لن + Subjunctive for Future Negation

Use لن + the subjunctive imperfect for a straightforward future denial: لن يتغير الموعد “the appointment will not change.” لن contributes future-negative meaning and governs the following verb’s mood. It does not itself mean “never,” and it does not automatically claim that the event is impossible forever.

This architecture is standard contemporary MSA (formal). English hides mood in will not + verb; Arabic marks the relationship on the imperfect itself.

The broader ending system is mapped on the subjunctive imperfect.

From future affirmative to future negative

سيرسل القسم النتيجة مساء اليوم.

sa-yursilu l-qismu n-natījata masāʾa l-yawm.

The department will send the result this evening.

لن يرسل القسم النتيجة مساء اليوم.

lan yursila l-qismu n-natījata masāʾa l-yawm.

The department will not send the result this evening.

Positive سيرسلُ is indicative. After لن, sound singular يرسلَ takes audible final -a when connected to its object. Do not add future سـ after لن: the particle already supplies future orientation.

💡
Treat لن يرسلَ as one package: future denial plus subjunctive government. Translating word by word encourages the ungrammatical mixtures لن سيرسل and لن يرسلُ.

feminine pluralيَكْتُبْنَلَنْ يَكْتُبْنَagreement nūn remains

أنت لن تكتبي الرسالة قبل موافقة المشرفة.

ʾanti lan taktubī r-risālata qabla muwāfaqati l-mushrifa(h).

You will not write the letter before the supervisor approves. (One female addressee.)

الباحثان لن ينشرا البيانات قبل التحقق منها.

al-bāḥithāni lan yanshurā l-bayānāti qabla t-taḥaqquqi minhā.

The two researchers will not publish the data before checking it.

الموظفات لن يتركن المكتب قبل انتهاء الاجتماع.

al-muwaẓẓafātu lan yatrukna l-maktaba qabla ntihāʾi l-ijtimāʿ.

The employees will not leave the office before the meeting ends. (All female.)

The feminine-plural nūn remains because it marks the subject, not mood. That distinction is grammatical, not optional spelling.

Weak-final verbs: retention, not jussive deletion

Final-wāw دعا / يدعو, root د-ع-و, and final-yāʾ رمى / يرمي, root ر-م-ي, retain the weak letter and pronounce subjunctive fatḥa on it. Alif-maqṣūra سعى / يسعى, root س-ع-ي, also retains ى, though its ending is estimated.

لن يدعو المركز متحدثا آخر بعد إغلاق البرنامج.

lan yadʿuwa l-markazu mutaḥaddithan ʾākhara baʿda ʾighlāqi l-barnāmaj.

The center will not invite another speaker after the program is finalized.

لن يسعى المجلس إلى حل مؤقت للأزمة.

lan yasʿā l-majlisu ʾilā ḥallin muʾaqqatin li-l-ʾazma(h).

The council will not seek a temporary solution to the crisis.

Contrast jussive لم يدعُ / لم يسعَ, which deletes the weak letter. The spelling itself therefore helps distinguish past لم from future لن.

Scope and contrast with لا

لن usually scopes over the verb phrase. A correction can deny one planned action while preserving another:

لن نلغي المؤتمر، بل سنؤجل الجلسة الافتتاحية.

lan nulghiya l-muʾtamara, bal sa-nuʾajjilu l-jalsata l-iftitāḥiyya(h).

We will not cancel the conference; rather, we will postpone the opening session.

With a future-time adverb, لا + indicative can sometimes express a scheduled, habitual, or emphatically framed future, especially in regulations or promises. لن is the unambiguous default for simple future denial.

لا تفتح المكتبة غدا؛ فهذا يوم عطلة.

lā taftaḥu l-maktabatu ghadan; fa-hādhā yawmu ʿuṭla(h).

The library is not opening tomorrow; it is a holiday. (Schedule-like future context.)

لن تفتح المكتبة غدا بسبب أعمال الصيانة.

lan taftaḥa l-maktabatu ghadan bi-sababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h).

The library will not open tomorrow because of maintenance.

The distinction is not “weak versus strong negation.” It is clause architecture: لا leaves the imperfect indicative and lets context supply future time; لن grammatically packages future denial and triggers the subjunctive.

Negative questions and answer behavior

ألن تحضروا حفل الافتتاح مساء الخميس؟

ʾa-lan taḥḍurū ḥafla l-iftitāḥi masāʾa l-khamīs?

Won't you attend the opening ceremony on Thursday evening? (Addressing a group.)

بلى، سنحضر بعد انتهاء المحاضرة.

balā, sa-naḥḍuru baʿda ntihāʾi l-muḥāḍara(h).

Yes, we will attend after the lecture ends. (Reverses the negation.)

نعم، لن نحضر بسبب السفر.

naʿam, lan naḥḍura bi-sababi s-safar.

That's right, we will not attend because we are traveling. (Confirms the negative.)

Common Mistakes

Using ما + imperfect for future denial

❌ ما يسافر الوفد غدا.

Incorrect in neutral formal MSA—use لن with the subjunctive.

✅ لن يسافر الوفد غدا بسبب إغلاق المطار.

lan yusāfira l-wafdu ghadan bi-sababi ʾighlāqi l-maṭār.

The delegation will not travel tomorrow because the airport is closed.

Using لم without its jussive

❌ لم يرمي العامل المواد أمس.

Incorrect—past لم requires jussive يرم, deleting final ي.

✅ لم يرم العامل المواد قبل فحصها.

lam yarmi l-ʿāmilu l-mawādda qabla faḥṣihā.

The worker did not discard the materials before inspecting them.

Adding future سـ after لن

❌ لن سيغلق المتجر أبوابه مبكرا.

Incorrect—لن already supplies future time and directly precedes the imperfect.

✅ لن يغلق المتجر أبوابه مبكرا هذا المساء.

lan yughliqa l-matjaru ʾabwābahu mubakkiran hādhā l-masāʾ.

The shop will not close early this evening.

Retaining nūn or deleting a weak letter

❌ المديرون لن يدعون إلى اجتماع جديد.

Incorrect for masculine-plural يدعون—لن deletes mood nūn, producing يدعوا.

✅ المديرون لن يدعوا إلى اجتماع جديد قبل التصويت.

al-mudīrūna lan yadʿū ʾilā jtimāʿin jadīdin qabla t-taṣwīt.

The directors will not call for a new meeting before the vote.

Importing English answer logic

❌ ألن تنشروا البيان؟ نعم، سننشره.

Contradictory in careful MSA—نعم confirms that you will not publish it.

✅ ألن تنشروا البيان؟ بلى، سننشره بعد المراجعة.

ʾa-lan tanshurū l-bayān? balā, sa-nanshuruhu baʿda l-murājaʿa(h).

Won't you publish the statement? Yes, we will publish it after review.

Key Takeaways

  • لن + subjunctive imperfect is the unambiguous core architecture for future negation.
  • Sound forms take -a; five-verb forms lose mood nūn; feminine-plural nūn remains.
  • Weak wāw and yāʾ remain in the subjunctive, unlike their deletion after jussive لم.
  • لا can receive future interpretation from context, but it stays indicative and is often schedule-like.
  • بلى reverses a negative question; نعم confirms it.
