لن

لن is the standard formal-MSA particle for denying a future event: لن نؤجلَ الاجتماع means “we will not postpone the meeting.” It stands before an imperfect verb and governs the subjunctive. English will not is an auxiliary phrase; Arabic لن is a particle whose grammatical effect is visible in the ending of the lexical verb itself.

Because refusals and promises often use لن, the particle can sound forceful. That force comes from the utterance and its context, not from an inherent meaning “never for all time.” This distinction is essential both for accurate reading and for avoiding exaggerated translations.

For a verb-by-verb treatment of regular, weak, hamzated, and geminate stems, see future negation with لن. This page concentrates on the particle’s scope and discourse behavior.

Position, spelling, and government

لن is written as a separate word immediately before the imperfect it governs. Coordinators can attach to it—ولن “and will not,” فلن “so will not”—but لن does not attach to the verb. It contributes future negation and changes the imperfect from indicative to subjunctive.

نرسل النسخة النهائية مساء

nursilu n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata masāʾan

We are sending / send the final copy in the evening. (Indicative imperfect.)

لن نرسل النسخة النهائية قبل مراجعتها

lan nursila n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata qabla murājaʿatihā

We will not send the final copy before reviewing it. (Subjunctive after لن.)

The visible contrast is نرسلُ / نرسلَ. At a natural pause, final short vowels may not be heard, but the syntactic government remains. In careful inflected reading, لن requires nursila, never indicative nursilu.

💡
Parse لن before translating: it tells you that the following imperfect is both future-negative and subjunctive. A time phrase tells you how long the denial lasts.

What the subjunctive looks like

A sound singular imperfect changes final ـُ to ـَ. The five verbs—forms with indicative ـانِ، ـونَ، ـينَ—delete mood nūn. Feminine-plural ـنَ stays because it marks agreement. Final-weak singulars generally retain their weak letter in the subjunctive, unlike the deletion found after jussive لم.

IndicativeAfter لنSubjunctive effect
يَكْتُبُلَنْ يَكْتُبَfinal u → a
يَكْتُبُونَلَنْ يَكْتُبُواmood nūn deleted
تَكْتُبِينَلَنْ تَكْتُبِيmood nūn deleted
يَدْعُولَنْ يَدْعُوَfinal wāw retained; fatḥa pronounced
يَرْمِيلَنْ يَرْمِيَfinal yāʾ retained; fatḥa pronounced
يَسْعَىلَنْ يَسْعَىsubjunctive is estimated; spelling and sound coincide
يَكْتُبْنَلَنْ يَكْتُبْنَfeminine-plural nūn retained

الموظفون لن يغادروا المبنى قبل انتهاء الإنذار

al-muwaẓẓafūna lan yughādirū l-mabnā qabla ntihāʾi l-ʾindhār

The employees will not leave the building before the alarm ends. (Mood nūn is deleted.)

لن يدعو الرئيس إلى انتخابات مبكرة

lan yadʿuwa r-raʾīsu ʾilā ntikhābātin mubakkira(h)

The president will not call for early elections. (Final wāw remains in the subjunctive.)

الباحثات لن يهملن هذه النتيجة

al-bāḥithātu lan yuhmilna hādhihi n-natīja(h)

The female researchers will not ignore this result. (Feminine-plural nūn remains.)

The weak-letter contrast is especially revealing: لم يدعُ is jussive and deletes final و, whereas لن يدعوَ is subjunctive and keeps it. The spelling يدعوا belongs to masculine-plural forms with deleted nūn, not to singular يدعوَ.

Future negation without سـ or سوف

Positive future سيكتبُ / سوف يكتبُ normally retains the indicative. Negative future لن يكتبَ replaces that construction; standard formal MSA does not stack لن with سـ or سوف.

ستعلن اللجنة قرارها غدا

sa-tuʿlinu l-lajnatu qarārahā ghadan

The committee will announce its decision tomorrow.

لن تعلن اللجنة قرارها غدا

lan tuʿlina l-lajnatu qarārahā ghadan

The committee will not announce its decision tomorrow.

Here لن negates the future assertion and directly governs تعلنَ. Adding سـ would place two incompatible future-building strategies in the same simple predicate.

Scope: what exactly is denied?

The negative scope includes the following predicate and its complements unless contrast, coordination, or context narrows it. Time adverbials are crucial: they can limit the denial to a single occasion or extend it indefinitely.

لن نناقش الخطة اليوم

lan nunāqisha l-khuṭṭata l-yawm

We will not discuss the plan today. (A later discussion remains possible.)

لن نناقش هذه الخطة أبدا

lan nunāqisha hādhihi l-khuṭṭata ʾabadan

We will never discuss this plan. (أبدا makes the denial unlimited.)

These sentences differ only in the time expression, yet their practical commitments are very different. لن itself does not supply “today” or “ever.”

Contrast can also locate the focus inside the negative clause:

لن نرسل النسخة الورقية، بل سنرسل ملفا إلكترونيا

lan nursila n-nuskhata l-waraqiyyata, bal sa-nursilu milaffan ʾilikturūniyyan

We will not send the paper copy; instead, we will send an electronic file.

The negated choice is the paper copy, not the act of sending in every form.

Clause boundaries end the government relation

لن directly governs the imperfect that follows it. A tightly coordinated verb can share the same negative scope and subjunctive marking. Once the coordination opens a genuinely new clause—after لكنّ، بل، ثمّ or a comparable boundary in their clause-linking uses—that new clause has its own polarity and mood.

لن تتغير السياسة هذا الشهر، لكن الوزارة ستراجع إجراءات التنفيذ

lan tataghayyara s-siyāsatu hādhā sh-shahra, lakinna l-wizārata sa-turājiʿu ʾijrāʾāti t-tanfīdh

The policy will not change this month, but the ministry will review the implementation procedures.

تتغيرَ is subjunctive under لن. The second clause begins with لكنّ, whose noun الوزارةَ is accusative, and contains affirmative future ستراجعُ in the indicative. One short passage therefore shows three independent relations: verbal mood, nominal case, and polarity.

With coordinated verbs, repeat لن when separate negation must be unmistakable:

لن نوقع العقد، ولن نبدأ العمل قبل موافقة المجلس

lan nuwaqqiʿa l-ʿaqda, wa-lan nabdaʾa l-ʿamala qabla muwāfaqati l-majlis

We will not sign the contract, and we will not begin work before the council’s approval.

The attached و joins clauses; it does not make لن part of the verb.

Rhetorical strength without a “permanent negation” rule

In a forecast, لن can be neutral. In a refusal, oath-like promise, or polemical sentence, it can be emphatic (formal). English likewise lets I will not range from a plain prediction to a firm refusal. Do not build the surrounding emotion into the particle’s dictionary meaning.

تشير البيانات الحالية إلى أن التضخم لن ينخفض قبل نهاية الربع

tushīru l-bayānātu l-ḥāliyyatu ʾilā ʾanna t-taḍakhkhuma lan yankhafiḍa qabla nihāyati r-rubʿ

Current data indicate that inflation will not fall before the end of the quarter. (Neutral analytical forecast.)

لن أتخلى عن حقي في الطعن

lan ʾatakhallā ʿan ḥaqqī fī ṭ-ṭaʿn

I will not give up my right to appeal. (Firm formal declaration.)

The second sentence is strong because it is a first-person commitment in a consequential setting. Even there, لن is not a metaphysical claim about eternity.

💡
Translate rhetorical force from the whole sentence. لن marks future negation; أبدا, a time limit, repetition, contrast, and the speech situation determine whether English needs will not, refuses to, or never will.

Common Mistakes

Keeping the indicative ending

❌ لن نعلن النتيجة اليوم

lan nuʿlinu n-natījata l-yawm

Incorrect reading — لن governs subjunctive nuʿlina, not indicative nuʿlinu.

✅ لن نعلن النتيجة اليوم

lan nuʿlina n-natījata l-yawm

We will not announce the result today.

Keeping mood nūn in a five-verb form

❌ لن تكتبين الرسالة وحدك

Incorrect — second-person feminine singular تكتبين loses mood nūn after لن.

✅ لن تكتبي الرسالة وحدك

lan taktubī r-risālata waḥdaki

You will not write the letter alone. (Addressing one woman.)

Treating the subjunctive like the jussive

❌ لن يدع المدير إلى إلغاء الاجتماع

Incorrect for singular يدعو — the subjunctive retains final و: لن يدعوَ.

✅ لن يدعو المدير إلى إلغاء الاجتماع

lan yadʿuwa l-mudīru ʾilā ʾilghāʾi l-ijtimāʿ

The director will not call for canceling the meeting.

Stacking a positive future marker after لن

❌ لن سنؤجل الجلسة

Incorrect — do not combine لن with attached سـ in one simple future predicate.

✅ لن نؤجل الجلسة

lan nuʾajjila l-jalsa(h)

We will not postpone the session.

Assuming that لن alone means “never”

❌ لن أسافر غدا يعني أنني لن أسافر أبدا

Incorrect interpretation — غدا limits the denial to tomorrow.

✅ لن أسافر غدا، لكنني سأسافر يوم الجمعة

lan ʾusāfira ghadan, lakinnanī sa-ʾusāfiru yawma l-jumuʿa(h)

I will not travel tomorrow, but I will travel on Friday.

Key Takeaways

  • لن is separate from its verb and governs a subjunctive imperfect.
  • Sound singulars show final -a; five-verb forms lose mood nūn; feminine-plural nūn remains.
  • Final-weak singulars behave as subjunctives, not as jussives: لن يدعوَ but لم يدعُ.
  • Do not add سـ or سوف after لن in the basic future-negative construction.
  • Context and time expressions create firmness, limits, or “never” readings; لن itself is not inherently permanent negation.
