafaʿati l-mushārakatu baʿda taghyīri l-jadwal.
According to a study published by the university in 2024, participation rose after the schedule changed. (source claim)
غير أن الدراسة لم تقارن المشاركين بمجموعة ضابطة؛ ومن ثم نعد النتيجة أولية.
ghayra ʾanna d-dirāsata lam tuqārini l-mushārikīna bi-majmūʿatin ḍābiṭa(h); wa-min thamma naʿuddu n-natījata ʾawwaliyya(h).
However, the study did not compare the participants with a control group; we therefore regard the result as preliminary. (author evaluation)
The sentence break and غير أن end the source report. نعد then makes the current authors responsible for the evaluation. Without that boundary, a reader could wrongly attribute the criticism to the cited study itself. See Attribution and Evidential Distance for finer source distinctions.
Give the argument a visible spine
A compact academic paragraph often moves through four functions: claim, evidence, limitation, and implication. Not every paragraph needs exactly four sentences, but the reader should be able to locate each function. Connectors should name real relations rather than merely raise the register.
تفترض الدراسة أن التدريب القصير يحسن دقة المراجعة. وتدعم سجلات الأداء هذا الافتراض، إذ انخفضت الأخطاء في الأقسام الثلاثة. ومع ذلك، كانت مدة المتابعة شهرين فقط. لذلك نحتاج إلى قياس الأثر بعد عام كامل.
taftariḍu d-dirāsatu ʾanna t-tadrība l-qaṣīra yuḥassinu diqqata l-murājaʿa(h). wa-tadʿamu sijillātu l-ʾadāʾi hādhā l-iftirāḍ, ʾidhi nkhafaḍati l-ʾakhṭāʾu fī l-ʾaqsāmi th-thalātha(h). wa-maʿa dhālika, kānat muddatu l-mutābaʿati shahrayni faqaṭ. li-dhālika naḥtāju ʾilā qiyāsi l-ʾathari baʿda ʿāmin kāmil.
The study hypothesizes that brief training improves review accuracy. Performance records support this hypothesis, as errors fell in all three departments. Nevertheless, follow-up lasted only two months. We therefore need to measure the effect after a full year. (short academic genre model)
This model alternates finite clauses with compact noun phrases. Agency is visible: the study hypothesizes, records support, and the authors state what is needed. Its stance moves from hypothesis to support to limitation, while its density remains manageable because each sentence performs one argumentative job.
Case, voice, and sentence length
Case belongs to the analysis even when an article is printed without short vowels. In a prepared conference reading, a speaker may realize internal endings that clarify structure and pause naturally at the end of a sense group. Spontaneous seminar discussion often suppresses more short endings without ceasing to be MSA. Do not add random -un endings as an academic badge.
تؤيد البيانات التفسير الأول، لكن حجم العينة يحد من قوة الاستنتاج.
tuʾayyidu l-bayānātu t-tafsīra l-ʾawwala, lākinna ḥajma l-ʿayyinati yaḥuddu min quwwati l-istintāj.
The data support the first interpretation, but the sample size limits the strength of the conclusion. (prepared academic speech with a natural final pause)
Passive voice is useful in a methods section when the procedure matters more than the operator: جمعت البيانات على مرحلتين “the data were collected in two stages.” Active voice is better when methodological responsibility matters: راجع باحثان مستقلان الترميز “two independent researchers reviewed the coding.” Sentence length follows the same logic: retain a long sentence only when its hierarchy remains visible on the first reading.
Editing an overloaded draft
تم القيام بإجراء عملية تحليل للبيانات بهدف التوصل إلى تحديد العوامل ذات التأثير في النتائج.
tamma l-qiyāmu bi-ʾijrāʾi ʿamaliyyati taḥlīlin li-l-bayānāti bi-hadafi t-tawaṣṣuli ʾilā taḥdīdi l-ʿawāmili dhāti t-taʾthīri fī n-natāʾij.
An analysis process was carried out on the data with the aim of arriving at an identification of the factors affecting the results. (grammatical but overnominalized academic draft)
حللنا البيانات لتحديد العوامل التي أثرت في النتائج.
ḥallalnā l-bayānāti li-taḥdīdi l-ʿawāmili llatī ʾaththarat fī n-natāʾij.
We analyzed the data to identify the factors that affected the results. (clear academic revision)
The revision restores the researcher as agent, converts the purpose into لـ + verbal noun, and gives the causal relation a finite relative clause. First-person plural is not unacademic when it accurately identifies the authors' work. If a journal prefers impersonal methods prose, the direct passive حللت البيانات is still shorter than the original chain.
Common Mistakes
Leaving a dialect sentence unlabeled in the analytical voice
النتايج بتقول إن الخطة نفعت.
in-natāyij bitqūl ʾinna l-khuṭṭa nifʿit.
The results say that the plan worked. (Egyptian Arabic; valid regional speech, not an unlabeled academic MSA sentence)
تشير النتائج إلى أن الخطة حققت هدفها الرئيس.
tushīru n-natāʾiju ʾilā ʾanna l-khuṭṭata ḥaqqaqat hadafahā r-raʾīs.
The results indicate that the plan achieved its primary objective. (academic MSA)
Choosing archaism instead of precision
ومما لا مراء فيه أن ما أسلفناه آنفا جليل الخطر.
wa-mimmā lā mirāʾa fīhi ʾanna mā ʾaslafnāhu ʾānifan jalīlu l-khaṭar.
It is beyond dispute that what we stated above is of grave importance. (valid elevated/literary wording, needlessly archaizing in a routine research report)
تؤثر النتيجة السابقة مباشرة في تفسير البيانات اللاحقة.
tuʾaththiru n-natījatu s-sābiqatu mubāsharatan fī tafsīri l-bayānāti l-lāḥiqa(h).
The preceding result directly affects the interpretation of the later data. (specific contemporary revision)
Copying an English premodifier chain
نتائج دراسة خطة رقمنة خدمات الجامعة الجديدة
natāʾiju dirāsati khuṭṭati raqmanati khadamāti l-jāmiʿati l-jadīda(h)
an opaque chain: ‘new’ can describe the plan, the services, or the university
نتائج دراسة الخطة الجديدة لرقمنة خدمات الجامعة
natāʾiju dirāsati l-khuṭṭati l-jadīdati li-raqmanati khadamāti l-jāmiʿa(h)
the results of the study of the new plan to digitize the university's services (attachments explicit)
Treating maximum inflection as compulsory in seminar discussion
نناقش اليوم نتائج الدراسة وحدودها.
nunāqishu l-yawma natāʾija d-dirāsati wa-ḥudūdahā.
Today we discuss the study's results and limitations. (valid fully inflected connected reading; suitable for close prepared reading)
سنناقش اليوم نتائج الدراسة، ثم ننتقل إلى حدودها.
sanunāqishu l-yawma natāʾija d-dirāsa(h), thumma nantaqilu ʾilā ḥudūdihā.
Today we will discuss the study's results and then move to its limitations. (natural prepared delivery with a genuine pause)
Hiding every researcher behind passive formulas
تمت مراجعة الأدبيات وتم اختيار العينة وتم تفسير النتائج.
tammat murājaʿatu l-ʾadabiyyāti wa-tamma khtiyāru l-ʿayyinati wa-tamma tafsīru n-natāʾij.
The literature was reviewed, the sample selected, and the results interpreted. (grammatical but responsibility-free methods prose)
راجع المؤلفان الأدبيات، واختار فريق مستقل العينة، ثم فسرنا النتائج بالاستناد إلى النموذج النظري.
rājaʿa l-muʾallifāni l-ʾadabiyyāt, wa-khtāra farīqun mustaqillun l-ʿayyinata, thumma fassarnā n-natāʾija bi-l-istinādi ʾilā n-namūdhaji n-naẓariyy.
The two authors reviewed the literature, an independent team selected the sample, and we then interpreted the results using the theoretical model. (roles explicit)
Key Takeaways
- Define technical terms for the actual study and distinguish your definition from a cited one.
- Match تثبت، تشير إلى، قد يعكس and other stance choices to the strength and source of the evidence.
- Make claim, evidence, limitation, and implication visible with genuine logical connectors.
- Use nominalization and passive voice when they serve topic continuity or method focus, not as automatic signals of scholarship.
- Academic MSA is contemporary formal prose: label dialect and literary archaism instead of blending either into the analytical voice.
