لم + Jussive for Past Negation

Use لم + the jussive imperfect to deny that an event happened in the past: لم يصل الرد “the reply did not arrive.” The form after لم is morphologically imperfect but temporally past. This combination is extremely common in formal contemporary MSA (formal), from news reports to ordinary factual narration.

English also builds past negation analytically—did not arrive—but Arabic does not use a bare verb after an auxiliary. لم itself sets past-negative time and requires a fully inflected imperfect in the jussive mood.

For the complete morphology across other jussive governors, see the jussive imperfect.

The core affirmative–negative pair

Compare a positive perfect event with its negative counterpart:

وصل الرد إلى القسم صباحا.

waṣala r-raddu ʾilā l-qismi ṣabāḥā.

The reply reached the department this morning.

لم يصل الرد إلى القسم صباحا.

lam yaṣili r-raddu ʾilā l-qismi ṣabāḥā.

The reply did not reach the department this morning.

The positive uses perfect وصل. The negative does not put that perfect after لم; it switches to imperfect يصل and makes it jussive. Underlying يصلْ receives a support vowel i before the following article in connected pronunciation: يصلِ الرد. That vowel repairs a sound cluster; it is not an indicative ending.

💡
Learn the whole conversion: positive وصل → negative لم يصلْ. The change involves polarity, time architecture, aspectual form, and mood—not merely insertion of a word meaning not.

How the jussive is marked

The visible marker depends on the verb form:

TypeIndicativeAfter لمChange
sound singularيَكْتُبُلَمْ يَكْتُبْfinal sukūn
you f.sg.تَكْتُبِينَلَمْ تَكْتُبِيmood nūn deleted
dualيَكْتُبَانِلَمْ يَكْتُبَاmood nūn deleted
masculine pluralيَكْتُبُونَلَمْ يَكْتُبُواmood nūn deleted
feminine pluralيَكْتُبْنَلَمْ يَكْتُبْنَagreement nūn remains

المراجعتان لم تكتبا ملاحظاتهما في الملف.

al-murājiʿatāni lam taktubā mulāḥaẓātihimā fī l-milaff.

The two reviewers did not write their comments in the file. (Both female.)

المحررون لم يضيفوا عنوانا فرعيا إلى المقال.

al-muḥarrirūna lam yuḍīfū ʿunwānan farʿiyyan ʾilā l-maqāl.

The editors did not add a subheading to the article.

The first deletes dual nūn; the second deletes masculine-plural nūn. The final alif after plural وا is a silent spelling marker. Feminine-plural ـنَ, by contrast, identifies the subject and must remain.

Weak-final verbs make mood visible

With a final-weak singular, the jussive deletes the weak letter. Form I دعا / يدعو “invite, call,” root د-ع-و, becomes يدعُ; رمى / يرمي, root ر-م-ي, becomes يرمِ; سعى / يسعى, root س-ع-ي, becomes يسعَ.

دعا المنظم صحفيين إضافيين إلى المؤتمر.

daʿā l-munaẓẓimu ṣaḥafiyyīna ʾiḍāfiyyīna ʾilā l-muʾtamar.

The organizer invited additional journalists to the conference.

لم يدع المنظم صحفيين إضافيين إلى المؤتمر.

lam yadʿu l-munaẓẓimu ṣaḥafiyyīna ʾiḍāfiyyīna ʾilā l-muʾtamar.

The organizer did not invite additional journalists to the conference.

The u in يدعُ belongs to the stem after written و disappears. It does not make the verb indicative. Mood is licensed by لم, not diagnosed from a final vowel in isolation.

لم يسع الوفد إلى تغيير جدول الزيارة.

lam yasʿa l-wafdu ʾilā taghyīri jadwali z-ziyāra(h).

The delegation did not seek to change the visit schedule.

Here deletion is visible even in unvocalized writing: indicative يسعى contrasts with jussive يسع.

لم and ما + perfect

Both patterns can deny past events, but their internal structures cannot be mixed.

PatternVerbTypical discourse value
ما + perfectunchanged perfect; no mooddirect denial of a completed event
لم + imperfectjussivevery common neutral past negation

قالوا إنني وافقت، لكنني ما وافقت على هذه الصيغة.

qālū ʾinnanī wāfaqtu, lākinnanī mā wāfaqtu ʿalā hādhihi ṣ-ṣīgha(h).

They said I agreed, but I did not agree to this wording. (Direct correction.)

لم أوافق على الصيغة التي أرسلوها أمس.

lam ʾuwāfiq ʿalā ṣ-ṣīghati llatī ʾarsalūhā ʾams.

I did not agree to the wording they sent yesterday.

The semantic boundary is not absolute; either can report a completed denial. What is absolute is the grammar: ما وافقتُ contains a perfect, while لم أوافقْ contains a jussive imperfect.

Scope and “not yet”

Ordinary لم denies the event over a relevant past interval. A contrast can narrow which constituent is rejected:

لم أرسل العقد إلى الشركة، بل أرسلته إلى المحامي.

lam ʾursili l-ʿaqda ʾilā sh-sharikati, bal ʾarsaltuhu ʾilā l-muḥāmī.

I did not send the contract to the company; rather, I sent it to the lawyer.

The sending happened; بل shows that the destination, not the entire event, is corrected. With بعدُ “yet,” لم can describe a past-to-present interval that remains open:

لم يصل القرار بعد، لذلك أبقينا الملف مفتوحا.

lam yaṣili l-qarāru baʿdu, li-dhālika ʾabqaynā l-milaffa maftūḥan.

The decision has not arrived yet, so we kept the file open.

💡
English translation may be simple past or present perfect. Arabic morphology does not change: لم + jussive. Time adverbs and discourse context determine whether “did not” or “has not” sounds better in English.

Negative questions and answers

Question hamza joins لم as ألم and does not change its jussive government.

ألم يرسلوا النسخة الموقعة صباحا؟

ʾa-lam yursilū n-nuskhata l-muwaqqaʿata ṣabāḥā?

Didn't they send the signed copy this morning?

بلى، أرسلوها قبل بدء الاجتماع.

balā, ʾarsalūhā qabla badʾi l-ijtimāʿ.

Yes, they sent it before the meeting began. (Reverses the negation.)

نعم، لم يرسلوها حتى الآن.

naʿam, lam yursilūhā ḥattā l-ʾān.

That's right, they have not sent it yet. (Confirms the negative.)

Common Mistakes

Using ما + imperfect for neutral present negation

❌ ما يراجع المحامي العقد الآن.

Incorrect for neutral present MSA—use لا + indicative imperfect.

✅ لا يراجع المحامي العقد الآن؛ إنه في المحكمة.

lā yurājiʿu l-muḥāmī l-ʿaqda l-ʾāna; ʾinnahu fī l-maḥkama(h).

The lawyer is not reviewing the contract now; he is in court.

Putting a perfect after لم

❌ لم وصل المدير إلى الجلسة.

Incorrect—لم governs an imperfect jussive, not perfect وصل.

✅ لم يصل المدير إلى الجلسة بسبب تأخر الرحلة.

lam yaṣili l-mudīru ʾilā l-jalsati bi-sababi taʾakhkhuri r-riḥla(h).

The director did not reach the session because the flight was delayed.

Reusing لم for future time

❌ لم نغادر غدا.

Incorrect for a future denial—غدا requires a future architecture.

✅ لن نغادر غدا إذا استمرت العاصفة.

lan nughādira ghadan ʾidhā stamarrati l-ʿāṣifa(h).

We will not leave tomorrow if the storm continues.

Retaining a weak letter or mood nūn

❌ لم يدعو الخبيران إلى تمديد المهلة.

Incorrect—before the dual subject, singular jussive يدع deletes final wāw.

✅ لم يدع الخبيران إلى تمديد المهلة مرة أخرى.

lam yadʿu l-khabīrāni ʾilā tamdīdi l-muhlati marratan ʾukhrā.

The two experts did not call for extending the deadline again.

Answering by English yes/no logic

❌ ألم ينجح الاختبار؟ نعم، نجح.

Contradictory in careful MSA—نعم confirms that the test did not succeed.

✅ ألم ينجح الاختبار؟ بلى، نجح في المحاولة الثانية.

ʾa-lam yanjaḥi l-ikhtibār? balā, najaḥa fī l-muḥāwalati th-thāniya(h).

Didn't the test succeed? Yes, it succeeded on the second attempt.

Key Takeaways

  • لم supplies past negation and requires a jussive imperfect.
  • The jussive appears as sukūn, deletion of mood nūn, or deletion of a final weak letter.
  • ما + perfect can also negate the past, but its verb has no mood; never mix the two architectures.
  • Context determines whether English prefers “did not” or “has not.”
  • بلى reverses a negative question; نعم confirms it.
