Time and Date Expressions

Time expressions become fluent when they are learned as frames: الساعة + feminine hour, في الساعة + time, يوم + weekday, and في + masculine ordinal day + من + month. Scheduling adds a second set of frames around موعد “appointment/set time,” من... إلى... “from... to...,” and verbs such as يبدأ، ينتهي، يستغرق.

English hides some of the grammar behind digits and the preposition at. Arabic distinguishes the feminine hour from the masculine calendar day and does not use one preposition for every time expression. The forms below are neutral contemporary MSA; spontaneous local speech normally uses regional number forms and time formulas (regional).

Asking for and stating clock time

Ask كم الساعة؟ or ما الوقت؟ “What time is it?” In a clock answer, الساعة is followed by a feminine hour label. One o'clock uses conventional الواحدة; later hours use feminine ordinals: الثانية، الثالثة، الرابعة.

Fixed frameVariable slotExample meaning
الساعة ...الواحدة / الثانية / الحادية عشرةIt is one / two / eleven.
في الساعة ...الثالثة / السادسة والنصفat three / at half past six
من الساعة ... إلى الساعة ...التاسعة / الخامسةfrom nine to five
الساعة ... صباحا/مساءالسابعة / الثامنةseven a.m. / eight p.m.

كم الساعة الآن؟ — الساعة الرابعة والربع.

kami s-sāʿatu l-ʾān? — as-sāʿatu r-rābiʿatu wa-r-rubʿ.

What time is it now? — It is a quarter past four.

يفتح مركز الخدمة في الساعة الثامنة صباحا.

yaftaḥu markazu l-khidmati fī s-sāʿati th-thāminati ṣabāḥan.

The service center opens at eight in the morning.

والنصف adds half an hour; والربع adds a quarter; إلا الربع counts a quarter back from the named hour. The named hour therefore changes between “quarter past four” and “quarter to five.”

يصل القطار في الخامسة إلا الربع مساء.

yaṣilu l-qiṭāru fī l-khāmisati ʾillā r-rubʿa masāʾ.

The train arrives at a quarter to five in the evening.

💡
The hour is not a cardinal counted noun. Think “the second hour, the third hour”: الساعة الثانية، الساعة الثالثة. Minutes and durations follow separate cardinal-number rules.

Weekdays and calendar dates

For a weekday, يوم الاثنين “on Monday” can function directly as a time expression. في يوم الاثنين is also grammatical when the day is framed more explicitly. Do not transfer English on as على. For a written-out date, use masculine ordinal agreement with understood يوم: في الخامس من يونيو “on the fifth of June.”

موعد المقابلة يوم الأربعاء في الساعة العاشرة.

mawʿidu l-muqābalati yawma l-ʾarbiʿāʾi fī s-sāʿati l-ʿāshira(h).

The interview is on Wednesday at ten o'clock.

يبدأ المعرض في الثالث من نوفمبر وينتهي في السابع منه.

yabdaʾu l-maʿriḍu fī th-thālithi min nūfambar wa-yantahī fī s-sābiʿi minh.

The exhibition begins on the third of November and ends on the seventh.

The date ordinal is masculine because omitted يوم is masculine, whereas the clock ordinal is feminine because ساعة is feminine. Compare الثالث من نوفمبر “the third of November” with الساعة الثالثة “three o'clock.”

ستعقد الندوة يوم الخامس عشر من فبراير عام ألفين وسبعة وعشرين.

sa-tuʿqadu n-nadwatu yawma l-khāmisa ʿashara min fibrāyira ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-sabʿatin wa-ʿishrīn.

The seminar will be held on 15 February 2027. (Formal announcement.)

Digits are common in timetables and forms: 15/2/2027 or ١٥/٢/٢٠٢٧. Month names are safer than slashes in international communication because readers may expect different numeric orders. For the full number grammar, see Dates, Years, and Centuries.

Making an appointment: موعد as a collocational center

The noun موعد means an appointed time and, by extension, an appointment. It does not simply equal every English use of time. Learn its verbs as collocations:

  • حدد موعدا “set a date/time”;
  • أكد الموعد “confirm the appointment”;
  • غير الموعد “change the appointment”;
  • أجل الموعد “postpone the appointment.”

These expressions share one head noun but select different information. حددنا موعد الاجتماع chooses it; أكدنا الموعد verifies an existing arrangement.

حددنا موعد الفحص يوم الخميس بعد الظهر.

ḥaddadnā mawʿida l-faḥṣi yawma l-khamīsi baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.

We scheduled the examination for Thursday afternoon.

هل يمكنك تأكيد الموعد قبل نهاية الدوام؟

hal yumkinuka taʾkīdu l-mawʿidi qabla nihāyati d-dawām?

Can you confirm the appointment before the end of the workday? (Addressed to one man.)

For proposing a time, هل يناسبك...؟ is literally “Does ... suit you?” but naturally means “Does ... work for you?” The proposed time is the subject; the person is encoded by the attached object suffix on يناسب.

هل يناسبك يوم الأحد في الحادية عشرة؟ — نعم، هذا الموعد مناسب.

hal yunāsibuki yawmu l-ʾaḥadi fī l-ḥādiyata ʿashra(h)? — naʿam, hādhā l-mawʿidu munāsib.

Would Sunday at eleven work for you? — Yes, that time works. (Addressed to one woman.)

💡
English time splits into Arabic choices: الوقت is time as a general resource or clock concept; موعد is an arranged time or appointment; مرة counts an occurrence.

Start, finish, duration, and range

Use يبدأ + event + time for the start and ينتهي + event + time for the end. Use يستغرق + event + duration for elapsed duration. A duration is not introduced by في merely because English says “in two hours.”

يبدأ الدرس في التاسعة وينتهي في العاشرة والنصف.

yabdaʾu d-darsu fī t-tāsiʿati wa-yantahī fī l-ʿāshiratin wa-n-niṣf.

The lesson starts at nine and ends at half past ten.

يستغرق الاجتماع ساعة ونصفا، من الثانية إلى الثالثة والنصف.

yastaghriqu l-ijtimāʿu sāʿatan wa-niṣfan, mina th-thāniyati ʾilā th-thālithati wa-n-niṣf.

The meeting lasts an hour and a half, from two to three thirty.

The pair من... إلى... marks a range and repeats the relevant frame when clarity requires it: من يوم الاثنين إلى يوم الخميس or من الساعة التاسعة إلى الساعة الثانية. Shorter من التاسعة إلى الثانية is natural once clock time is established.

Dialogue and announcement patterns

أرغب في تغيير موعدي. — بالطبع، هل يناسبك صباح الثلاثاء؟ — أفضل المساء إن أمكن. — لدينا موعد متاح في السادسة.

ʾarghabu fī taghyīri mawʿidī. — bi-ṭ-ṭabʿ, hal yunāsibuka ṣabāḥu th-thulāthāʾi? — ʾufaḍḍilu l-masāʾa ʾin ʾamkan. — ladaynā mawʿidun mutāḥun fī s-sādisa(h).

I'd like to change my appointment. — Of course. Would Tuesday morning suit you? — I prefer the evening if possible. — We have an opening at six. (Addressed to one man.)

أعلنت الجامعة أن التسجيل سيغلق عند منتصف الليل يوم الثلاثين من سبتمبر.

ʾaʿlanati l-jāmiʿatu ʾanna t-tasjīla sa-yughlaqu ʿinda muntaṣafi l-layli yawma th-thalāthīna min sibtambar.

The university announced that registration will close at midnight on 30 September. (Formal/news.)

بتاريخ “dated/on the date of” is common in official notices and file references (formal/bureaucratic): صدر القرار بتاريخ.... It is grammatical but heavier than a simple يوم or في in an ordinary appointment conversation.

Regional time forms

Egyptian الساعة كام؟ and Levantine قديش الساعة؟ are ordinary regional questions (regional: Egypt / Levant), not neutral written MSA. Forms such as على الساعة خمسة also occur regionally (regional). In cross-regional formal Arabic, use كم الساعة؟ and في الساعة الخامسة. Labeling a regional form is better than pretending it is an error; mixing it unpredictably into an MSA schedule is the real problem.

Common Mistakes

Using a masculine number for the hour

❌ يبدأ العرض في الساعة الثالث.

Incorrect—the ordinal agrees with feminine الساعة.

✅ يبدأ العرض في الساعة الثالثة مساء.

yabdaʾu l-ʿarḍu fī s-sāʿati th-thālithati masāʾ.

The presentation begins at three in the afternoon.

Copying English on before a weekday

❌ سنتصل بك على يوم الجمعة.

Incorrect English-preposition transfer—formal MSA uses يوم الجمعة or في يوم الجمعة.

✅ سنتصل بك يوم الجمعة لتأكيد التفاصيل.

sa-nattaṣilu bika yawma l-jumuʿati li-taʾkīdi t-tafāṣīl.

We will call you on Friday to confirm the details. (Addressed to one man.)

Treating موعد and وقت as free synonyms

❌ غيرت وقت الطبيب إلى الاثنين.

Wrong collocation for the intended appointment—the doctor's general ‘time’ was not changed; the appointment was.

✅ غيرت موعدي مع الطبيب إلى يوم الاثنين.

ghayyartu mawʿidī maʿa ṭ-ṭabībi ʾilā yawmi l-ithnayn.

I moved my appointment with the doctor to Monday.

Adding a preposition after يناسب

❌ هل يناسب معك الموعد الجديد؟

Incorrect object pattern—يناسب takes the person directly through an attached suffix.

✅ هل يناسبكم الموعد الجديد بعد الظهر؟

hal yunāsibukumu l-mawʿidu l-jadīdu baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr?

Does the new afternoon appointment work for you? (Addressed to a group.)

Key Takeaways

  • The hour takes a feminine label; the day of the month takes a masculine ordinal with understood يوم.
  • Use في الساعة for precise clock time, يوم or في يوم for weekdays, and في... من... for expanded dates.
  • Learn موعد with verbs such as حدد، أكد، غير، أجل rather than substituting وقت mechanically.
  • هل يناسبك...؟ is a productive, nonliteral way to ask whether a proposed time works.
  • Mark ranges with من... إلى..., durations with يستغرق, and regional time formulas with an explicit label.
