Weather Expressions

Arabic weather talk uses several complementary frames. الجو + adjective is the easiest everyday MSA pattern: الجو بارد “the weather is cold.” الطقس + adjective is especially common in forecasts and informational prose. Weather events use verbs—تمطر، تهب الرياح، تتساقط الثلوج—without an English-style dummy it. The impersonal-sentence guide explains why Arabic needs no empty subject in these patterns.

Fluency comes from choosing the frame that fits the message. An adjective describes a condition, a verb presents an event, and a forecast expression marks probability. The core forms here are contemporary cross-regional MSA; ordinary local conversation normally uses regional vocabulary and verb shapes (regional).

الجو and الطقس: two high-frequency heads

الجو can mean the weather, surrounding air, or atmosphere. It is natural in personal comments and questions. الطقس specifically denotes weather and is prominent in forecasts, reports, and more informational descriptions (neutral/formal). Both are masculine singular, so their predicate adjective is masculine singular.

Fixed frameProductive substitutionsTypical use
الجو ...حار / بارد / لطيف / رطبpersonal description of conditions
الطقس ...مشمس / غائم / مستقر / عاصفdescription or forecast
كيف الجو؟اليوم / عندكم / في الخارجasking about conditions
توقعات الطقس ...لليوم / للأسبوع / للمنطقةforecast language

كيف الجو عندكم اليوم؟ — الجو بارد لكنه مشمس.

kayfa l-jawwu ʿindakumu l-yawm? — al-jawwu bāridun lakinnahu mushmis.

What's the weather like where you are today? — It is cold but sunny. (Addressed to a group.)

سيبقى الطقس مستقرا حتى مساء الجمعة.

sa-yabqā ṭ-ṭaqsu mustaqirran ḥattā masāʾi l-jumuʿa(h).

The weather will remain stable until Friday evening. (Forecast.)

The phrase الجو لطيف literally calls the weather “pleasant/gentle”; natural English may say “It's nice out.” This is a useful nonliteral equivalence: Arabic names الجو, while English often uses dummy it.

الجو لطيف هذا الصباح، فلنتناول القهوة في الخارج.

al-jawwu laṭīfun hādhā ṣ-ṣabāḥ, fa-l-natanāwali l-qahwata fī l-khārij.

It is nice out this morning, so let's have coffee outside.

💡
Use الجو for a conversational condition and الطقس when weather itself is the informational topic. Do not replace either automatically with المناخ, which means climate over a longer period.

Weather events do not need dummy “it”

English it in “it is raining” refers to nothing. Arabic therefore does not translate it as هو or هي. Impersonal تمطر can stand with place, time, and manner expressions. For named weather nouns, use an ordinary verb and subject: تهب الرياح “the winds blow,” تتساقط الثلوج “snow falls.”

تمطر بغزارة منذ الفجر، فاحمل مظلة.

tumṭiru bi-ghazāratin mundhu l-fajr, fa-ḥmil miẓalla(h).

It has been raining heavily since dawn, so take an umbrella. (Addressed to one man.)

تهب رياح قوية على الساحل مساء.

tahubbu riyāḥun qawiyyatun ʿalā s-sāḥili masāʾ.

Strong winds are blowing along the coast this evening.

تتساقط الثلوج في الجبال، بينما تهطل الأمطار في المدينة.

tatasāqaṭu th-thulūju fī l-jibāl, baynamā tahṭilu l-ʾamṭāru fī l-madīna(h).

Snow is falling in the mountains, while rain is falling in the city.

The verbs are not freely interchangeable with every noun. تهب collocates with الرياح; تهطل with الأمطار; تتساقط with الثلوج and can also describe rain in suitable contexts. Learn the noun–verb pairing, not only the English verb fall.

Agreement with weather nouns

Singular heads take singular adjectives: درجة الحرارة مرتفعة “the temperature is high.” Non-human plural nouns normally trigger feminine-singular agreement in MSA: درجات الحرارة مرتفعة, الرياح قوية, الغيوم كثيفة. The adjective does not become feminine plural merely because English says temperatures are.

درجات الحرارة مرتفعة، والرطوبة شديدة قرب البحر.

darajātu l-ḥarārati murtafiʿatun, wa-r-ruṭūbatu shadīdatun qurba l-baḥr.

Temperatures are high, and humidity is severe near the sea.

الغيوم كثيفة فوق المناطق الشمالية.

al-ghuyūmu kathīfatun fawqa l-manāṭiqi sh-shamāliyya(h).

Cloud cover is dense over the northern areas. (Forecast style.)

The plural أجواء also takes feminine-singular agreement when it means conditions or atmosphere: أجواء دافئة. In news style it may describe weather across an area, while in other contexts it can mean a social atmosphere.

تسود أجواء دافئة نهارا وباردة ليلا.

tasūdu ʾajwāʾun dāfiʾatun nahāran wa-bāridatun laylan.

Warm conditions prevail by day and cold conditions at night. (Formal/news.)

💡
For a non-human plural, test feminine singular first: رياح قوية، أمطار غزيرة، درجات مرتفعة. This is grammatical agreement, not a claim that the noun is singular in meaning.

Seasons and recurring weather

Use في + season: في الصيف، في الشتاء، في الربيع، في الخريف. A simple nominal sentence describes a present condition; يكون is useful when it adds a habitual or seasonal reading, not as an empty copy of English is.

يكون الصيف حارا وجافا في الداخل، ومعتدلا على الساحل.

yakūnu ṣ-ṣayfu ḥārran wa-jāffan fī d-dākhil, wa-muʿtadilan ʿalā s-sāḥil.

Summer tends to be hot and dry inland, and mild on the coast.

في الربيع تكثر العواصف الرملية في بعض المناطق.

fī r-rabīʿi takthuru l-ʿawāṣifu r-ramliyyatu fī baʿḍi l-manāṭiq.

In spring, sandstorms become frequent in some areas.

Avoid universal cultural assumptions. The timing and character of seasons differ across the Arabic-speaking world; the grammar is shared, but a weather example about snow or monsoon rain must fit its stated location.

Forecasts: probability rather than certainty

Forecasts commonly use من المتوقع أن... “it is expected that...,” من المحتمل أن... “it is likely that...,” and هناك احتمال لـ... “there is a possibility of....” A following أن-clause carries a verb; احتمال can instead govern a verbal noun through لـ.

من المتوقع أن تنخفض درجات الحرارة ليلا.

mina l-mutawaqqaʿi ʾan tankhafiḍa darajātu l-ḥarārati laylan.

Temperatures are expected to fall at night. (Forecast/news.)

هناك احتمال لهطول أمطار خفيفة بعد الظهر.

hunāka ḥtimālun li-huṭūli ʾamṭārin khafīfatin baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.

There is a chance of light rain in the afternoon.

The collocations توقعات الطقس “weather forecast” and حالة الطقس “weather conditions” share the head الطقس but package different relations: the first predicts it; the second describes its state.

تشير توقعات الطقس إلى رياح نشطة وانخفاض في الرؤية.

tushīru tawaqquʿātu ṭ-ṭaqsi ʾilā riyāḥin nashiṭatin wa-nkhifāḍin fī r-ruʾya(h).

The weather forecast indicates brisk winds and reduced visibility. (Formal/news.)

A practical exchange

هل نحتاج إلى معاطف؟ — نعم، الجو بارد في المساء، وقد تمطر بعد السادسة. — إذن سأحمل مظلة أيضا.

hal naḥtāju ʾilā maʿāṭif? — naʿam, al-jawwu bāridun fī l-masāʾ, wa-qad tumṭiru baʿda s-sādisa(h). — ʾidhan sa-ʾaḥmilu miẓallatan ʾayḍan.

Do we need coats? — Yes, it is cold in the evening, and it may rain after six. — Then I'll take an umbrella too.

The reply moves from a state (الجو بارد) to a possible event (قد تمطر). This is more productive than memorizing a separate phrase for every forecast.

Regional and formal variants

Egyptian الدنيا بتمطر and Levantine الدني عم تشتي are normal regional weather expressions (regional: Egypt / Levant), but they are not formal MSA. Use تمطر or تهطل الأمطار in a cross-regional report. Conversely, تشهد البلاد هطول أمطار غزيرة is characteristic formal news style (formal/news) and sounds unnecessarily bureaucratic in a casual exchange.

Common Mistakes

Translating dummy “it” as هو

❌ هو يمطر في الخارج.

Incorrect—هو requires a real masculine referent; weather ‘it’ is not translated.

✅ تمطر خارج المدينة منذ ساعة.

tumṭiru khārija l-madīnati mundhu sāʿa(h).

It has been raining outside the city for an hour.

Using climate for today's weather

❌ المناخ ممطر اليوم، فخذ مظلتك.

Wrong lexical choice for a current condition—المناخ describes longer-term climate, not today's weather.

✅ الطقس ممطر اليوم، فخذ مظلتك.

aṭ-ṭaqsu mumṭirun al-yawm, fa-khudh miẓallatak.

The weather is rainy today, so take your umbrella. (Addressed to one man.)

Making an impersonal weather verb transitive

❌ تمطر السماء المطر بغزارة.

Incorrect object pattern—تمطر does not take المطر as a direct object in the impersonal rain frame.

✅ تهطل الأمطار بغزارة فوق المرتفعات.

tahṭilu l-ʾamṭāru bi-ghazāratin fawqa l-murtafaʿāt.

Rain is falling heavily over the highlands.

Giving a non-human plural full plural agreement

❌ الرياح قويون قرب الساحل.

Incorrect—رياح is a non-human plural and takes feminine-singular قوية, not masculine-human plural قويون.

✅ الرياح قوية قرب الساحل هذا المساء.

ar-riyāḥu qawiyyatun qurba s-sāḥili hādhā l-masāʾ.

The winds are strong near the coast this evening.

Mixing a regional progressive into MSA

❌ الدنيا بتمطر دلوقتي.

Unlabeled Egyptian Arabic—not the neutral MSA frame taught here.

✅ تمطر الآن في وسط المدينة.

tumṭiru l-ʾāna fī wasaṭi l-madīna(h).

It is raining now in the city center. (Formal MSA.)

Key Takeaways

  • Use الجو + adjective for ordinary conditions and الطقس for explicitly weather-focused or forecast language.
  • Weather تمطر takes no dummy هو; named events use collocations such as تهب الرياح and تهطل الأمطار.
  • Non-human plural weather nouns take feminine-singular agreement.
  • Use في + season for seasonal frames and يكون only when it contributes a habitual reading.
  • Distinguish current الطقس from long-term المناخ, and label regional or news-register alternatives.
